Ubuntu Networking :: Server Not Visible From Outside

May 3, 2011

I've been searching around the internet for the last two days trying to solve this problem, because I know how much everyone hates people who ask questions without looking first. Alas, I haven't found anything.

I have Ubuntu Server 11.04 running on a spare machine, which I've configured and got running just fine. I am trying to set up an IRC server on this machine for some friends of mine using UnrealIRCd. I have built and configured the server program, and am able to run it. Anyone who is connected to my home router (wirelessly or hard-wired) can connect to the server while it is up using either the internal IP, external (router) IP, or the dyndns.org name which is tied to the external IP.

However, anyone outside my home network cannot connect to the server. I DO have ports 6660-6669 forwarded on my router (IRC standard port is 6667). When connected to an external network, I cannot join the server by using the external IP, nor the DNS name.

I also have OpenSSH set up on the server machine, and have port 22 forwarded on my router. I CAN ssh into my server machine from within my home network, and I CAN ssh into my server machine from an external network.

Strangely, I can successfully ping my DNS name from inside my network, but not from outside. This doesn't make sense to me considering I am able to successfully ssh into the machine.

Networking :: Changes On The Server Side Aren't Visible On The Client Side?

Jan 10, 2011

I'm using NFS and I have the following problem. After ~100 days, the client and server lose connection, but the client doesn't know about this, it gives no error. The problem is that the changes on the server side aren't visible on the client side.

The nfs options are: "noatime, nolock, hard, udp, notcp, nosuid, nodev, rsize=8192, wsize=8192, actimeo=60"

The kernel version is: 2.6.16.27 built with 250 Hz. Is this an already corrected issue in a kernel version? Or are my options wrong?

Ubuntu Networking :: Samba Shares Not Visible On The Network?

Jan 24, 2010

I'm trying to share some folders over the network, but the shared folders are not visible on another computer. This is through double clicking my computer from the Network list in Nautilus. However, I can access the share by typing the full address(<computer name>/<share name>) in "File > Connect to Server...".Since I can't type the address manually from my blu-ray drive, I need to get the shares to show on the network. What is wrong with my settings?

Ubuntu Networking :: Shared Folders No Longer Visible

Feb 23, 2010

I have two computers in the house that I have shared folders and one has a shared printer. I have a desktop running 9.04 and a laptop running 9.10. The desktop has several shared folders and a shared HP printer. The laptop only has one shared folder. Everything was working fine up until a couple days ago. I went on the laptop to access one of the desktop shared folders, and nothing shows up under "places, network" except windows network.

It no longer shows that the printer is currently shared either, but the funny thing is that I can still print to the desktop from the laptop.I just can't figure out how to access the shared folders.

Ubuntu Networking :: Network Not Visible In Dialogue Boxes

Oct 12, 2010

I've set up Samba under Ubuntu for windows SMB file sharing (currently unauthenticated but soon to be backed off against A.D.) This is great within Windows where l folders are available as mounted in all applications but from my Ubuntu desktop and Ubuntu laptops, we can only access network folders and files from the File browsers and bookmarks one finds in the "Places" menu. Our issue is that most (but not all) dialogue boxes don't have any options for viewing non-local files and folders. i.e. when I'm in my web browser and I go to upload a file from our local network file server to an internet location, the "Open" dialogue box cannot see any of our local network locations.

Ubuntu Networking :: Samba Shared Printer Not Visible?

Nov 14, 2010

I am trying to access a shared printer from one Ubuntu PC to another.

On the Server PC, I have the printer working, I have set it to shared, and I have set the server setting to Publish shared printers. I can see and use the printer fine from a windows PC.

On my Ubuntu Client PC, I have samba installed, including smbclient, and all other samba components I can think of. I can see other computers on my home workgroup (Windows and Ubuntu fine). I can also add a printer connected to my windows PC. However I cannot find the printer connected to the other ubuntu PC.

I see the instruction in the Samba guide saying

"Now enter your Ubuntu Samba Print Server (set up as above) IP address in the box on the left titled "smb://"."

However I do not have fixed ip addresses, so what am I supposed to enter in the box. If I enter nothing I can browse the network and can see the host computer, but the printer is not displayed. I can also see the printer connected to the windows PC. How do I 'see' the Ubuntu printer?

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Network Is Visible But Disabled - How To Connect

Jul 23, 2010

I have a weird problem that I can't find the answer for in the forums or docs. I can see the wireless network in Network Manager, but it is grayed-out and inaccessible. Other wireless networks are white and I can click on them and connect to them (or could if I knew the password).

My work computer, an IBM ThinkPad T43 running Win 7, connects.
My personal computer, a Dell Latitude C640 running Ubuntu 10.04, sees the network as grayed-out and therefore I have no option to connect to it.

I have tried the following:Checked for hardware drivers - the system says "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system"
Verified that the network security settings are the same on both my work and personal computers: WPA2-Personal
Why can I see the network but it is disabled/grayed-out?

It is like "http:e-learning.local". I can access this site from any windows machine, but I can't access it from ubuntu. Only if I use IP address, I can access it. However, I have normal access to other sites on the Internet.

Do you have any suggestion how to solve this problem?

Ubuntu Networking :: Laptop Can't Connect To Visible Networks After Upgrading / Resolve This?

Jun 1, 2011

After upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04 and running an update ubuntu can't connect to any wifi networks, although it can see them perfectly (and potentially unrelated, the windows partition is having major dns issues with the wifi too).

I've looked around and can't find an obvious fix, just a bunch of posts from people with the same problem that wasn't solved. I got frustrated and was about to install 10.10 again but I noticed I couldn't connect to the wifi on the liveCD either. I then tried the 10.04 liveCD, and the internet worked aswell as when I installed it. However before when I upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 I had no problems with the wifi, so it leads me to suspect that there was something installed/some setting in 10.04 that is missing from the latter version.

When I'm connected, I have two problems: All my internet traffic goes through the VPN. My computer is no longer visible on my local network. I waste a lot of time connecting and disconnecting the VPN. Is there any way I can set up a VPN so that I am still on my local network and only requests to 172.x.x.x go through the VPN. I suspect it can be done with iptables, but all the info about iptables goes WAY over my head.

Ubuntu Networking :: Shared Folder Not Visible / Error: Failed To Mount Windows Share?

Jan 2, 2010

I have two computers running Ubuntu 9.10, both have one shared folder. These were set up via Nautilus.

On computer 1 I can see and use the shared folder of computer 2 just fine.

On computer 2 I can NOT see the shared folder of computer 1 anymore since recently. I has worked in the past.

Some more information: the name of computer 1 is "daniel", the share name is "gedeeld". So the address of the shared folder of computer 1 would be smb://daniel/gedeeld/
Opening this address in Nautilus works fine on computer 1 (that shares the folder), but results in an error on computer 2.

Error: failed to mount Windows share. Please select another viewer and try again.

Ubuntu :: Audio CD's Not Visible

Sep 8, 2010

I have installed Ubuntu for a friend and find that on that installation Audio CD's are not automatically visible.

Data CD's appear fine and audio CDs are visible with some software (e.g. with RipperX) but they are not visible in the file system and cannot be played directly (e.g. with RythmBox).

With my installation of Ubuntu (also 10.4), as soon as I insert an audio-CD, I am prompted as to whether I want to open the CD with RythmBox. This does not happen with the other installation.

Does anyone have any tips here? Do audio-CD's demand that a certain package is installed for them to be visible/playable?

PS: I have recently changed the DVD-drive to a CD-drive. Do I need to re-declare the drive parameters?
