Server :: DNS Not Working With Short Hostnames

Jul 20, 2010

I have changed some settings on my DNS / DHCP config under Debian Lenny, and now when i try to ping some box it only works with long names.

Ping borsti doesnt work (can not find host) but if i use ping borsti.borsti.iss it works. I have no idea why it doesnt work because i only modified the dnssec-key (created a new key) and nothing else in te config Here is the config i used for bind: (taken from named.conf.options and named.conf.local)

Ubuntu :: Password Is Too Short Error

Jun 27, 2011

I have been trying to change my password on this install to a simple 2 character alpha.

I tried using the "users and groups" menu and got the error "password is too short" that also tells me that I need more that 5 characters.
After searching for a bit I found the passwd <username> command to be used in the recovery mode. I got a similar massage there too.

upon doing a fresh install I am able to initially set a simple password to do what I want, but after changing to a more secure password I have not yet found a way to get back to where I want to be. I really don't want to burn this down do yet another install.

yes, I know the system is trying to protect me from myself but that is off the point.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Get Ncomputing To Work For A Short While With Intrepid?

Feb 24, 2010

I wanted to know anyone's experience with the new deb package ncomputing released for Intrepid. I've used their products and fought my way through to make them work. I was able to get ncomputing to work for a short while with intrepid, but upon installing the video drivers (and rebooting) the l230 hasn't been able to connect to any other host. (With Intrepid running). I've updated the firmware but the box still refuses to connect, for awhile it would say TS error (....). The system log only showed,

Date SystemName ncltsd [6198]: ERROR: NULL == video
[18043]: ERROR: SrvCli.CreateSession () failed! (3211426, 1869984)

Any help I can get would be much appreciated. If I forgot anything of I apologize, as you probably noticed it's my first time using the forum and I have only been using Ubuntu for a little less than a year.

Ubuntu Servers :: Server With Planned Short Uptime?

Jul 27, 2010

I've installed Ubuntu server on a small box with a couple of large hard drives to use as a remote backup server. Since my backups will run nightly in the wee hours, I'm configuring this to use Wake-on-LAN to start the server and run the backup. Once the backup completes - probably on the order of an hour later - another script shuts the server down. Once in a while I'll remote in to update packages and check on the status of the system, though I can check backup logs to insure that is still running.

Need I be concerned about the various cron jobs that periodically run to tidy things up? Should I periodically - say once/month - leave the system up for a full day to make sure that everything that needs to happen will run?

Ubuntu Networking :: Vpnc Freezes After Short Time?

Aug 11, 2010

I installed network-manager-vpnc, configured cisco vpn through NetworkManager. It works slow, but the bigger problem is that after minute or so the connection just freezes. Then I tried kvpnc. It works like it should from speed point of view. But it also hangs up after minute or two.Tried to change MTU of my wired connection to 1500 - no good.Tried to uncomment line in /etc/ppp/options "mru 542" - no good.

Created /var/run/vpnc because it was giving some error "can't open pidfile /var/run/vpnc/pid for writing".From logs everything seems fine except for "nm-dispatcher.action:Script '/etc/NetworkManager/dispatcher.d/01ifupdown' exited with error status 1." in last line. If I use kvpnc it gives no errors.SO, how do I debug this thing or does anyone knows something I don't in this case?

I then realised that the command hostname --long gives me the full name (as defined when doing the linux installation) while hostname --short gives me the name as displayed in terminal. My question is; what is the difference between these two? Are both valid?

Ubuntu Installation :: Installs Cut Short By Desktop Switching Off

Mar 6, 2011

So I have decided to switch to ubuntu since xp gave out on me. Everything seemed so easy during install untill it randomly shut off. It now does this during different stages of installation but never gets further than after entering my user details and beginning the install. Its not faulty hardware as boots into xp home ed fine. I want a full install of ubuntu only though.I have tried both 10.04 and 10.10 (32 bit) booting from Live CDs (3 diff copys, as was paranoid of probs with the iso download)

The hardwares largely unknown but easily ran xp media center previously a year or 2 before. I'm very confident its not underpowered for this.As you can probably tell I'm completely new to this and not overly technical. I have looked around and some things suggest a problem with graphics cards.

Slackware :: Short Downloadscript For Packages

Apr 28, 2011

I'm using a short script when I download the Slackware-(current) packages.

Since it works for me I want to share it. I've added a configurationfile, so anyone can adapt it to his/her requirements.

Note: I don't want to prevent anyone from buying the official DVD, but maybe you'll find it usefull to download the packages when performing a fresh install of current.

Advantage of the script is that one has less downloadsize and one can exclude package-series from downloading (in the conf-file).

Here is the configfile, it has to be saved as "getslack.conf" in the same directory as the script.

Code:

For the installation I use the bootable usb-image or create a minimal install-CD (CD1 without any packages) like here ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/slackwar...nux/README.TXT explained.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Banshee / Android Sync - Cutting Songs Short

Jun 7, 2011

Since upgrading to 11.04 I have come across an issue when syncing my music to my Motorola Defy mobile phone. I have a large collection of music, the vast majority of which is ripped from CD and stored in FLAC format. I use Banshee to sync some music onto my phone by dragging and dropping. Banshee converts FLAC on-the-fly to OGG prior to copying the file to my phone.

Since installing Ubuntu 11.04 any songs that i have since synced appear to be cut short. The files seem to be of about the correct size, when the music player starts playing the track it shows the correct total length of the song in the timeline bar but the songs get cut short, usually at 5 seconds into the song but a few seem to last about a minute before skipping to the next.

This morning I tried converting files using Sound Converter and setting the Music folder on my Defy's SD Card as the destination folder. The files all appear to be of the right size, show the correct track length but only play the first 4 or five seconds. I used my other computer, also running Ubuntu 11.04, to transfer a few files and these work just fine.
