Jan 23, 2011Tonight for the first time I tried to use Linux (Ubuntu). I installed it on to a small 100gb external HDD that I had just laying around. I thought I could do this without impacting my internal hard drive. I thought I could run Windows 7 normally when it wasn't plugged in and chose between Windows 7 or Ubuntu when it was. I installed it correctly (or atleast I thought). It worked fine but I then noticed I could only boot into Ubuntu or Windows 7 when it was plugged in. Having a laptop and going everywhere with it I could not tolerate it. When I tried to boot the system without the External HDD plugged in I would always get a "GRUB Rescue-No such Device" error and a white command line.
Confused I looked up how to uninstall Ubuntu, I got a windows recovery disc and deleted the partion off the External HDD. I then changed the BIOS settings so the CD would be booted first, well for whatever reason I get the same GRUB Error. It seems like I cannot boot into any CD Rom. Neither a recovery disc nor a Live CD. I got so frustrated I tried to system restore but it appears like the key command for that is also not working. I can't boot into anything and I'm stuck with the same Grub error. Im so confused and frustrated...I'm thinking about taking It to a pro and paying them to get it fixed or just calling it quits. I have no idea what I can do if Ibcan't boot from any CDs or any OSs.

Jul 9, 2010I have here two old identical compaq pc's with 64mb ram.I want to copy drive/os from one machine to other. So i do a drive to drive clone (witn both hd's deing connected to another machine). And it says its done and okay. But the second (cloned) machine doesnt boot. And have the black screen with the blinking white cursor in top left corner. I have already tried to do fdisk /mbr and also copying partition table from original to destination disk. Because i think it is logical that with a drive to drive clone it sould be copied. But i have a doubt in that somehow. Because why would it not boot if it was copied then

Jun 25, 2010i have Vista 64Bits Ultimate installed on an 1TB hard disk whit 3 partitons I have a 2nd 160GB HD in my system which i installed Ubuntu 10.4 on. All went ok, except after the installation finished and the system rebooted it booted straight into windows, whitout ever displaying GRUB. Now i found a way to boot either system, by using the bios and setting the applicable HD to 1st device. (or something similar)
Any way on how to solve this? keeping to have to enter the BIOS to select the HD and Thus OS i want to boot aint very practical. (im currently using ubuntu BTW)

Nov 20, 2010my Setup is Fedora 14 x64 + radeon hd 4830 i've downloaded .run package from ati site with latest driver for x64 systems. installed it, but didn't edited grub.conf becouse i didn't understood anything there (probably didn't spent enough time to get things understand) Now i've lost possibility to enter my Fedora system. during boot it lost it's modern blue boot screen (with filling drop), it was replaced by standard old boot screen with triple-color stripe. after this boot screen monitor start blinking going on and off. and on last step i'm getting "Fedora 14 boot bla bla bla something" on screen. nothing works except Ctrl+Alt+Delete. system reboots showing successful daemons shutting sequence. How can i edit grub menu from initial grub screen is it possible to it's own 'e' option or 'c' from grub command line?

Dec 3, 2010I am using Ubuntu 10.10, manually installed, on a Dell Studio 15 laptop, dual booting with Windows 7.While a few kids were playing nearby where I was working, one of the pillows they were playing with hit my laptop's screen and moved the screen's hinge backwards, applying pressure past where the hinge ends. This didn't seem to cause any physical harm to the computer, but I moved away from where they were playing, and in the process, shut the laptop, putting it into sleep mode. I opened the laptop and entered my password to unlock it. About half a second after entering my password and displaying the desktop and open windows, it brought up the password prompt again, as if I'd just opened my laptop up and removed it from standby, although I had not in fact touched it since I had entered my password a mere half second before. I thought that that was strange, and then attempted to continue my work. However, although the mouse worked fine, when I attempted to apply a keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+Alt+2, which runs a 2-finger scroll script and has to be run every time I take the computer out of standby), Ubuntu didn't register it (I didn't touch the keyboard otherwise, although I should have checked whether it worked all =).
I tried it again, and it still did not apply the script. Then I thought, "Oh, the pillow must have knocked something out of whack. I'll restart." When I restarted, grub loaded as usual, but the timeout ("loading the primary in Xs." sort of thing) that it usually displays did not display this time. I didn't notice it at the time; I selected Ubuntu, and it appeared to be loading it, removing the grub menu, but then hung. I waited 5 minutes for the computer to display the login screen, but it did not, so I restarted again, thinking that it might just be something stupid. It didn't work again, hanging again. I tried this with both the most recent linux kernel and the second most recent kernel, neither of which worked. But what was interesting is that Windows 7, which is also on the grub menu, loaded and displayed perfectly, as did GRUB Invaders, a game that can be loaded directly from grub.After this little escapade, I thought something was just wrong in grub.cfg, and it somehow wasn't mapping the Ubuntu menu entries to the appropriate OS and kernel. So I loaded up a live CD, and attempted to look at the linux entries. These are the menu entries 10_linux, 00_header, and 20_linux_xen.

