Fedora :: Rebooted - Desktop Starts For A Very Short Time Then Disappears - YUM Does Not Work Neither Does Firefox
Apr 9, 2010I updated Fedora 9 yesterday. I rebooted earlier and now the desktop starts for a very short time then disappears followed by a window opening and closing for a few goes. After this nothing! YUM does not work, neither does Firefox! A bug report informed me there was a Python problem but I can find no reference to this anywhere.

Mar 6, 2011So I have decided to switch to ubuntu since xp gave out on me. Everything seemed so easy during install untill it randomly shut off. It now does this during different stages of installation but never gets further than after entering my user details and beginning the install. Its not faulty hardware as boots into xp home ed fine. I want a full install of ubuntu only though.I have tried both 10.04 and 10.10 (32 bit) booting from Live CDs (3 diff copys, as was paranoid of probs with the iso download)
The hardwares largely unknown but easily ran xp media center previously a year or 2 before. I'm very confident its not underpowered for this.As you can probably tell I'm completely new to this and not overly technical. I have looked around and some things suggest a problem with graphics cards.

Server IP : 192.168.0.254
Client IP : 192.168.0.1
While Running the program I am getting some printk messages on Server machine.
What is the meaning of following statement that I am getting from debug statements
( /var/log/messages )

Fedora Hardware :: F12 Boot Fails - Short Block Read
Jun 11, 2010My F12 installation, which was installed on an HP tx2500z laptop and has been operating relatively well since January, now fails to boot after a frozen screen precipitated a forced shutdown. On reboot, I was dropped into a shell with the error message "Error reading block 1546 (Attempt to read block from file system resulted in a short read) while getting next inode from scan." recommending to run fsck manually. During the fsck run, after a substantial number of Pass 1 inode count corrections, the "Error reading block" message reappeared, with the question "Ignore error<y>" to which I answered "y".
fsck responded with "Force rewrite<y>". Since I did not know what would be written here, I said "no". I then forced shutdown, rebooted into Windows, and searched for further guidance. One suggestion was to run fsck -y on the affected partition. My laptop drive has four partitions, the first two being allocated to Windows and an HP supplied repair partition. sda3 is a tiny boot partition (100 MB), and sda4/5 is the LVM remainder.
fsck -y /dev/sda3 told me the boot partition was fine.
fsck -y /dev/sda4 stopped immediately and asked "Could this be a zero-length file partition?". Given the ext3 structure, I suppose the correct answer is yes.
fsck -y /dev/sda5 told me fsck.LVM2_Member: not found.
Following this, I then attempted again to reboot, and ran fsck without options. Once again, during Pass 1, Block 1546 exhibited the short read error, again asking about a rewrite - which I once again answered no. Pass 1 completed with another substantial number of inode count corrections, and Pass 2 started - immediately generating the message:
'passwd' in /etc/pam.d (65556) has deleted/unused node 7831. Clear<y>
After some hesitancy, I said "yes", and of course a second similar message appeared. I was brave enough to answer "yes" six more times, with the first two referring to /etc/pam.d inodes, and the next four referring to /etc/security/console.apps inodes. The eighth message, also similar, referred to inodes elsewhere - but by now I did not dare to continue and forced shutdown. Is this repairable, and if so, how?

I'm not Cisco certified. What I think it does, in a non technical comparison, is tell the ISP hardware that your ip should be 190.189.48.52 or whatever number you like.
For the ISP this would be the last lease you used.
The ISP hardware does not recognize this last lease in its list, so it assigns a new ip.
That does the trick and you get your new ip!
My ISP promotes the service with dynamic ip so no legal matters here.
The problem is how to automatize it.
Sudo runs the script with no privileges problems.
I am able to run it password-less by modifying sudoers file via visudo command.

- Intel Core 2 Duo 1.86Ghz
- 4GB Ram
- 1TB Hard Disk
- 256MB Nvidia GeForce Graphics Card
I believe my system is quite fast, yet programs like JDownloader and Vuze (aka azureus) are very slow. More so on the GUI side, not so much program functionality (although I have not tested this either). If I scroll down a list of items, it takes ages, it lags and response time is quite bad.Also, I have two java processes running, each using 200MB of memory. I am assuming one is for Vuze and the other is for Jdownloader. It seems to me that Windows XP/Windows 7 ran java applications much faster and had less ram. I definitely see that with Vuze as it never went into the 200MB area when under windows.

Vuze seems to run perfectly fine and write to the /media/x directory.However JDownloader keeps saying "cannot write to location /media/x" or something like that. Only when i run it as sudo will it write to that location. So currently thats what I have done. But how do i make it so it runs without sudo and still can write to /media/x also, why is it that vuze has write permissions but jdownloader doesnt?

I tried using the "users and groups" menu and got the error "password is too short" that also tells me that I need more that 5 characters.
After searching for a bit I found the passwd <username> command to be used in the recovery mode. I got a similar massage there too.
upon doing a fresh install I am able to initially set a simple password to do what I want, but after changing to a more secure password I have not yet found a way to get back to where I want to be. I really don't want to burn this down do yet another install.

For example:
Ping borsti doesnt work (can not find host) but if i use ping borsti.borsti.iss it works. Apr 28, 2011I'm using a short script when I download the Slackware-(current) packages.
Since it works for me I want to share it. I've added a configurationfile, so anyone can adapt it to his/her requirements.
Note: I don't want to prevent anyone from buying the official DVD, but maybe you'll find it usefull to download the packages when performing a fresh install of current.
Advantage of the script is that one has less downloadsize and one can exclude package-series from downloading (in the conf-file).
Here is the configfile, it has to be saved as "getslack.conf" in the same directory as the script.

May 27, 2011I'm running Fedora 15 with Gnome 3. I installed Gnome-Do using 'yum install gnome-do'. I opened it from the Terminal by typing 'gnome-do' but I keep getting an error message that says
Could not load desktop item: libgnome-desktop-2.so.17
Gnome-Do opens but it doesn't display any application I search for and when I try opening the Gnome-Do preferences, it quits.
I installed gnome-desktop-2.32.0-8.fc16.i686.rpm from here: [url] and then installed Gnome-Do. Everything works fine now.
