View 1 RepliesFor some reason the general launcher button (+ in circle) in the unity menu has disappeared. I do not know how to restore it. Which means I have great problems to start al apps that are not standard in the menu.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have installed Ubuntu for a friend and find that on that installation Audio CD's are not automatically visible.
Data CD's appear fine and audio CDs are visible with some software (e.g. with RipperX) but they are not visible in the file system and cannot be played directly (e.g. with RythmBox).
With my installation of Ubuntu (also 10.4), as soon as I insert an audio-CD, I am prompted as to whether I want to open the CD with RythmBox. This does not happen with the other installation.
Does anyone have any tips here? Do audio-CD's demand that a certain package is installed for them to be visible/playable?
PS: I have recently changed the DVD-drive to a CD-drive. Do I need to re-declare the drive parameters?
I have a folder on a fat32 partition that is mounted in both os's on my system.(Ubuntu 10.4 and Win 7) When I go to windows 7 the partion is mounted but I can not find the Music Folder on the drive. When i have it booted in linux I have access to the Music folder. The last change on my system I made was I ran edna-0.6 for a day so I could stream the contents of the folder. I need to figure out how to get access to these in windows again.

View 2 Replies View RelatedUbuntu 10.04 I removed the Me Menu from the panel and then put it back (right click -> Add to Panel -> Indicator Applet Session). The Me Menu came back, but my name is not on the panel. When the Me Menu came back it was just a small blank on the panel next to the Power Button. There was no name, no icon, no nothing to tell me that was the Me Menu. In fact, I only accidentally found it when I happened to click in that blank space. I checked to see if there was any sort of Preferences setting for the Me Menu so I could get it to display my name for me to click on (like it did before), but could not see a setting like that. How can I make the Me Menu to be more visible than just a blank spot on the panel?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a machine (Asus P4PE + 120GB SATA HDD) which has been running Karmic very successfully for a long time. I recently made the decision to upgrade to Lucid via the Update Manager. The upgrade seemed to go OK - no obvious errors - but the resulting version of Lucid had some weird problems: desktop messed-up, printers wouldnt work any more, etc. So I concluded I had been unlucky - the upgrade had gone wrong and I tried to install Lucid afresh from a CD.
Every time I try this, the install gets to the page to specify partitions but this page is blank. No partitions are visible. The buttons to create a partition, etc. are all greyed-out. I have tried various boot options like removing quiet splash, setting noapic/nolapic, etc. but nothing seems to work. I can happily run Lucid from the CD, no problem. I have also checked I have not got RAID accidentally installed, as mentioned elsewhere on this forum.
I am able to reinstall Karmic so I know theres a filesystem there but the Lucid installer cannot see it. Any suggestions on how to proceed very welcome!
At the moment my only option seems to be to regress to Karmic.
I made a media station with XBMC and this is working just fine. Now I have an internal hard disk NTFS formatted loaded with multimedia stuff. I would like to appear the disk as directory in my home. Example: /home/xbmc/multimedia where multimedia redirects to the root of the NTFS disk. Is this possible?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just installed Banshee v1.80 on Ubuntu 10.10 and was looking to import my music from my external HD. I pluged the HD in and copied all of the music in it to my music folder, (ALL 2,604 SONGS).I then went into banshee and set the folder for my music library to be /home/matt/Music, where i put THE 2,604 SONGS.Banshee started to scan the songs, all the way up through THE 2,604th. After it was finished i navigated to all music in the banshee side pane and there was only 394.
After some research i found that this was because only 394 of the songs actually had .mp3 or a similar extension at the end of the file name.I've spent the past hour trying to figure out how to either append the appropriate extension to all the files, or how to get banshee to see the files without any extension, to no avail.
I downloaded Ubuntu Server. I absolutely love it. It is easy to set up and I've already learned alot while doing so.
Now, I want to get a bit further. I want my Ubuntu Server to be accessible from the internet, so I can access my files and webpages from everywhere.
Everything works locally, but I don't have any clue to maken it visible for WAN. Is everything from here set in the router settings? Or will I also have to make adjustments in the Server's settings?
I've been searching around the internet for the last two days trying to solve this problem, because I know how much everyone hates people who ask questions without looking first. Alas, I haven't found anything.
I have Ubuntu Server 11.04 running on a spare machine, which I've configured and got running just fine. I am trying to set up an IRC server on this machine for some friends of mine using UnrealIRCd. I have built and configured the server program, and am able to run it. Anyone who is connected to my home router (wirelessly or hard-wired) can connect to the server while it is up using either the internal IP, external (router) IP, or the dyndns.org name which is tied to the external IP.
