Is the new Ubuntu still running with Gnome as the desktop environment? I seem to remember hearing somewhere that it was something else - does that mean I could uninstall Gnome?
View 5 RepliesI installed Gnome desktop environment recently then ;I' ve lost KDE desktop effects settings. I just can see Compiz Configirator. I cant configure effects independently. There is same settings in gnome and kde. And also I cant change windows appearence.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a question about switching between desktop environments like kde and gnome. I'm using ubuntu 10.04 with gnome 2.x and with a really cool theme I found and mixed. I would like to check kde desktop because I kinda like the appearance of it. I have also cairo dock and compiz configured for my needs. my question is whether I can switch to kde desktop without losing my customized gnome environment if I decide to switch back to gnome? (I know that to switch session you need to log out but that's not the point) the next question is how can I install kde without losing the customized gnome theme I have ?( if the answer for the first question is negative)
the final question is whether I lose data when I switch desktop and if do than what specifically.

Its a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 and I want to be able to use gnome desktop environment and connect to it with NX Client from my windows 7.
I have done the basics..
update
upgrade
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
sudo apt-get install gnome-desktop-environment
I have done this installations a couple of times before and everytime it's been working for me.
I emailed their support about it as well.
They told me it should work by just doing these first steps, but since it didn't they asked to take a look at it. So they did.
I got this mail back from them:
It seemed that your server is missing some packages/services.
Therefore, I need to ask you first if you acknowledge the ability of being charged with the additional support fee of 37,25 Euro per 15 minutes support?
I will never pay more for 15 minutes of support then I payed for the server thats for sure..

I'm curious, I believe that one of the ways that OSX make the GUI experience of *nix more 'snappy' was to ditch X and run the window manager more directly on the hardware.
If I'm looking to run Linux on a desktop, and have no interest in sending Windows to other machines on the network, can I run KDE or Gnome with no 'X' to eliminate that ever-so-slight lag with the window manager experience.
I guess basically what I'm asking is is there an equivalent of quartz for Linux?
a server at work has been accessed through the desktop environment as root. I know this is a risk and since I have never done it before I was wondering if there are any files created by the desktop that could compromise the system and how could I clean it up.

I'm trying to configure subclipse with JAVAHL for ganymede. I have everything installed and the right version of the JAVAHL.
I have seen that a lot of people uses java.library.path in the eclipse.ini file to set it up or just write a script for launching eclipse.
I have read about the .gnomerc file but i couldn't find it or create one and make it work. I'm using a 9.04 ubuntu.. is there anyway to configure an environment variable for gnome? What i want is just click on the shotcut and have it working, not having to run a script or all that stuff.

So I guess the ssh session is trying to start an x session. Obviously I don't want another session but instead use the existing x session that the machine runs anyway (and on which Rhythmbox runs)
googling I found a similar bug for f12 but no solution or fix or anything...

An obvious newbie to linux, I was just wondering if I could change the default desktop environment that comes with distros: for example Ubuntu comes with GNOME. There is a way to change that to something like, for example, xfce or Openbox right? Or are these environments set for each distro?

View 2 Replies View RelatedLast night I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 and ran into some problems. I can only work in the desktop GUI in safe mode, the regular Desktop environment loads up rarely. Here is some hardware info:
Toshiba Satellite L25-S1217
Intel Celeron 1.6 GHz
RAM 874 MiB
Available disk space 47.5 GiB
Now, here is the dmesg output....notice the errors at the bottom (Idon't know what they mean, but I suspect that xwindows is having trouble mounting)
