Ubuntu :: Sync Between A Network Folder?
May 4, 2011
I'm wondering what the best way to sync certain folders located on my network server with my Ubuntu laptop is. I've tried Unity, but it was a little too geeky for me . Dropbox would be perfect, except people were having issues syncing with network folders, some losing all their files in the process. All I want to do is synchronize a few folders with my local "My Documents" folder on my Ubuntu laptop, so I can write my school papers without an internet connection. Then, when I'm connected again, I should be able to sync with the folder on the network. It should also work vice-versa as well (update a file on the NETWORK, sync, then access the updated file on my Ubuntu laptop).

I am thinking of using rsync to sync my Music folder to another folder called Music on an external USB drive. I will be using the Scheduled Tasks front end to schedule the syncs. What should the syntax look like when I put it in Scheduled tasks. I want this to be as simple as possible.

I'm dual-booting Windows 7 and Lucid, and I want to sync my documents folder from /windows (a mounted ntfs partition) to Ubuntu One. I right-click and it lets me click on sync with Ubuntu One, but then it does nothing. I've checked and I am able to sync other folders from my ext4 filesystem. Any ideas?

How can I sync a folder between Ubuntu's main drive (ext4) and Windows 7... My case is, I want to get Pidgin (using it on Ubuntu and Win7) saving the chat logs in one "common" folder. I tried using the "Make Link" thing but on Win7 the folder I made link to appeared as a file. So yea, basically I wanna know how to sync a folder. Also if someone could help me, the chat logs saved by Pidgin in Win7 are saved somewhere in Documents and Settings, probably not giving me the option to change where the logs get saved.

I did some searching, but haven't found a good solution to this problem I'm having. While there are a lot of issues with syncing between my desktop and netbook (we'll get to them another time), I am really trying to get two folders from my desktop to sync to Ubuntu One. I followed the reinstall steps here a few times and it has almost fixed the problem.
My last issue is that my .mozilla folder won't sync at all. If I right click on it in Nautilus, I get a greyed out "stop syncing with Ubuntu One." I can't stop it and can't start it. If I do u1sdtool --list-folders, then this folder isn't shown. I've tried disconnecting, reconnecting, and a lot in between. My question is, is there a config file or something like that where maybe this .mozilla folder is still set up that I can just delete? Clearly, it thinks it's set up when it isn't and I'm not sure if there's somewhere on the filesystem that can be checked or cleared. One thing I did notice when I was going through the instructions above is that I don't have a .share folder and thus no /local/ubuntuone under that.

OS: ubuntu 10.04 lts. Runing on latest oracle virtualbox vers.
This works:
Established ubuntu one. Able to log into ubuntu one. Able to make folders.
This doesn't work:
When uploading files, it prompts "uploading". But never finish. And files do not get uploaded. To sync a folder on desktop and ubuntu one never works.

I have 2 Mounts /mnt/Movies and /media/Movies, mnt goes to a network drive that is mounted via cifs and media is also a network drive mounted via NFS. I normally keep drives in sync using rsync and have done so with these drives. But for some reason there's a bunch of files that on /media/Movies that just wont copy over to /mnt/Movies. I've tried touching the files and then running rsync with the whole file option it picks up the files need to be sync'd but they don't appear.
I've tried using cp on the missing files but the files just never appear but it does take about the right time for the prompt to come back indicating it would be copying the data. So my next idea was to use mc. I compared the 2 directories and it selects 83 files that are not in both folders, so then I tell it to copy them, and it comes back saying 'target already exists', if I overwrite or update they still don't appear. I've unmounted the shares, reboot the server and both network drives and run the network drives disk check but nothings helping. I'm trying to avoid deleting the folder and just rsyncing everything again.

I've setup both a http server and svn server and have a SVN project residing in the "/srv/svn/kdrepos/THOR/" directory. I would like this project to automatically do a checkout into the /srv/www/htdocs/ on update/commit. Is this in any way possiblely? Some sites (xp-dev) for example offer an option to have a repository automatically 'added' to a webserver. Does anyone know how is done? I'd xp-dev if it wasn't for the fact that I also need full access rights on the machine

I have a simple question: Presume I have two (or more) computers set up with Ubuntu One. I copy the exact same file manually into my Ubuntu One folder on two computers, will the U1 service realise this and not download it again? For example, I want to copy to the cloud a large file so that I can share it with others. It will upload to the server from the computer I first copy it to. Then on the second computer I copy it to the Ubuntu One folder as well, because I don't want to download it since I already have it. Will the U1 service on the second computer see the local file and skip the download?

