So I downloaded a movie from megaupload and a pop up came up with [URL]....that bounced me to[URL]..but that webpage did not display. Normally, on Windows, I would have an anti-virus that would likely give me some sense of good or bad websites. On Ubuntu, I am not quite sure. Do I need a malware scanner for the firefox browser? I have the standard package from the 10.04 distro with the latest updates...

Most Ubuntu based distros (Mint, Gosalia, Ubuntu, Xubuntu) are shipped with FF 3.5.8, are there any reported problems with this version of FF? Mint does offer Opera, I really don't care about installing Wine to gain access to IE6, you open the browser, there are two critical updates that shows, but on three occasions, I left the desktop for an hour, and the two updates still never applied. I have installed Clam AV, is there a malware scanner for Mint, too? I do want to be secure, but don't wish to run two AV's, have four separate malware scanners, and scan every piece of everything the way you must do in Windows. With Windows, you spend more time scanning than browsing. I don't want to have to do this with Mint, too.

I can manually ping Stanford ok,
Add/remove software within fed. works ok.
I can type in 192.168.0.1 & get the page for my router
The only thing I did between working & not working was to install
Nvidia Cuda driver for my GTX275
My guess is something in the firewall got tweaked. but I've compared it to 2 working boxes & nothing jumps out at me.
Can a virus survive a reformat, running bootrec /fixmbr (both from the install CD), and then installing Ubuntu? Reformat meaning from the windows disk recovery console, using the format command for all partitions. Likewise, would a virus be capable of surviving just the first two steps alone without installing Ubuntu, just re-installing windows?
If one were to have an MBR virus on Windows or Linux, how abouts would you find or remove it without doing an entire disk wipe? And before someone goes "Linux is immune" take into consideration vulnerabilities on the user end.

I think the measures recommended might be Windows oriented.
I was thinking of physically removing the hard drive and use the computer only with a liveCD for security. But is disabling the hard drive in the cmos just as secure, or does software exist that can still access the hard drive?

I was able to get the printer up and running by downloading the printer driver for debian linux (3.1) from the Canon site without any problems.
Unfortunately I am not having the same luck with the scanner.
I tried downloading ScanGear MP for Linux (deb) (1.3) from the same Canon site but have not yet been able to get the XSane Image Scanner to recognize this scanner driver for my Canon.

View 4 Replies View Relatedi just updated from karmic 9.10 to lucid 10.04 using the online upgrade option. so far everything is working great. the only issues i am having seem to involve firefox. when i visit videos i get the message "your browser is no longer supported. please upgrade to a modern browser." i am running 3.6 "canonical" so it is "modern". i am able to watch videos after i close the message. it's just an annoyance to get this message every time i view a video.
next, is on some websites (like this one) it will not supply my login info. but on a few sites (like ebay) it does supply my login info. not sure why some sites work while others don't. the info is there when i look under my saved passwords....
I can view a php page only with links browser (a text browser) But when i use firefox i got an error "Content encoding error"

My question is which of these still CURRENTLY support detection of WINDOWS viruses in addition to linux viruses. I was able to get my Epson Stylus NX510 printer up and running (after much issue), but I can't get the scanner working. I'm on a laptop, and the printer/scanner is wifi enabled and broadcasts with its own IP address. I can print with no problem, but xsane and simple scan don't recognize the scanner. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI was using Freespire but the version of Firefox was old and I read that Freespire was an old and obsolete OS, so I installed Ubuntu 10.4. I like everything about it so far but Firefox browser is very slow. It can take up to 30 seconds sometimes to load a web page. Just surfing the web is difficult. I do have high speed internet service and a router, I have an XP and a Vista system both are fine and even this system when it had Freespire was fine. It just started when I installed Ubuntu.

Tried that and it didn't help either. When clicking on link icons on my desktop, they open up in Chrome. Chrome says something to the extent "chrome is not your default browser to open links with. Do you want to make it?" I selected No and checked the box to not show it again. (That's why the above is not exactly what it said.) Kind of funny it said that yet it still opened up with Chrome and not Firefox.
