My notebook has no indicators for HDD activity. I want to convert the Scroll Lock LED on my external USB keyboard to an indicator for HDD activity. I know a bunch of such programs for Windows but found nothing for Ubuntu. Is there a way to do this?
View 9 Repliesi've just installed openSUSE 11.3 on my dell studio xps 1640. but i have problem with my WLAN . it's a WLAN 1640 mini-card and i think there is no problem with driver. because it seems that it's installed correctly but i can't see any wireless networks (it says "Device is not ready"). is there any suggestions?by the way, when i turn my wireless to on (it's a touch key not a switch) only my bluetooth indicator is enabled not my wifi indicator.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have just burned the latest CD using infraRecorder, as per the instructions on this site, however when I boot from this CD, it spends about 5 minutes moving the red balls across my screen, then all of the sudden it just freezes, and my caps and scroll lock lights start to blink. I've had a look in the forums already but there's nothing about this happening on Boot of the live CD.

When I tried to turn it on some of the lights came on and the caps lock and num lock started flashing. Since then I have not been able to get it to work correctly.It once seemed to turn on but died again after the login window.I tried to use my live cd but the same thing happened. I`m running Ubuntu 10.04 x64 kernel 2.6.32-24 EDIT As I`ve just found out it`s not shift+alt that trigger scroll lock, but the fact of changing the keyboard layout. I`ve tried several other hotkey combinations as well as changing layout with the taskbar applet. All the same.

View 2 Replies View RelatedCannot log out of Lucid Lynx. Cap and Scroll lock LED blink and nothing defeats them. I have to shutdown the computer by switching it off.
I removed xorg.conf (which I had installed for screen resolution). After removing it, the shutdown worked well. No more blinking and hangup during shutdown.
But I lost the screen resolution.
I need the screen resolution. how to solve the blink issue. Does it have to do with something in the xorg.conf file causing this?
Can anyone at least clue me in as to what causes the "kernel panic"?
I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04. The Caps lock indicator on my keyboard is not working (always off). The Num lock indicator works fine. I have the same problem with other keyboards. The other keyboards work with Windows & DOS. This isn't a show-stopper, but I'd like to get it corrected as it's problematic when typing in passwords, etc. that have hidden fields.

The scenario was this :- I just downloaded the acpi using synaptic package manager. Then installed laptop mode tool using synaptic. cat /proc/sys/vm/laptop_mode 0
Means its not yet enabled. But decided to remove it .(read drive spin up and down is not good for HDD) Had left the laptop for some time , it dimmed screen . When I resumed it froze. No mouse movement.only blinking caps and scroll. Just wondering if acpi is the culprit,since haven't seen this behaviour before and it happened after removing laptop mode tools

The scroll lock key is the key that turns the back light on/off. Num light works/caps light works, but the scroll lock light does not on F12 or Ubuntu Thinking it may be a soft ware problem after trying different usb slots, I dug out an old XP machine and it works.
I am new to ubuntu and i'm loving it. I just cant figure out how the lights on my external hd lit up. in windows,if i install the smartware software, the lights will start to lit up to indicate the drive's capacity. now that i've switched to ubuntu. i can never make it to work
View 1 Replies View RelatedHave a HP Proliant DL380 which had Ubuntu installed. Have not used it for about 6 months but wanted to resurrect the machine. Switched it on and it would not boot. Went through the usual boot load then would freeze with a flashing scroll and caps lock. Thought I would just re install and recreate the partions but now when I try to install Ubuntu 9 from an offical disc I get the same error. I have attached a screen shot (well photo).

I am using a Linux machine with a KVM switch at work, and I commonly use emacs while switching between that machine and my other machine. I typically use the keyboard shortcut to swap between machines on the KVM, which is the key sequence: Scroll Lock, Scroll Lock, Up or Down. If I have an emacs window on top on Linux and hit these buttons, it will trap the Scroll Lock key presses and trigger a system beep from the CPU speaker. The KVM still switches, but on occasion, after the switch, it will register Scroll Lock as being stuck pressed, and so I'll be treated to an earful of system beeping. I have to switch back to the computer to get it to stop.Is there something I can put in the .emacs file that will prevent the program from beeping when I hit Scroll Lock with the window on top?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install CentOS 5.3 on a VMWare virtual machine running VMWareServe 1.0.4 build-56528. I have 8 virtual machines that are running some older kernel (RH FedoraCore 4) without any trouble. My system has an AMD Athlon XP 1800 processor and has 1G RAM. Every time during the installation after choosing skip media (I have already checked that the media is OK) I get a kernel OOPS and the capslock and scroll lock keys start blinking. My first guess was that this could be a ACPI issue, so I have disabled ACPI using the acpi=no boot option. The problem persists with the acpi=no option set. During the boot install process, I have seen some messages like this one
ACPI Exception (processor_core-xxxx): AE_NOT_FOUND, Processor Device is not present [xxxxxxxxx]
I have searched for this issue and found a RedHat Bug 435653 that reports this same issue, but this report is somewhat old, so i think that this issue as already been fixed and reflected to upstream. I have tried also to install using the text mode installation, but the same problem. To further isolate this problem, i have avoided the hardware detection and this was the first time that i have overcome the first screen (test media screen), as i have choosen with the success the language and the keybord layout. After choosing the beyboard layout, the kernel OOPS shows up again. On the screen 4 (debug screen) I don't see any relevant messages.
I am using Debian 7.8.0 (64-bit). I don't know what desktop environment I am using but it is the one that gets installed by default.
I have installed numlockx. Works fine in terms of turning Num Lock on automatically before the login screen. However, once logged in, Num Lock is automatically turned off. Is there a setting in Debian that I am missing so that Num Lock stays on all the time?
PS: Yes, I've turned on the Num Lock option in the BIOS!
You will not believe that. Such crazzy thing! When I first press the Shift key (in KDE session), the Numbers Lock function (LED) turn off. Then I have to press NumLock key twice to turn it on. First press has no effect. Second turn it on.
And another strange thing. I can disable this strange efect, if I manually turn NumLock off an then on.
I thing, I will rename Fedora to Pandora. Because there is more that little strange things. About 12 I counted. But there is no time and place to write all 12. Maybe another day.
i had it on my laptop dualbooted with Win 7. win 7 sucked and couldnt get anything to work but ubuntu worked flawlessly. so i decied to try and delete win 7 and only have ubuntu.i just tired installing a new ubuntu and eraseing everything elase. i dont need anything on this computer.i made a live usb stick and i can get to the install screen i pick my languge and install. then it goes to the screen were i need to pick default launge and then answer some questoins before i install. but the probmlem is that i cant use my mouse or keybored there. caps and nub lock lights wont turn on

The scrolling arrows are gone.Well this scrolling tab often vanishes before I can click on it to scroll down. Is there a way to revert to the old style, like the scrolling mechanism on these forums? Problem is that I cant click on dropbox, caffeine, battery indicator, wlan or sound indicator until I first click on messages menu and slide over to appindicator that I need. When screenlets appindicator is not present there is no problem. Its the same when I had Jupiter installed.

I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 on an old Sony Vaio laptop. I was following some of the steps here..[url]
The step "Enable Full DVD Playback(Dual Layer DVD Support)" did not finish correctly doh and now I can't use 'sudo apt-get' for anything or the software center or using the 'Update Manager' does not work.
The update manger says it may be caused by an update not finishing correctly which sounds correct as explained above. The apt-get command gives me back the following....'Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock resource temporarily unavailable' 'unable to lock administration directory /var/lib/dpkg is another process using it?'
I tried the obvious restart but that hasn't worked.
