OpenSUSE Network :: Setting Up Single Sign-on/login Sync?

Aug 2, 2010

Does anyone know of a good tutorial for setting up single sign-on/login sync over a pure Linux network without any AD boxes in it? I have read this can be achieved through LDAP+Kerberos+PAM...I have these installed on a server...the users and groups on the server is configured to use them and a client has been pointed toward the LDAP server and has Kerberos enabled and users and Groups set to use the LDAP server as a backend.

I expected to see the users and groups list from the server show up on my client, or at least be able to login on the client as one such user. Am I misunderstanding what I read or am I just probably misconfiguring everything? My ultimate goal is for my clients to authenticate against my server and not have to sign in again when using server resources (Samba shares etc.).

I have read that NFS and NIS are old technologies that are going by the wayside and that Samba, LDAP authentication and such are overall better and more secure...What are everyone's thoughts on this? My network is just a home network so security isnt really a big problem...im just trying to set it up like a corporation with my limited resources would for the practice and education of doing it.

OpenSUSE Network :: Xvnc, TightVNC And The Missing Pound () Sign?

Nov 17, 2010

I am running 11.3 with Remote Admin(VNC) turned on. This has installed TightVNC.I also have also enabled xinetd to manage the startup of new (incoming) VNC requests.All this is working just fine. So, what's the problem, you ask? Its that missing Shift+3 symbol. To reproduce, I run TightVNC (viewer) from a variety of clients (Win & OpenSUSE) to a number of OpenSUSE servers with xinetd managed VNC services enabled. The Xvnc sessions start and the clients display the KDE log-on screen. You will notice that in the username field that the sign is not displayed.

I have run a parallel VNC service (is it Xvnc or vncserver?) which gave me a twm session. It also is missing thesign, so I conclude that it is not KDE that is causing the problem?Secondly, a scan throughog file produced by the parallel VNC service shows:Code:KbdAddEvent: unknown KeySym 0x3a - allocating KeyCode 92 Has anyone any suggestions on how I can get my pound sign?

OpenSUSE Network :: Windows 7 And Windows LiveID Sign-In Assistant Working With SAMBA?

Dec 10, 2010

I have 3 computers. One running openSuse 11.3 with SAMBA and the other 2 are Windows 7 Professional boxes. I have the same user name and passwords for all three boxes.

From the Linux box I can access one of the Windows 7 boxes but the other won't accept my user name and password. The one that won't accept has Windows LiveID Sign-In Assistant installed. Apparantly that's an automatic install now.

I've read that there is a bug with the SAMBA libsmbclient [URL].

I tried updating via YAST but still end up with version 3.5.4-5.1.2 and this doesn't work.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Network Manager Stuck On 'setting Network Address' Then Continuously Prompts For Hex Or ASCII Key

May 28, 2011

When I attempt to connect to a wireless network, the network manager asks me for the network's password, then says 'setting network address' for 20 or so seconds, then asks me for some random Hex or ASCII key in the same type of window I put the password in (Secrets for Noel -- KDE Daemon). Since a key is already typed into the window, I press OK, which then causes the network manager to go back to 'setting network address', then the window pops up again and keeps repeating itself.

I'm running Opensuse 11.4 with KDE, and my driver is ath9k. I don't know much about linux so please don't tell me to 'recompile this' or 'change this setting' without explaining how to do it. Please help, I've been unable to connect to wireless in OpenSUSE for 2 weeks now.

OpenSUSE :: Sync Pim Data With Palm Treo 680 Via Bluetooth - Jpilot Sync Suddenly Broken

Oct 24, 2010

I use jpilot on opensuse 11.3 64bit to sync pim data with my Palm Treo 680 via bluetooth. This worked fine until today. Now I get the following error message when I try to sync: Syncing on device bt: Press the HotSync button now dlp_ReadSysInfo error Exiting with status YNC_ERROR_PI_CONNECT Finished.

The last successfull sync was on the 20th October and today is the 24th October. I did not change any settings in jpilot or on my palm device. So I guess there must have been an update of opensuse which causes this error. But I do not now how to look up the updates during this period or how to undo them. Was there an update between the 20th and the 24th Oktober, which might affect either jpilot or bluetooth functionality?

OpenSUSE :: Setting Of New Login Screen For Kde Dysfunctional?

