Ubuntu :: Can't Use Excel Files With Open Office?
Dec 9, 2010
Can't use Excel files with Open Office. When trying to edit and fill out a RMA form using Excel file I keep getting a message saying: 'Protected cells can not be modified'.
Here's a screenshot. What do you have to do to get it to work with Ubuntu? Excel works fine with Windows but I can't use Excel on Ubuntu with Open Office. This is the first time ever using Excel with Ubuntu and Open Office.

We started upgrading our office package to office 2007. No problems right off the bat, but all of a sudden there are excel files stored on our linux file server that people store and share. Some of them you can open and some of them you can not open and it doesn't give a reason you can't open them it just says can't open file anyfile.xls..I attached a word doc with pic of error in excel.

I'm currently running Office Home and Student version on Ubuntu 9.04. I installed Wine 1.1.36 along with Winetricks, apparently office appears to be working well. However I do have one issue.
I'm trying to run an add-in on Microsoft office excel for a statistics class that I'm currently enrolled in,
I follow the instructions to select the appropriate add-in which is (Analysis Tool Pack) but keep getting an error message, please see below.
Microsoft office excel can't run this add-in. Microsoft office excel cannot install the necessary files due to windows installer error2. File not found.
Next message:
Microsoft office excel cannot access the file 'analys32.xll'.

How do you convert Open Office (ODT) documents to Text files?
I have made a report using libre office. Now I wish to continue editing the document using lyx (latex front end). So the ODT file needs to be saved as some .tex file.
I don't see an option to do this in File menu (export/save as). So is there any other plugin to do this?

I have written my own matlab script to output a cell array to csv format, but I am having problems when I try to view the file in openoffice. In my script, if the length of the string in the cell is longer than 30 characters long I put a linefeed into the fprintf. This all works great and the linefeed works in Open Office, however the width of the columns are still set to the width of the entire length of the string. For example, in my cell I will have several lines 30 chars long, say four lines or 120 chars, and the width of the cell that it is contained in matches the width of about 120 chars long rather than 30. This is a problem because it shows the text all left aligned in the cell, which looks great, but there are pages of white space to the right and the next column is off the screen. This seems obviously inconvenient. If the string is longer than 30 chars I output it in the following way:
" First 30 characters of the string the rest of the string and so on"
I feel like there should be a simple solution to this but I can't find it. Is this a problem with Open Office or my understanding of csv? Would excel have the same problem? How can I fix this?

I just found out about Libre Office. I am currently using Open Office on my Netbook (ubuntu 10.10), and NeoOffice on my Macbook (OS/X 10.6.7).
QUESTION: I have some backups using these formats: .sdw, and .odt. Can Libre Office read documents saved in these (StarOffice / Open Office) formats?
FWIW: I would have preferred to use OO on both machines, but unfortunately OO never fixed a problem with printing envelopes in the Macintosh version. Hence my use of NeoOffice.

I upgraded from Kubuntu 9.10 to 10.04. It was a fresh install of kubuntu, although I did leave a windows partition on there elsewhere. Grub messed up but I fixed that with a small text edit. Anyway, when I click on a file, i.e. Open Office writer or Calc, the computer thinks about it for like 60 seconds and then finally Open Office (version 3.2.0)finishes opening the file. It also does this while saving some files. It did not do this this version 9.10 which really amazes me. I have deleted OOo and reinstalled it several times and nothing helps. All other file handling seems normal, and it is a fast newer computer with a lot of memory.

I have both installed, but since LO is going to be the way Ubuntu goes for office applications, can I easily have my system setup for native LO? Native being if I double clock on a .doc file it will start up LO's Write program instead of OO.Will just removing OO achieve this or is there an easier way? I looked for file associations and didn't find it.

Sometime ago I realized my Open Office had changed, I don't remember having done anything in particular but today it isn't the regular open office but what I believe is a KDE version or idk. The theme changed and instead of regular menus I get "window" menus, in the sense that they get effects as regular windows. It's hard to explain it.

I tried uninstalling it and installing open office and also in the soft center open office is more than once, but I tried the different versions and I still get the same problem.

I've ran into something rather odd. I've installed wine and Office 2007. If I am to open a office 2003 (doc) or office 2007 (docx) file, it will open wine and office 2007 to edit the file. This is the desired behaviour. If I am to open an office 2003 (doc) file in firefox, openoffice will be opened. If I am to do the same with an office 2007 (docx) file, wine and office 2007 will open.where to start to get wine/office 2007 to open files from firefox?

I am not able to open excel file which is generated from java web application in Linux. The file is opening in Windows but not in Linux. I am not using Open Office. I have two different applications deployed in two different was7 servers in same Linux machine. Both the applications generate excel output stream which I open in IE. When I am trying the same application in Windows environment both are working fine, but in Linux I can open and download xls files in one application but not in other. I am using application/vnd-ms... as mime type and POI jars to generated excel, no errors in my debug log or system errors.

I'm having sporadic issues with the openoffice.org program. Sometimes, power point presentations will crash the program and then I can't open any open office programs without rebooting the computer. The problem seems to be just with powerpoint files and I'm not sure what the issue could be.

When I open an open office document from an NFS share it always opens as readonly. This was a problem I had on Arch linux and the fix was to change the locking options in the soffice script but I've tried that fix here and it doesn't work. I've seen a lot of discussions but they all go back to changing the locking options in soffice, has anyone got any alternative fixes or one that definitely works with locking?

My nephew dropped in today hoping I could print off some large Excel files. When I opened them in Office Spreadsheet I could see that each cell had a series of dots in it, similar to full stops (periods). These dots even occurred in cells that already contained text or numbers. Evenly spaced horizontally and vertically as if marking the corners of squares and regardless of the row height or column width. This wouldn't look good on a print out and being as he wanted them for a new job we booted up a Windows machine and took the printout from there. It turned out the page was intended to print to an A3 sheet whilst my available printers are all A4.
Later I reloaded these files into OpenOffice (3.2.0) because I was niggled about OpenOffice perhaps not achieving a decent performance against Excel, and printed off a couple of pages. The printout showed no sign of the dots, which is fine, but what about these dots that show up on the Spreadsheet page.
A bit more on this is that they show up in Preview in Web browser but not in Page preview. Any corrections on this admittedly trivial problem or do we just live with it?

I have been on the open office site, and tried several different downloads for Open Office 3.2. However, once I unpack the gzipped file, I get several deb packages from within the archive. Could someone kindly point me to a link where I can d/l a single deb package so I may easily install / (upgrade to)version 3.2? FWIW, I am using Karmic with the latest updates and OO ver. 3.1.1 on my netbook.

If Open Office had any problems saving in different file formats than the open format (which I know it doesn't have problems with) and rtf (which I know it does). I have to use it for school and I do not want to lose things like bullets, numbering and especially not information when saving in Microsoft Word formats.