Nov 29, 2009Although I managed fairly quickly to get 3D enabled on the GF 7600GS of my desktop, it took me longer to get 3D up on the GF 9650M GT of my Asus laptop M70Vn. Although I made extensive use of the numerous procedures outlined here, none of them worked and booting my laptop always ended up with me facing a jet-black screen and a completely inexpressive blinking white cursor. My solution was simple: I did not blacklist Nouveau and problems mysteriously disappeared.

Jan 1, 2010My Wubi installation of Ubuntu (version 9.10, I think) that I recently installed was working fine at one point, but now it isn['t. I select Ubuntu instead of Windows from the Windows boot loader, but instead of getting the usual menu of different linux versions (I think 2, as I updated it at same point), and Windows, I get the GRUB command prompt instead.I've looked at th2e Wubi Guide (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide), and I've followed the instructions for "How can I access my Wubi install and repair my install if it won't boot?", but that reveals no problems.For the record, I'm fairly new to linux and ubuntu, but I'm good with computers generally. The main operating system on my computer is Windows Vista, but I'm currently typing this from a Live CD of Ubuntu 9.10. The virtual disk (root.disk), is currently mounted as vdisk, as indicated in the Wubi Guide.
Ideally I would like to get Ubuntu to load as it used to (with a menu). However, if there is a way to boot from the GRUB command line that would be good too. I'm not at all familiar with GRUB, and the commands I've tried (boot and linux, I think), get errors saying no kernel specified, or loaded, or something like that.

Nov 7, 2010I am trying to run Ubuntu from a live USB, everything seems to be great until I get to the part where the GUI should come up. Then I get this screen. It's a little hard to see, but it's basically a white bar at the top and black underneath. The black is flickering a lot and the flickering can stay for a short while (30-120 seconds) even after I have rebooted into windows. Sometimes the bar at the top is another solid color (purple,blue, orange, usually white though), I think it is putting my monitor in a strange version of it's self test.
When it is unplugged the monitor while cycle through full screens of different colors. I have tried Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop AMD64, 10.10 i386, and the latest Fedora to see if another distro had different results. I have also tried 2 other USB drives. I am using Universal USB Installer 1.8.0.8 to make the drives. My own searches have found some problems with graphic drivers for the GeForce 8800 GTX, but they a bit dated. I have tried adding vga=vesa to the boot arguments, I am not sure if I did it right or not, but it resulted in a black screen with a blinking line instead and no flickering.

Debian Installation :: Blinking Cursor After GRUB
Apr 21, 2015I'm thinking about switching to Debian from Ubuntu, so I installed Debian (debian-7.8.0-amd64-DVD-1) in dual boot with my Ubuntu 14.10 (Uefi install). Installation process was OK (I think), I got a working GRUB that recognizes both OS, but Debian boots to a blank screen with a flashing cursor in the top left corner (Ubuntu boots perfectly). I also ran into some graphics-related problems while installing/booting Ubuntu, due to my AMD GPU graphics, that I solved adding the nomodeset option to the kernel in GRUB, but that no longer seems to do the trick here. Here's some info about my machine:

Fedora Installation :: Nothing But A Blinking Cursor After Grub?
Jun 18, 2009I installed F11 without issue but after rebooting all i got is a blinking cursor with no error messages or indeed any other form of feedback.
To check i was even getting as far as grub i went into rescue mode from the dvd and edited the grub.conf to remove the hiddenmenu option and set the timeout to something a little larger. This confirmed that grub does in fact seem to be loading fine. Selecting the Fedora entry still however leave me with just a blinking cursor.
Next i tried removing quiet from the boot commandline. same result.
Just in case i had the wrong disks configured in grub i tried swapping root(hd0,0) with every combination available with as expected various errors about either partition not being suitable or files not found.
Using grub to boot manually to a usb disk worked fine so grub does seem to work.
With no feedback at all i tried all the common options people suggest just in case the kernel is booting but not getting far enough to output to the screen. So far i tried noapic acpi=off nomodeset.
I tried installing 3 times so far with slightly different configurations just in case but still no luck.
Basic partition layout in case it helps:
/dev/sda <-- boot loader installed here.
/dev/sda1 /boot ext3 2GB
/dev/sda2 swap 4GB
/dev/sda3 / ext4 634GB
Various other disks are present but not part of the configuration. I double checked they are not mentioned anywhere in the common places like fstab.
Ubuntu Installation :: Blinking Cursor No Grub After 10.10
Oct 21, 2010I decided to swap my media center PC over to Kubuntu after I had some issues with the Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 update. It has had Ubuntu on it for probably 3 years now. Most notably, the same issue is occuring now with any installer later than 9.04 which leads me to believe it is all Grub2 related.
The install runs without errors, but after booting from HD I get only a blinking insertion cursor. No Grub at all. I've held in shift, nada. I booted to Live CD and reinstalled Grub manually but still no love. It acts as though Grub simply isn't there.
I do have a second hard drive in the box that has Ubuntu 9.04 on it that I use as a backup if the OS HD gets messed up, but it is second in boot order and shouldn't be causing an issue. Besides, if that HD was booting it would be giving me legacy grub, not a blinking cursor.