Cron refuses to work when trying to sync with a network drive. I am trying to setup a cron job to backup a folder in my home directory ('/home/scratch') to a folder ('home/internet_backup') that is mounted (using nfs) to a network folder. The folder ('home/internet_backup') is mounted correctly to the network folder upon system startup, so this part works.
I created a simple bash file (rsync-shell.1.sh) that looks like this:
Code:
# backup the contents of 'scratch' (of 'internet' machine) into '/home/aa/internet_backup/'
# the latter folder ('/home/aa/internet_backup/') is mounted to 'developer' machine
rsync -av --exclude=".*" /home/aa/scratch /home/aa/internet_backup/
#
When manually running this bash file from my home directory (./rsync-shell.1.sh) everything works, and the contents are written to the destination folder. Yet, instead of running this manually, I wanted this to be executed by Cron every 30 min. so I first chmod +x this file, and then copied it (using sudo) to /root.
I then created the following using 'sudo crontab -e':
Code:
# m h dom mon dow command
10 * * * * /root/rsync-shell.1.sh
This is the same bash file illustrated above, yet, it doesn't work (files are not being written to the destination folder).

What's a good back up utility with a scheduling feature that can back up to a network hard drive? I'm backing up to an NTFS formatted external that is connected to my router and I would like the files to be backed up individually so they can be browsed by other PCs (Windows & Linux) on my network, as opposed to a disc image or archive like some back up programs.

I want to sync several directories between my laptop and desktop both at home and away from home. It seems like the tool to use for this is unison (I use rysnc for backups, but union seemed, better for this sort of thing - let me know if I'm wrong).
I found several posts that appear promising, however I was little confused about the details as I don't have much networking experience up to this point.
[URL]
1) Is a reverse ssh connection the way to go? If I only wanted to do this on my home network I could just use ssh right, however in order to get around the router outside my home network the reverse ssh is necessary?
2) How do I handle changing IP address of my laptop?

I am interested and looking forward to get a smartphone or a personal data assistant with calendar/ email/ contacts just like the iphone does.My intention is to be able to sync my smartphone's data with my home server that actually carries my PIM applications. Basically, during the day when I am not home I will modify or add/remove data from the phone. When I arrive home I would like to be able to sync my changes to my server. My laptop will be reconfigured to retrieve and sync from that server.
Proudly running with Slackware on ALL my machines (gotta love Slack!), and Apple being **** by not supporting open source and linux environment, it seems that it will be difficult to have something working out of the box and will probably require jail-breaking the device, etc.. I don't want to rely on external services such as Google calendar except for the email from Gmail.

I've got Ubuntu One syncing a single 25MB folder on 4 computers. On one of these computers, the ubuntuone-syncdaemon process constantly pegs the CPU, using from 50-80% long after any sync-able files have been modified and successfully synced. The process is only using 8.9MB of RAM.
Specs:
Ubuntu 10.04 (lucid)
Kernel 2.6.32-24-generic
1000.8 MB RAM
Pentium 4 2.53GHz
Free disk space: 280.9 GB
System monitor shows 56.8% total RAM usage, 15.4% swap file usage.

Audio sync method. "Stretches/squeezes" the audio stream to match the timestamps, the parameter is the maximum samples per second by which the audio is changed. -async 1 is a special case where only the start of the audio stream is corrected without any later correction.Searching the net makes one believe that this command is just some sort of magic.People just put it in the line and it just works. Isn't that nice?
It says nothing about how to change the TIME the audio starts syncing. Like do I want it to start 5 seconds delayed? Or what about 5 seconds sooner? What if the audio gets more out of sync as the video goes on? Can I slip it a little at a time? What? No magic? No one mentions a file that already has badly synced audio. So what -async 1 really does is simply start the audio at the beginning of the file. LIKE AS IF THAT ISN'T STANDARD PROCEDURE?So what is the exact solution to syncing a messed up video? And why can't it just do the proper "timestamp" sync in the first place? No docs, no info and you are left out in the cold.

I have an F11 on an old box 686 athlon with an old nVidia Corporation NV5 [RIVA TNT2/TNT2 Pro] (rev 15) AGP. I am trying to do a network install upgrade to F13. I cannot get it to display the install menus from the network install disk. I get the initial screen with the install, basic video, repair, etc choices, but after I select the install/upgrade option, I see the CD drive read but the LCD monitor display never appears. The ready light on the monitor just keeps blinking and the display stays dark. Is there anyway of getting an error log to see what is going on?

