I created a LiveUSB and that worked. On about the 3rd use I attempted to update packages - about 174 came up I think (I saw that number on another post which reminded me, hence the precision). Two or three dialogues came up, unfortunately unintelligible to me, a Ubuntu novice. Both concerned grub2. The first I just forwarded on and the update trundled on. The 2nd asked me something like whether I wanted grub to update sda or sdb. I checked neither (against the pop-up help advice). The update completed but when I eventually went to reboot from the USB I got a repeating fatal message: something like "Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.31-17-generic/.dep". I had to switch off. It did reboot successfully from a LiveCD.

I'm running 9.04 and trying to use the update manager. On checking for updates, I get the error message:W: Failed to fetch http://mirror.uoregon.edu/ubuntu/arc...ty/Release.gpg Could not connect to 69.219.142.196:21 (69.219.142.196). - connect (111 Connection refused)W: Failed to fetch http://mirror.uoregon.edu/ubuntu/arc...tion-en_US.bz2 Could not connect to 69.219.142.196:21 (69.219.142.196). - connect (111 Connection refused)(more...)This used to work, but now it doesn't. I tried selecting all kinds of different sources in the "Software Sources" GUI. And this seemed to change my /etc/sources.list accordingly. But, whatever the hostname given (above mirror.uoregon...), that same IP address is shown 69.219.... huh? I can browse the web, etc fine from this computer

I wanted to try out the new Ubuntu 10.04, but since I don't have any CD's available I thought I could use my 9.10 CD and upgrade from it.
1. Installed 9.10 on the entire disk.
2. Went to update manager(?) and clicked the button to upgrade to 10.04
3. It successfully downloaded all the files.
4. When installing the new files it suddenly said that it failed to update, and it stopped. Then I went to do a hardware test, but none of the menus were working.
I had to do a manual shutdown, and reboot the computer. This time I was met with an error "Unable to mount root fs".
I figured the upgrade was the problem, so I reinstalled 9.10 to try without upgrading.
1. Reinstalled 9.10 on the entire disk.
2. Went to update manager(?) and started the normal update for 9.10 so the system would be up-to-date.
3. Same thing happened now, it fails to update and it makes my computer useless.
I've already checked my hardware for errors, can't find any. I've checked the CD for errors, can't find any. I had 9.04 on the same computer a few weeks ago, and it was rock-solid. Worked like a dream. I'm using Win7 now though.

I am having trouble upgrading and updating. When updating the file downloads to 99% and then stops. The error message is:
[Code]...
I believe this has something to do with a power outage while upgrading a few days ago. Most of the install completed after rebooting, all except the three 'linux kernel image' files and a few others. Also, as a side issue, Flash plugin and Flex builder are no longer working. This may be unrelated. Does any one have any trouble shooting advice for the issue?

yesterday I performed an automatic security update suggested by the update manager on my virtualized (with VirtualBox on a Windows 7 host) Ubuntu 10.10 installation.
The update somehow failed and left me with an unbootable system. When I try to boot, I am told that various folders, files, and what not are missing. Then the system drops into a busybox and leaves me with an (initramfs) prompt.
This happens with all kernels I get offered by GRUB, although the error messages are quite different from kernel to kernel.
Well, the short of it is this: I don't have the slightest idea on how to get back to a working system and this site is the final straw I'm willing to grab. A complete disaster like this following an update initiated and executed by the system is unheard of in Windows-land; at least I haven't heard of it, yet, and therefore I am going to abandon Ubuntu and Linux altogeteher, if there is no remedy.

After a powerdown during my upgrade of Ubuntu 9.10 to Ubuntu 10.04 that rendered my operating system useless I can get to my /home folder. The /home folder is locked and can not be copied or read. This means I can't reinstall my stuff and keep my files. The rest of my data (except for the /root folder) seams to be unlocked. How can I get to my /home folder? Does anyone know how to unlock it?

I have done a update from Lenny to Squeeze with the update manager within Gnome. And there was a error 126 and the update broke off leaving me with a non working system. The system does start into Debian Squeeze to the command line. Users are in place and a login is possible. X does not work and there a lot of broken and defect packages. I want to repair my system. Is a restore without losing the configuration possible?

im a long time Ubuntu user that is giving Fedora a spin using Virtualbox on my Win7 machine. I have managed to get it up and running and guest additions working but have run into a problem with a few of the updates available in the Software Updates section.
It originally had around 75+ updates to install and seemed to do this fine. Unfortunately after a reboot and new check it comes up with 11 new updates. When I run install updates it gives me an error (see this post title) along with this bit of gibberish:
Code:
PackageKit = 0.4.6-8.fc11 is needed by package PackageKit-glib-0.4.6-8.fc11.i586
sane-backends = 1.0.19-15.fc11 is needed by package sane-backends-libs-1.0.19-15.fc11.i586
perl = 4:5.10.0-68.fc11 is needed by package 1:perl-Pod-Escapes-1.04-68.fc11.i586
gnome-media = 2.26.0-6.fc11 is needed by package gnome-media-libs-2.26.0-6.fc11.i586 : Success - empty transaction I have searched around on google and came across similar issues for folks but in most cases they were trying to do a system update that caused the issue. I am not (this is a fresh install tonight of 11). Most other cases also didnt seem to have quite so many items listed.

I am from India, and I tried to update my Ubuntu system today. Code: $sudo apt-get update The update failed because the connection to the India mirror timed out: Code: [URL] Could not connect to in.archive.ubuntu.com:80 (111.91.91.37). - connect (110: Connection timed out) I tried the update a few times, with the same result every time.
I had firestarter running at this time, and noticed that I would get new security events every time I tried an update. I checked the events list, and it turned out that the machine at the ip address 111.91.91.37 (the in.archive.ubuntu.com machine, to go by the above error message) had been trying to make connections to seemingly random ports on the machine every time I tried the update: see the attached screenshot. I then changed my repositories to the Main Server using Synaptic, and tried the update again (from the command-line). This time it worked without a hitch, and firestarter did not report any unwanted incoming connection. why is the India mirror trying to open connections that the Main server apparently does not need in order for me to do the update? Should I (we) be concerned?

I have configured the remote installation of Fedora 13 with kickstart with nfs installation method. All work ok until I boot the Fedora 13 client system.
Fed13 client system receives the IP address from dhcp, receives the loader, loads vmlinuz and initrd.img from tftp, load anaconda, configures the network and dev eth0, mounts nfs server to load kickstart file, loads kickstart file (language...) but when it tries to mount nfs server to install from Fedora 13 installation tree it fails.
First, I thought that I had an error on my NFS configuration but I was wrong. I opened tty with ALT+F4 on the Fedora 13 client and I sew this error:
Code:
Is this a bug or can I modify anything to correct this error? How?
