Ubuntu :: Turn Off Upgrade Notice?
Jun 20, 2011i have upgraded a laptop to 11.04. doing so broke the wireless but i have fixed it.
i do not want the user to upgrade anymore so how do i turn off any future upgrade notices in the update manager?

Nov 5, 2010I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 desktop edition on one of my machines and its connected to internet via network proxy with username/password authentication enabled.
I've provided proxy details in Synaptic Package Manager and also in System -> Preferences -> Network Proxy. I can see any new updated libraries when I check Update Manager, but somehow I do not see the notice of availability of Ubuntu 10.10 and hence not able to upgrade.
On my home laptop (Dell Inspiron 700m) which connects to internet directly and over there I was able to upgrade to 10.10
So I think there is some problem with respect to update manager where it cant see the new release available behind proxy.
Ubuntu :: Installed The Upgrade Lucid And Display Does Not Turn Off?
May 4, 2010I just did the upgrade and I want to turn off the display after 30 minutes. I check that selection but the display does not turn off after 30 minutes. It is still on. I enabled this setting through the power management. The screen saver is on, go to blank display but the monitor does not turn off.
On Windows, dual boot on the same machine, the monitor does display off. I don't know if this is part of the problem or not, but when I go to "System -> Preferences", there are two different "Screensaver" options.
Ubuntu Installation :: Laptop Won't Turn On After Upgrade To Lucid?
May 16, 2010I had ubuntu 9.10, and every time i turned on my computer it would prompt me to upgrade, so finally i did. I let it upgrade over last night, then finished it this morning. when it went to restart, it turned off fine, but when it came back on, the screen goes through the Gateway first thing where it shows like F10 for boot from etc, and then the screen goes to a black command line looking screen, then it says ubuntu for a second, and then the screen goes black and does nothing. i let it sit for about an hour to see if it was just running slow, but it was still black when i checked it, so now my laptop is useless until i figure something out.

Jan 6, 2011I always manually check Update Manager and there are updates, but I never received any kind of notice indicating such. I thought some sort of popup or notice was supposed to appear in the panel or something to alert me that updates are available? Am I mistaken? Is there a setting I need to activate be alerted that updates are available?

All seems to run fine, and before the yesterday afternoon upgrade, compiz appears disabled and each time I try to enable it I get the error message.I checked the direct rendering is working. Google Earth works fine also, so all seems to be OK.

Mar 24, 2010My daughter from New Zealand gave me her Acer Aspire 4315 Laptop/Notebook Linux System in December 2009 so that I could use it in bed on days that I was unable to get out to use my main computer as I am a very ill man. I was able to log into the unit as she just said to me to use her name and password to. I have been able to use the unit on the internet at home and my other daughters home through a home wireless system. I clicked on the Upgrade Icon which it did, I think it went from a 7. something to 8.something All the way through the set up it asked me questions and I just clicked yes thinking that was what I had to do. My problem now is, that when I turn the unit on it asks me for a username and password. I put the details my daughter gave me but it tells me invalid user and password. All I do know is that a friend of my daughter installed the Ubuntu Program onto the Laptop/Notebook. Can anyone tell me how or what I have to do now to be able to use the unit again as I am getting very frustrated with the whole thing. I am not used to using Ubuntu and am totally lost with it as I have always been a Microsoft user.

Aug 19, 2010I am running latest apache2 available in the lucid repos on my desktop. All packages are updated as of this moment. Now in the root of my web server I have placed several soft links that point to folders on another ext3/ntfs partitions on the same disk. When I try to download any large file (say above 500M)on this server using firefox, when the 'save' window appears, my desktop freezes, I notice very high cpu-ram-disk usage, even though I have not yet clicked on 'ok' to save the file. This issue is not present when the file size is small. Note that firefox and the webserver are running on the same computer.
Also I have tried nginx and lighttpd and the issue is present there as well. When I tried downloading the same files using Internet Explorer 6.0 using a XP VM the issue is not present. However on Windows as well using Firefox the issue recurs.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 Logs Out Automatically Without Notice?
Feb 16, 2010Well, its been 2 days since I have had Suse 11.2 on this laptop. (Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo M7400 1.6 GHz Centrino, 60GB HDD)Everything seems to work in order, but at certain times, the computer will just log out on its own, without any reason. It gives no error when it does this, so there is no way for me to determine what the cause is. As far as the rest of the OS goes, everything seems perfectly fine, except for the automatic log out the computer does. It just annoys me when the computer logs out by itself sometimes because then I am lost on where I was before, since nothing gets saved when it does this. It makes things really challenging when you are typing something as I am now and then the computer just logs itself out on its own, leaving me with nothing because it does not save anything. And if so, what are the repair steps to this issue??

Nov 4, 2009I have Ubuntu 9.04, and a HP laserjet 1018 printer.
I install the printer using:
And when it ask me about plugin I give the path to it. (the 3.9.2 version of the plugin, because Ubuntu 9.04 has the 3.9.2 version of hplip)
well I install the printer, everything works perfectly.....but, when I turn off the PC, and turn it on again, the printer does NOT work!, I send work for being printed but mothing happens , Ubuntu tells me that the job was printed but ... no case, my printer does not print it.
I have to install it again since cero. what can I don to stop install it every time I turn off the computer ?

Nov 3, 2010I downloaded Fedora-14-i686-Live-Desktop.iso and used the Fedora liveusb-creator to put this on a 2GB USB stick. Everything seemed to have gone well and it said complete; however, when I try to boot from the USB stick, I get a black screen with a linux copyright notice at the top and it just stays at that screen forever. I tried this on two computers with the same results.
I'd previously tried with Ubuntu and had a similar issue, it would go to a purple (if I remember correctly) Ubuntu screen and it sat that forever.