I am using RHEL5 and I did a createrepo -v --update /var/www/html/yum/base/5Server/x86_64/rhel-x86_64-server-5/getPackage/ and the output was
Scanning old repo data
Indexed 10031 base nodes
Killed
Now is that a error? I didn't press Ctrl-C or anything like that, it just finished that way. I have a local yum repository and I use reposync to sync up my local repository with the Red Hat network. Everytime I pull down the updates from Red Hat I used createrepo with no options but wanted to try the --update to see how much time it would save. Anyone have any ideas why it is it was "Killed"

Does anyone know of a good tutorial for setting up single sign-on/login sync over a pure Linux network without any AD boxes in it? I have read this can be achieved through LDAP+Kerberos+PAM...I have these installed on a server...the users and groups on the server is configured to use them and a client has been pointed toward the LDAP server and has Kerberos enabled and users and Groups set to use the LDAP server as a backend.
I expected to see the users and groups list from the server show up on my client, or at least be able to login on the client as one such user. Am I misunderstanding what I read or am I just probably misconfiguring everything? My ultimate goal is for my clients to authenticate against my server and not have to sign in again when using server resources (Samba shares etc.).
I have read that NFS and NIS are old technologies that are going by the wayside and that Samba, LDAP authentication and such are overall better and more secure...What are everyone's thoughts on this? My network is just a home network so security isnt really a big problem...im just trying to set it up like a corporation with my limited resources would for the practice and education of doing it.

I use jpilot on opensuse 11.3 64bit to sync pim data with my Palm Treo 680 via bluetooth. This worked fine until today. Now I get the following error message when I try to sync: Syncing on device bt: Press the HotSync button now dlp_ReadSysInfo error Exiting with status YNC_ERROR_PI_CONNECT Finished.
The last successfull sync was on the 20th October and today is the 24th October. I did not change any settings in jpilot or on my palm device. So I guess there must have been an update of opensuse which causes this error. But I do not now how to look up the updates during this period or how to undo them. Was there an update between the 20th and the 24th Oktober, which might affect either jpilot or bluetooth functionality?

Paths displayed in Nautilus appear to be just that. Nautilus private syntax. Esp with respect to anything "special". Apparently when you hand a path like this to a program to open, you get a folder in your home directory: smb://cyberstorm/c_drive/
At least that is what my program does with it. A folder called smb: in my home directory. Probably because the default folder for the program is the home directory [~]. Is there a universal network folder syntax for the network and other "special" file systems?
I see things like: network:/// and computer:/// showing up in "properties" dialogs for some things. But these are useless to a program apparently.
At least a program written in Qt. Is this a Qt problem, or a problem with Ubuntu not yet making the network a first class citizen in the world of paths? Who do I complain to? Time for the network to be a first class citizen, right?

I'm probably missing something really simple here...
In Ubuntu, with Nautilus, there is an easy GUI method of making folder to be shared and visible over the network.
I can't seem to find the means of doing this in Xubuntu, either in Thunar or Gigolo.
I can use either of these to browse folders on other networked machines I have shared using Nautilus.
I had Nautilus for a while on my XFCE machine and used that to share some folders, but I removed it as it was conflicting with Thunar at times.

I'm attempting to write a simple BASH shell script to copy some files from one of my Ubuntu machines to another Ubuntu machine's shared folder. I've searched the forums but I haven't found anything on simply using cp across a network.Since Nautilus can do it I presume I should be able to do it from the terminal or from a BASH script -- this might be my first mistake?I have tried the obvious:
cp My_local_file //Name_of_other_ubuntu_computer/shareddocs
and
cp My_local_file smb://Name_of_other_ubuntu_computer/shareddocs
but those don't work. Sharing is enabled for the shareddocs folder.
I have tried mounting the remote shareddocs folder but it seems I need to install some other package to do this? If this is true, how does Nautilus manage to do it without an additional package?

I know this is a relatively simple problem but no matter what combination I try for my alias, I don't seem to be able to get it right! All I want to do is scp a file from my current folder to a location on the network:
Code:
scp filename username@computername:/folder1/folder2
This is the usual layout of the command that I use, so I thought that to save time, I would create an alias or even a function which did this for me, so all I had to type was
Code:
scp101 filename
and it would copy it to the set folder on the remote computer...
My attempt at an alias looks like:
Code:
alias scp101='scp !* username@computername:/folder1/folder2'
and I have also attempted a function:
Code:
scp101()
{
scp "$1" username@computername:/folder1/folder2
}
The alias tells me that filename is not a directory, which I assume means that I have some of the syntax wrong in the alias but I did a google search and I can't seem to find a decent example of what I'm trying to do. When I load up a terminal, I get an error message about the "(" of the scp101 function - so I've obviously can't get the syntax of that right either...
