Ubuntu :: Unwanted Automatic Shut-down, Lucid?

Jun 13, 2010

Lucid was working okay for a few weeks. I believe this issue came up anew in the past few days after a recent system update. The (desktop) system when idle for x amount of time (likely > 1 hour) just shuts down while I am off doing something else. That is bad when downloading a large file that has to be started from scratch again (826 Mb of an 875 Mb file).

I have had to revert back to Hardy (kept in a separate partition) in order to get these wanted downloads. But I do a lot of downloading of film files, so this will be an ongoing issue until I can somehow correct it. I went through the screen-saver options/power management settings, found nothing unusual there, though I am not real certain of all the terminology there.

When I log in using pam_usb, my session dies abruptly if I unplug the usb drive.I am _not_ runing pamusb-agent.It seems like there may be some issue with policykit, but I'm not sure./var/log/auth.log:

Ubuntu Networking :: Unwanted Automatic Wireless Connection?

Jan 4, 2010

I'm new to Ubuntu so bear with me. I installed 9.10 from a CD and it looks fine and works OK wired. However, my wireless keeps picking up a connection at home via my Linksys router that is not mine and I can't get around it, blacklist it or delete it. No matter what I do it keeps showing back up as an AutoConnection. It is the same type of router as mine but the security is different (I use WPA-Personal and the offender is WEP). How can I permanently blockdisableetc the extra connection? I can't get on my home network until the bad autoconnection is gone. More info: I use an IBM R40 into which I installed a Toshiba mini-PC wireless card. I know it works as I have used it to connect to other wireless networks other than my own. I prefer to leave my router configured as it is due to other users at home and the configs I use for them. I read about WICD if that is a possibility, but actually connecting wirelessly is not the issue.

Ubuntu :: Unwanted Automatic Media Player Launching?

Jan 16, 2011

still facing some challenges getting full control of my computer. One problem I can't figure out alone it seems, is that when I open a "place" via Places, Ubuntu immediately launches the first media file it finds in that place, instead of opening the folder. If there are no media files, it often just launches... nothing. The media player pops up empty, and the folder still does not get opened. I can't get into my folders via Places because of this.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Lucid Unwanted Indicator Applet Shortcut In XRDP

May 3, 2010

I have just upgraded my old work horse from 9.10 to 10.04 and on the surface everything looks ok. However there are a few annoying issues that I have not been able to resolved. One of these is an annoying auto shortcut that links the 'm' key to the Indicator applet while running my desktop inside an XRDP session (Windows Vista client). Everytime the m key is pressed, the focus is autotragically hijacked by the Indicator applet. Attempting to type any text from any application such as the terminal or text editor is excruciating since everytime the m key is pressed the focus jumped to the Indicator applet, the only way to disable this 'feature' is by removing the Indicator applet.

This problem is not seen in the native console, only in XRDP sessions.

There is another thread that deals with similar issue [URL] but only for users with Apple keyboards and does not apply to my situation.

I use XRDP alot so this affects me severely. How do I go about diagnosing this problem, xev doesn't even see any event when the m key is pressed, the focus just jumped to the Indicator applet?

Fedora X86/64bit :: Running F11 I586 On Laptop / System Shut Off (not A Normal OS Shut Down, But A Sudden Power Off Without Warning)?

Oct 13, 2009

Offlate I installed F11 i586 on my laptop. F11 shares the hard disk with Vista Home Premium 32-bit. The problem is that when running F11 (or even Ubuntu), my system shut off suddenly(not a normal OS shut down, but a sudden power off without any warning). This could have been a hardware trouble(heating) but it doesn't happen with Vista.
Machine specifications:
Maker: Toshiba
Model: Satellite L305D-S5881
AMD Turion X2 Dual Core Mobile Processor RM-70
3072 MB 800 MHz SDRAM
I don't want to open up my machine unnecessarily, if it isn't a hardware issue.
I am not sure how to verify the bit length of the machine and the OS and does it create a compatibility issue ?
Your advise would be highly appreciated.

Ubuntu :: Unwanted Key Ring Protection On Network Pass?

Dec 14, 2010

Because of a hard disk failure I had to buy a new disk and reinstall Ubuntu 10.04. Prior to the install I was running the live cd version of 10.04. When I connected to my wireless network and entered the password the key manager wanted me to enter a password to protect the network password. Now every time I boot up the system the network will not automatically connect. (It used to do this). Now I have to click on the network manager and select my network. When I do this I get the key manager asking for a password.

So how do I stop the key manager nonsense and get the network to connect automatically as it once did.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Upgrade Adds Unwanted Keyboard Shortcuts

Apr 30, 2010

I just upgraded to 10.04, all went well, except now the "s" and "m" keys on my keyboard open the login menu and the "Me" menu (with the mail and chat options) respectively. Obviously this is very irritating, I can only type those letters by holding down alt. I can't think of how this happened, it didn't do it before the upgrade. I'm using an Apple aluminum keyboard with a Dell. When I run xev and type the s or m key, I get this:

[Code]....

There are no relevant shortcuts under keyboard shortcuts. I am using a xmodmap file that looks like this:

clear mod1
clear mod4

keycode 134 = Alt_R
keycode 64 = Meta_L
keycode 108 = Meta_R
