I need to reinstall my windows 7 partition, but I don't want to lose my ubuntu partition. Currently I just have both installed and grub is dealing with my booting options.Is there any way I can reinstall windows without messing up grub or my ubuntu partition?

I've had some crap experience (my fault) with grub before and would like to make sure I have a plan. I've downloaded the 10.10 64 bit. Can I simply boot and install 10.10 64 bit without concern of messing up grub? Horror story: Installed ubuntu once before with dual boot and somehow grub couldn't find windows

I've dual booted Ubuntu and Windows for years now and I've installed OSx86 on a separate drive which Grub2 picked up automagically and everything has been working great -- except I'm out of space. So I bought a 1.5 TB drive and installed win7 into sda1 (100MB NTFS bootloader for windows) and sda2 (50 GB NTFS windows drive). I now want to install two or three flavors of Linux. I'm thinking Ubuntu 10.04, Debian 5.05, and (if I'm bold enough) gentoo. each in 50GB partitions. I've already partitioned the drive a bit putting a 1.2 TB shared NTFS partition at the end (sda10), and a 2 GB swap parition just before that(sda9) My questions are:
(1) can all my linux distro's share that 2GB swap, or does each need it's own dedicated swap partition (installers generally assume you do)?
(2) can I re-partition space in the middle of the drive without messing with windows(sda1&2) and the shared part. (sda10)?
I'm trying to re-install Grub2 on a dual boot (Win/XP & Ubuntu 10.10) system which will not boot. I am following the guide here:

However, the final step results in this warning message: "grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR. This is a BAD idea....."
I guess I agree - that's not what I want to do. Where is the defect in the procedure and how do I overcome it? If I try alternative advice, available in the forums, by using the command

I am actually facing a vague problem here. I was previously running Windows XP and Ubuntu . Ubuntu was installed Windows XP The problem is
1. First I tried to do some disk partitioning. That ended up with some error.
2. Ignoring that, I went to install Windows 7 over Windows XP but I was not able to proceed with Windows 7 , because the partitions were corrupted.
3. So I used Ubuntu LIVE CD (Grub was lost at this point )and used 'testdisk' and recovered the partitions.
4. Now installed the Windows 7 successfully.
5. Now again I moved to Ubuntu Live CD to write the GRUB. After which I tried restarting
6. Now Ubuntu is booting perfectly as before. But the problem is with Windows
7. The GRUB loader instead of showing Windows 7, it shows Windows XP !!! . and there is no other entry for windows. When I tried opening it, it says "error, cant read file" and further inout moves back to the grub loader list again.
"How do I change the entry to Windows 7 from Windows XP and boot Windows7 successfully " I tried it a couple of times, same thing happens . So how to change the entry?
I'm thinking about upgrading my Windows Vista to Windows 7. I rarely ever use it but I figured that when I do have to use it I would rather use Windows 7.
Will it mess up Ubuntu or GRUB when I do this? Like GRUB not recognizing Ubuntu any more? I don't really know but I just wanted to ask this here just in case.

Some days ago I decided to reinstall windows, of course windows wiped Grub of the MBR. No problem. I booted of the live CD (9.10) and tried to reinstall grub, I had Ubuntu 9.10 installed before windows wiped grub. sda3 is my root partition, sda2 is the partition where all my media files are located. I mounted /dev/sda3 to /media/root and then I tried to reinstall grub with: sudo grub-install --root-directory=/media/root /dev/sda It came out with no errors, and then I restarted my computer. Grub started, but with a command line. It was the 1,97 beta-4 version. Since I'm quite unfamiliar with GRUB (or really technical linux stuff)
I dual-boot ubuntu 9.04 and windows 7. I recently reinstalled windows, and it wiped grub-legacy off of my MBR. Reinstalling grub shouldn't be tough, right, especially with clear instructions? Anyway, I can't get anywhere with the official instructions here: [URL]. The first issue is that the current live CD has no program "grub" in terminal. I dug up an old live cd, but I couldn't get anything with the directions:
Find where Grub is. If this gives a few different answers then you will need to find the correct one, perhaps by trial-and-error.

So I'm really at a loss. What should I do?
-Can I install Grub 2 on my MBR? Will that work with 9.04?
-Can I access my 9.04 install, copy files to Windows, and then just format the partition and clean install 10.04?
I got a system crippling virus on my windows installation. My recovery disks gave me the same problem. So I installed Win 7 enterprise using a disk my dad got from his work. The installation went smoothly. When I started my computer after it went straight to Win 7 without the GRUB bootloader (not the case with restore disks). Could somebody please help me with this issue because I cant stand using Windows for anything other than games much longer.
View 7 Replies View RelatedMy old-ish Dell laptop is currently running Windows 2000 and Ubuntu 9.10. I originally installed 2000 to try and squeeze a bit more performance out of the laptop for general use, but in practise Ubuntu is running great and sees far more use than the Win2K installation so I've decided to create a stripped-down (i.e. non-networked) XP installation purely to run a few favourite audio applications.
I plan to do a fresh Windows install and wipe the current C: partition. Is there anything I should be aware of in terms of the GRUB bootloader. Will it simply recognise the new XP installation? Obviously I will back up my data before I continue, but are there any other precautions to take with respect to dual-booting? I could do without having to reinstall Ubuntu too!

So, I had to reinstall Windows XP since my previous installation gave me a blue screen error due to reasons unfathomable. Naturally, this deleted the GNU Grub and I could not login to my Fedora.
I read that apparently booting from a DVD installation offers an option to enter the rescue mode. I did not have a DVD, I only had the LiveCD so I had to figure out a way to reinstall Grub from the LiveCD. The following method seemed to do the trick.
Run the LiveCD and open Terminal.

