Ubuntu Installation :: Mozilla And .mozilla-thunderbird Profiles When Upgrading To 10.04?

May 24, 2010

I have been doing periodic net-based dist upgrade since 7.10. Currently I use 9.10. Now that 10.04 is out, I want to upgrade to the latest LTS version by doing a clean install, instead of using net-based dist-upgrade.

Since I use Firefox, and Thunderbird, I want to keep the passwords/bookmarks I have stored in firefox, and mail/account settings (for multiple email accounts) that are in Thunderbird.

While I know I can copy the hidden profile directories for each, and back them up for recovery after the upgrade by copying them into the new 10.04 after install is complete, I don't know if this is recommended, prudent, or if pitfalls await me. Since I want to do a clean install, and, since 10.04 uses different versions of both Thunderbird and Firefox,

1. Would it be prudent to back up/use the existing profiles I have in 9.10, or should I bite the bullet and just start fresh with new profile setups when I finish installing 10.04? 2. Are there any pitfalls I need to be aware of if I will be restoring a profile of each from 9.10?

3. Or, should I continue to do net-based dist-upgrades to 10.04 so appropriate profile changes can be made by the new versions of Thunderbird/Firefox software?

Ubuntu :: How To Print Entire .chm File

Sep 10, 2010

Ubuntu 10.4

I have a few .chm files that I can view in xCHM or other chm file reader programs.

However, what I really want is to just print out every page of the .chm into one big .pdf file. Then I can read it a lot easier and it is much more portable for me.

Does anyone know any command line or tool that can output every page of a .chm file, formatted, in order, to a PDF or just the Printer?

If I do it through the GUI (right-click>permissions) it just changes back instantly. If I do it through the command line (even with sudo), it has no effect.

Ubuntu :: Limit Log File Sizes - Log Files Are Taking Up Entire Harddrive

Mar 15, 2010

I just recently reinstalled (clean) Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala last week. In that time, over 40GB of log files were created until the FileSystem was full. I then received a low disk space message and ran disk usage analyzer to find out that almost all of the 44GB I had free were taken up by the /var/log directory. I then preceded to delete the 5 largest files which freed up over 40 GB of space.

Basically I believe that I have two problems:

1.) The log files are logging too much information (40 GB in one week).

2.) I need a way to automatically limit the size of the log files. I have tried searching online for this solution and briefly came across logrotate but I don't believe that this will completely solve my problem as it only compresses and backs up older logs. I need something that will remove old log entries altogether. If logrotate is capable of this can someone please walk me through the process? I do not remember all five log files that were in question but they did include: messages, syslog, and daemon.log. I believe kern.log may have been involved too.

Ubuntu Security :: Rsync Automated Backups Of Entire File Structure Over Ssh?

May 16, 2011

I am in the process of writing an rsync script to run unattended backups of my entire file system to another system located on my local network using ssh and password-less rsa keys.

I will absolutely will not use password-less keys with the root account and this is the limitation preventing me from accomplishing my goal because root is required by rsync to access the / tree and copy it to another location. I decided that if I compiled the script into a binary that I didn't have a problem with the password being contained within the binary itself but from what I've read there is no way to elevate to root and then back down to user level from within the script/binary.

I can create the script as the user and use chroot to make it owned by root but retain execution permission for the user but it will still cause the ssh login to be under root and therefore require either that I am there to enter my password or the use of password-less keys under the root account which I reiterate I will NOT do. Currently the script is executed by the user on the machine containing the files to be backed up.

I've been on Google for a while now and I keep finding info on how to encrypt a specific folder or home directories but nothing on the entire file system (or I'm missing something big here). It's hard for me to imagine that it isn't. If so, do I need to encrypt the partition my file system is on before installing it? What software should I use? There seems to be so many, it's difficult to keep them all straight.

Software :: Redirect ALL Terminal Output To File And Screen (for Entire Session)?

Jul 6, 2010

Is there one command that will let me record an entire terminal session (with any possible errors) to a text file while also seeing all output on screen too? I know it can be done for individual commands, but I'm looking to do this for an entire session where the individual commands will be normal (i.e., not piped into tee, etc.). It would be even better if the command prompt is captured too. The obvious utility of this makes me think someone surely has come up with a solution long ago (probably in the 60's).(I'm sure it goes without saying, but subsequent output in that session should be appended to the file. The file should contain the full history, with all output and errors, of the session.)

After searching for a bit I found the passwd <username> command to be used in the recovery mode. I got a similar massage there too.

upon doing a fresh install I am able to initially set a simple password to do what I want, but after changing to a more secure password I have not yet found a way to get back to where I want to be. I really don't want to burn this down do yet another install.

yes, I know the system is trying to protect me from myself but that is off the point.