Oct 2, 2010When i open one of the web browsers i use and try to load a web site it's taking to long to respond and sometimes it doesnt load the website at all. I have tried with firefox,epiphany,opera with all the same results. I am sure that this is not a problem with my internet connection because i don't have these problems with windows.Also the network manager connection settings are correct
I also tried choosing the old kernel(2.6.32.24) to boot from but no success.The problem is the same as if i am using the 2.6.32.25 kernel. The strange thing is that i can download packages from synaptic with full speed. Last think.I have recently downloaded the recommended updates from the update manager but i don't remember what are the things that where updated.

May 1, 2010I have a single XP install on another partition, but can't boot to it now that I have upgraded to 10.04. Also, when starting Ubuntu, it takes a good 30 seconds to actually start booting ubuntu after I have selected it from the GRUB list (just sits there with a blinking cursor)

Ubuntu :: 11.04 - Doesn't Boot Up Stuck At Logo With Blinking Process Bar ?
Jun 23, 2011I have currently installed the ubuntu 11.04 natty narwhal edition through the wubi installer alongside windows 7. I wanted to just check out what the kde environment had to offer differently from the default desktop environment which is gnome unity environment.
I installed the kde environment using some sudo command given by google. After using kde environment for a few hours, I just began to feel, I liked the default gnome environment better (in classic mode) as compared to kde as I was more used to the former.
So I uninstalled kde with another sudo command which I got by googling. At the final step of the uninstallation, I admit I am not sure whether what I did was right or wrong. There was sth related to 'daemon' that popped up eventually and I chose yes for that and kde was uninstalled successfully or atleast that's what I thought.
But to my horror, when i tried rebooting my laptop to ubuntu gnome, the blue coloured kubuntu logo was popping once again and I had to go back to the synaptic package manager and delete sth called the 'plymouth' package to remove the kubuntu logo.
Now after doing all these, when I tried booting ubuntu, I was not able to get to the gnome login screen. The screen was just stuck with the ubuntu logo and the process bar blinking and gnome never started.
When I pressed the Esc key to check out what was happening from behind, I could see that some processes were being checked and there was a [ok] after everything and there was a [FAIL] next to "starting CPU interrupts balancing daemon". And the terminal screen ended with "stopping system V run level compatibility". I am not sure if this might be the root cause of blocking the boot-up. But I couldn't get a screenshot of those intermittent terminal screens as I was not in a position to type in any commands such as fbgrab which can be used to grab a screenshot of the terminal screen.
Eventually after intense googling, I figured how to manually configure gnome to start up. I pressed the Cnt + Alt +F1 as soon as the white ubuntu logo popped up and after logging in into my ubuntu account through the terminal interface, I typed in the following things:
And then voila I got the gnome login screen. I temporarily heaved a sigh of relief. (by the way I saw something flash quickly on the terminal moments before it went to the gnome login screen like "you need not init this way or sth"..I just couldn't catch sight of it properly as it flashed only for a few moments)
But I am not satisfied. Obviously there might be a way to set this problem right isn't it? Kindly someone pls throw some light on this issue. I want gdm to be automatically activated during boot. Its a big pain to manually configure it everytime I boot. Is it possible to do a windows restore to set the ubuntu right? But I saw in some forums mention that something called the boot.ini will botch up if we perform a system restore in win 7.
Method that does not involve uninstalling ubuntu and reinstalling it. This is because I have done a lot of tweaks, optimisations and installed lot of apps in it. I do not have a system image backup as well. So it will be a nightmare to do all these things over and over again. The mistake or rather the drawback from my side is I just have my laptop alone and do not have another standalone desktop to experiment with linux.