So I was bored yesterday, looking at some free unpartitioned space (I meant to use it as emergency space, just in case) and I thought that it'd be really nice if I could make a ~250 MB partition just for GRUB, so I decided to see if I could do it. View 1 Replies View RelatedI played a bit with partitions. I'm not an experienced Ubuntu user, neither I have solid understanding of partitioning. And I hardly remember exact actions that led to this problem. I remember that I saw a warning in GParted that said that the partition was out of bounds or something.. But I followed some solution that I found on ubuntuforums and used fdisk to fix that. So, after installation of Ubuntu I couldn't boot into WindowsXP (after choosing Windows entry in grub2 menu I see only blinking cursor on black screen). But what's more important that I can easily mount Windows partition from Ubuntu. Also I tried to boot from Windows repair console and used FIXBOOT command, and copied[url].... and [url].... files to no avail..Here is the summary of what I got now:

I want to wipe out my Windows partition and reinstall due to sluggishness. I plan to use Windows instructions as if it was on a hard drive by itself. Will this affect the multi-boot capability or the Linux partition in any way? Would it be easier to reformat and partition the entire hard drive and re-install both OSes? I use OpenSuse 11.2 and Windows XP.

Should I install grub on the Windows hard drive or will Windows hate on me for that? Earlier I tried installing grub on the slave with the Fedora system, but I had trouble configuring Grub in a way that it would understand and I ended up messing up the MBRs of both hard drives.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just installed ubuntu on a partition on my laptop that already had a windows7 partition. First I had Kubuntu installed, but I decided to just try Ubuntu instead. I did things the right way when I installed Kubuntu and I could switch between OSes on reboot. Then when I installed Ubuntu I accidentally put grub on /dev/sda1 instead of /dev/sda. I didn't even notice for a while because I never felt like I needed to go back to Windows until I felt like playing starcraft 2. That's when I noticed that when the boot options screen appears and I select Windows, the screen goes black, a cursor flashes in the upper left corner for about a second, then the boot options screen reappears.
If I boot using my windows 7 cd and go into recovery, get a command prompt and type Bootrec.exe /FixMbr and Bootrec.exe /FixBoot, the options appear to complete successfully, but then when I reboot, I get a permanent flashing cursor.
If I follow that by inserting my parted magic cd and running testdisk and overwriting the mbr, I get back to the first situation where the boot options screen will appear, but the windows boot loader just returns me to the boot options screen. I can get into ubuntu, at least. Whenever I run testdisk I can't replace the boot with the backup boot because I'm pretty sure it's identical to the flawed one.
How do I reinstall GRUB after a Windows install? I tried using the LiveCD but when I pop in the CD and type

I re-installed Windows over an old Windows partition. The hard-drive used to have Windows and Ubuntu on it. I am now in usb live ubuntu because grub doesn't appear anymore when I boot the computer (it boots in the new windows automatically). The ubuntu partition is still there, as I can access my files from this live usb. I'd just like to know how to re-install grub.

How do I get my Grub boot loader back? I googled it and found instructions, but they were from 2007 so I thought it might only be for Grub Legacy. The instructions were as follows:
Boot from a live cd
run "sudo grub" in a terminal
then, "root (hd0,0)", "setup (hd0)", and "exit"
reboot and grub should be present

I have ubuntu 10.10 running on my HP dv5 pavilion laptop So today i tried to reinstall grub on my pc .. i removed grub-pc and grub-common using synaptic then booted up with a live cd of ubuntu 10.04 i then mounted sda11 to mnt using sudo mount /dev/sda11 /mnt sda11 being my ubuntu directory containing the /boot then i installed grub to it using sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda it reported as installation finished.No error reported then i unmounted /mnt and checked for /boot/grub/grub.cfg seems like the file is missing so are the files in /etc/grub.d/ reinstall my grub back
View 9 Replies View Relatedfor some reason Win7 has gone and run a startup repair (there was two boot options in GRUB, perhaps I chose the wrong one by accident) which has corrupted my GRUB. Now, the only way I can get anything to run is by booting Ubuntu of a live-pendrive/flashdrive! I tried following a couple of walkthroughs that claimed to fix the problem; and I don't doubt that they work - on someone elses computer! I receive errors whenever I try to use things like 'sudo grub' and often (but not always) with 'mkdir' and 'mount' - and I have very little idea what some of them are doing (I gather 'mkdir' is making a directory and 'mount' is mounting a device virtually, but some others are a little harder to guess)
So, I am wondering if someone has a little insight as to how I can fix this and perhaps point me in the correct direction to learning about making my way around ubuntu and these fancy terminal commands! Currently, I am at the stage where I can boot into my flash drive by spamming escape before the bootloader. However, when GRUB loads it tells me there is an error and gives me a command line; through which I have been unable to get anything to happen. I am running Ubuntu 10.10, I believe, and Windows 7 on the same hard-disk and possibly the same partition (though, I am unsure of how Ubuntu works itself into partition's). The thing is that I had installed Windows 7 in the hard disk drive so I decided to install Ubuntu alongside with it. After the process of installation everything was cool but I hadn't the Grub working. I then pressed the Shift button during the booting process so I got the Grub menu but it didn't show the Windows 7 partition. The Windows installation was not erased because its file system is present in Nautilus. I have tried reinstalling the Grub a thousand times but nothing changes. I have attached the results of the boot info script so you can have some info about my booting configuration.

A Windows XP (hd0,2) and an Ubuntu 9.10 (hd0,1).I have been using the Windows mainly and ran a program that changes the HDD's serial number. Now when I boot up and Grub loads, I try to access the Windows partition and get the following error:
Error: No Such Device: 2e3857fb3857c08f
I am still able to boot the Ubuntu partition but can not seem to get grub to point to the Windows partition any more. This is very frustrating as I really need to get back into that partition soon.