Aug 9, 2011

yesterday I met a colleague on the floor, who told me that after looking at the jailhouse theme of Suse 11.4 (I guess that'sa kind of curtain? it really is remarkably ugly) he switched to Ubuntu. So well, I won't go that far, but now I thought, let'sswitch the login-screen for something better.Okay, I go to System Settings / System Administration / Login Screen, tab Theme.Alright, there are six themes there, but I don't like them. Great, there is "Get New Theme"!Okay, I get one. But the list of themes doesn't change --- I would have expected, that the newtheme would now be automatically included. So well, a bit stupid, but apparently it wants youto explicitly include it: so I click "Install new theme" --- unfortunately, then there is no hintwhere the themes have been stored! Okay, I download another one, hoping that during thatprocess I will be told what happens. Alas, there was a chance for such enlightenment with KDE3.

but likely no longer with KDE4 (which seems to go the Windows route, hiding everything; with thelittle difference that under Windows the basic things actually work). So no hint where it stores theselogin themes. Okay, I search the Internet, find various possibilities, /usr, /etc, and ~/.kde, ~/.kde4, butin none of them can I find these themes! (I found the desktop themes, and I found the six themes which were already there,but not the new themes).So could somebody tell my where KDE hides the newly downloaded themes?

By the way, the information under "Help" seems either irrelevant or outdated (the directories mentionedseem false anyway).In general, I think most(!) KDE problems would be solved if KDE would be more "verbose", enlighten the userabout its actions (while on the other hand, at least KDE4 seems to have the goal of "never say anything").Thanks for your attentionFrustrated Oliver(Since September 2010 I try to become friends with KDE4, where I was really satisfied with KDE3.

OpenSUSE Network :: Network Login Starter - Set Up A Server - Centralized Username And Password

Jan 21, 2010

I'm new to networks and servers, been using Linux on the desktop for a while now but always relied on the company's IT guy for setting up everyting LAN-based.

Now I want to build up my home LAN, and want to do it with Linux. I've managed to set up LAMP and file share servers.

What I am looking for is information on what I need, and how to set up a server for the following tasks:Centralized Username and Password, that when the user logs into any one of the desktops in the LAN, it uses this for authentication

Something that allows this authentication to be utilized in other servers (file access, web access, router logging, etc.). Something to make it easier for continuing permissions from one service to another. e.g. I have IPCop filtering content, and it has provisions for tracking who is making which request if there is authentication going on. (optionally) to run a script for mounting Samba shares or mapped network drives so from one system to the next. For example, in whatever box somebody logs in, it mounts a server share ("smb://Myserver/users/<username>") to a local folder ("my_user_share").

So;user "fred" ="smb://Myserver/users/fred" and user "wilma" = "smb://Myserver/users/wilma" but both would find their respective one mounted under "~/my_user_share". This would be irrespective of which box they are loggin in with. If the server share location changes (new server/servername), I change it on the server so the next time they log in it points to the right place.

I guess it is similar to Window's Active Directory, though I'm not sure what it's called, how to configure it and what it is and is not capable of doing.

OpenSUSE Network :: Setting Two IPs On One NIC?

Apr 21, 2010

I have a single NIC (eth0) and it has a single, static public address assigned to it. I would like to assign an additional private address (192.168.1.68) to the NIC to make accessing my router more convenient, but I'm having a little trouble. I'm not using the Network Settings module in YaST because whenever I've tried before it has usually resulted in my internet connection failing and being unable to remove the alias info I tried setting in YaST. So, instead, I'm just trying to do it by editing the configuration directly. I'm also using it as an opportunity to learn a little bit more about Linux. So far, all I've done is add an extra line to my /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth0 file. Originally the contents of the file were as follows.

Code:

BOOTPROTO='static'
BROADCAST=''
ETHTOOL_OPTIONS=''
IPADDR='XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX/21'

[code]....

Naturally, this didn't work either. Can anyone tell me how to specify the gateway for the additional local address?

On my laptop (HPDV7), using DHCP for network access, KDE4.

I use Network Manager to manage wired and wireless connectivity.

I also have Samba server running for connectivity to Windows machines.

My router runs DD-WRT.

How do I tell this HPDV7 system to propagate a Host Name up to the router?

In the DD-WRT status screen, I see Host Name as "*" associated with the assigned IP address.

I cannot, for example, ping my HPDV7 machine from my windows machine, I assume because the router (also providing DNS for my network) does not provide the name to address translation.

I CAN ping the IP address directly, and Samba connectivity from the Windows machine to HPDV7 works.

However, every time I run dhclient on the server/router, it appears my own DHCP server assigns an address to the internal network card despite the fact I specifically assigned it to be static using Yast. The situation resolves itself when I restart the network services with the command /etc/init.d/network restart. Otherwise no problem, but it also seems the internal network card gets a "new" IP from my server every time the external card requests one from the ISP. This is more of an issue.