However, anyone outside my home network cannot connect to the server. I DO have ports 6660-6669 forwarded on my router (IRC standard port is 6667). When connected to an external network, I cannot join the server by using the external IP, nor the DNS name.
I also have OpenSSH set up on the server machine, and have port 22 forwarded on my router. I CAN ssh into my server machine from within my home network, and I CAN ssh into my server machine from an external network.
Strangely, I can successfully ping my DNS name from inside my network, but not from outside. This doesn't make sense to me considering I am able to successfully ssh into the machine.
I have tried to get familiar with ubuntu and kubuntu few times. With kubuntu I had multi-display problem which I couldn't solve myself. Then I changed to ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10. I did not have multi-display problem but wireless network problem which I could not solve myself either.I try once more with ubuntu 11.04 but now I try to use your help to progress to avoid many days and evenings wasted time.So again I have problem to connect to wireless network.
- I can see wireless access points
- When I try to connect one of them after entering router password after a moment I get error to not able to connect and I am asked the password again. (WPA & WPA2)
- Wired network works ok.
- Router is Buffalo WBMR-G125
- Wireless USB adapter is Buffalo WLI-UC-G300n
- Computer is self made PC with Asus M4 motherboard
i know the ubuntu system is operating and on but i cant see it clearly. the light is not bright... I have faced his problem since i downloaded the ubuntu.. is it because of the graphic card?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 on a USB stick, using the Universal USB installer.
I managed to boot from USB but one of the problems seems that the new launch manager, I think it's part of unity, is not visible. I tried pushing the mouse pointer to the left edge of the screen but the launcher does not appear.
I did go into system settings -> Launcher and Menus and all seems fine.
I am a competent Linux user for a little over a couple years now, having run several versions of Fedora, Mint, Xubuntu, and others for about a month before settling on The Ubuntu Netbook Remix when it was version 9.10. Loved it. Used it as long as I could until I was informed that my version could no longer be supported. So I went to 10.04, and used that for a while... but didn't know at the time that I could switch between desktop environments... and it stuck me with the classic view. This was OK, but I'm using an Asus Netbook (1005PE)... And sorely missed the Netbook UI.
So I went and upgraded to Version 10.10. Mutter was a MESS. It was so choppy and unpredictable I only used it a few times before getting frustrated and switching back to the classic compiz UI.
But I still like the idea behind the UI, so I downloaded and ran the 11.04 version live off a flash drive (I LOVE that ability!)... and Unity worked fine. I actually liked it. So I upgraded to version 11 and booted up to find that Unity is not visible.
I can log in to the classic view just fine... But logging in under Unity will display the background and provide seemingly full functionality (If I know where to click!), but I can't actually see the UI until I click an invisible button. Once I do that, the program or menu alone becomes visible, and works fine. I just can't see Unity.
I am using ubuntu 9.10 but when I insert my kindston usb it is not active, not visible, a software I should install? This problem is solved. how can I change the display tag ?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with one of my partitions, that used to be automounted trough fstab, before my upgrade to Lucid.
The partitions is used for storing all things related to virtualization. It's purpose is not relevant to the error, I think.
The affected part of the fstab file looks as follows:
Code:
# backuppartition on sdb
UUID=b623c9a2-8d4a-4399-be07-b8b1c74d23fd /backup ext4 defaults 1 3
# Virtualization Partition

View 9 Replies View RelatedThis is my second Ubuntu installation so I am not a pro. I downloaded and installed latest Ubuntu Desktop version (10.04.1 I think). Installation went fine without any problems until rebooting after completion. During shutdown the installation CD was ejected and some error occurred. I had to do a hard shut down in order to restart. Start and login no problem. The problem I have is that there is no Program/status bar visible (where Application, Places and System menues are). I tried to move the mouse around in order to see if menues are outside of screen but it's not.
The only thing I can do is:
- right-click to bring up "Create folder, launcher etc" menu
- press F1 to bring up Help screen
- press power button (on pc) to bring up shut down dialog
I search for some answers here and the only one I found wass SHIFT+F2 to bring som launch bar but that didn't work. Is there something wrong with the installation or am I missing some secret keycombinations to bring up program bar?
When I log into the standard netbook environment (not the one called 2D) I get a blank desktop with blank (yet active) bars across the top and on the left of the screen. Mousing over the invisible icons on the left opens empty text boxes of varying sizes showing how long the name of the application is... I can open the applications by clicking blindly on that bar. The bar across the top is also active, I can open the menues by clicking in the right corner and moving the mouse until the one I want is open.
I have tried removing and reinstalling Unity as well as installing and removing fglrx. I posted originally in the following thread until I realised the OP there was describing a very different problem:
