I have a problem with ssh, in that it's extremely slow when using putty to connect from Windows. A bit of googling suggested that I should use -u0 as a startup option since there's no DNS entry for this machine.
So, at the risk of sounding stupid, how do I put this options in to the /etc/init.d/ssh file? I tried adding it in the the "set" part but got an error, tried adding another "set" line and got an error and tried adding it to the first command there, but also got an error! Where does it go?
I have a dual boot machine; sometimes I want to use windows for something Linux won't do.
It boots up Linux by default, so if I want Windows, I need to interrupt it at the beginning.
It would be more convenient if I could tell it, when I shut down, what to reboot into.
When I boot up, Grub flashes a message along the lines of "vga=7xx is deprecated, use setting y instead,". Where would grub2 log this error, and what file would I have to edit to change from the old to new resolution setting?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed 11.2, and discovered when I went to setup my Logitech Marble Trackball, that there was no /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. After some Googleing, I created one using sax2, Edited it to add the appropriate parameters to enable scrolling using the ball, and all works great.
My question is if there is a more "correct" way to change the parameters, as the mouse parameters are obviously stored somewhere on the machine.

I have been trying to move away from Windows2000 on Ubuntu for months. I have a few applications that I run on Windows that I have been unable to find usuable equivalents on Ubuntu eg Outlook/Mobile sync application required for my job and a DVB TV card application for home. So it looks like I am stuck ruuning W2K and Linux for at least a while and indeed I have been using GRUB2 to select between W2K and Ubuntu.
I need some basic advice about setting up GRUB2. My philosphy when it comes to PC data is you can never have enough backups and I avoid any single point of failure. So I have always used two hard drives which I keep in sync almost daily with FreeFileSync. I also swap my most critical encrypted data between a laptop and desktop. Then I also alternate external USB drives stored away from my home.
My current partions are
When I installed on the Ubuntu 500GB I let it & GRUB2 take the default options so it boots from Hd1 and I assume certain executables are stored at the begining of the Ubuntu partition as well as configuration files in its file system.
Now I'm replacing the 500GB with a 1.5TB and the old 500Gb will become my backup drive. I want to keep the backup drive bootable in its onw right. If either hard drive fails I want a bootable system and acccess to my data.
So my plan is to use the following partitions.
I can install W2K on the 1.5Tb from scratch or use Acronis to restore an image file. Then I can install Ubuntu from scratch.
OK now for my questions.
1) Can I get GRUB2 to put its executables and configuration files on a small partition of its own? I see no reason why they should be dependant on a specific Ubuntu partition. I have read posts mentioning this but not sure if this has to be a bootable Linux or just a file system with the config files.
2) Can I run update-grub on any Linux and store or copy the config files to the partition in 1?
3) I will use BIOS to determine which hard drive is first to boot. When I run update-grub (or when it runs during the new Ubuntu install on Hd1) I dont want GRUB2 to do anything with Hd2, not even know Hd2 exists, it that an option?
I just started messing around with openSUSE 11.3 (64-bit version, KDE environment).
My desktop computer has an internal fax/modem card (PCI version, mod. USR5610C). I am very confident that this card works with Linux and U.S. Robotics guarantees that much on their web site.
I connect to the Internet via DSL but I am attempting to set up the internal analog modem card as a back up should the DSL line be temporarily down. I went to YaST -> Modem and I see that my card was detected as "U.S. ROBOTICS 56K FAX INT Modem Not configured". I pressed Edit and the Modem Parameters page says that the device is in "/dev/ttyS4". I am not sure that this is indeed where the modem is located (is there a way to make sure?) but I accepted it and proceeded to entering the name of my Internet service provider, the access phone number, user name, and password. So far, so good -- I think!
Eventually, I come to a window where YaST2 wants to install the following:
* jack Jack-Audio Connection Kit v. 1.9.5-2.8
* smpppd SuSE Meta PPP Daemon v. 1.60.46-1.1.1
So far I have not installed them because of the Jack-Audio Connection Kit software. Do I really need to install it in order to get the modem working? The reason I am being careful is that I just spent weeks and weeks in trying to get my audio card (ASUS Xonar DX 7.1, PCI-E) to work with openSUSE and I sure do not want to mess things up and start all over again!

my grub2 start-up has every kernel for ubuntu since 9.10 in the list. can i safely delete these older kernels without screwing something up? also, where do they live?

I have the following line for my kernel boot options in /etc/default/grub file.

I need the rootdelay option for the Kubuntu 10.10 kernel but the BT4 kernel does not need it. But looks like setting this has a global effect and it waits for 80 (seconds ?) even when starting the BT4 kernel which is not required.
So is there a way to give the rootdelay option only to the Kubuntu 10.10 kernel and not to the BT4 kernel.
I am looking to compile a kernel for my system which is a home built machine. This machine is stable and has not had any hardware changes in the past 2 years. I am trying to figure out exactly what modules and options to include in my custom kernel. Is there a way to see what modules are actually in use on my system and build a custom kernel based on that?

What options in my .config do I need to have enabled for Large File Support? I diff'd my current .config and Slackware's huge config, because I found out the huge kernel could handle ~3G files, but did not see anything that looked related to largefiles.

All can boot into linux, when I use uname -a to check, it has its name as above.
I have been reading for hours and just do not get how to do this simple task. I need to add a couple of kernel options to the 3rd menu item that shows in my grub.cfg list. I understand which files to edit (not grub.cfg) and run the updater.
If I look in /etc/default/grub I cannot figure out how to add a kernal parameter unless it is the default.
So basically I want to change the equivilent of this line below:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
But for a kernel menu item that is not the default.
i have just finish compiling a new kernel from source and would like to know how to load it in to grub2 i know grub the older version was easy to setup with the new kernels but i am not really in to grub2 to know how to load a new kernel to it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've had a fairly trouble free dual boot system for about 7 months now, windows vista / ubuntu 10.04 on separate drives. Got a little lazy and had quite a backlog of updates to do in ubuntu so I started up the update manager and let it do it's thing overnight. When I checked in it was waiting for a reboot to finish installing, which I did. When grub came up every selection returned the same error: file not found and must load kernel first, press any key to continue which leads back to the selection menu. Windows still works fine, and with a live cd I can see the the normal file system stuff is still there: filesystem, intrid.img , intridimg.old , vmlinuz , vmlinuz.old... etc.
Tried the live cd terminal to install grub.. grub-setup, grub-install, grub-probe all return the "/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for /boot/grub (is /dev mounted?)." line.
Anyway here is the boot info script results.

I'm just wondering what the options are if one wants to try a 'newer' kernel and/or XServer version.
Either on an installed system or virtual machine (for e.g., Squeeze in VirtualBox).
On an installed system, on Debian Sqeeze (or Testing), if one wants to upgrade to 2.6.36 kernel and/or XServer 1.9, what are the options? I noticed that 1.9 is available in experimental so one has to enable and load the experimental package repository?
As for the kernel, I guess there's a few options? One includes installing the liquorix kernel? Best choice/alternative is compiling?

I want to compile a kernel to add a few options that are not enabled in the huge-smp-2.6.29.6 that comes with slackware. specifically, i want to add TASK_DELAY_ACCT and TASK_IO_ACCOUNTING so that I can use iotop. I just want to add those 2 options to the new kernel, everything else I'd like to keep the way it is as the system has been running just fine. Will running 'make menuconfig' in /usr/src/linux default to the options that are used in the stock kernel?
View 3 Replies View RelatedSo I know I should have known better then to turn my updates back on after the 15 and 16 kernel updates crashed ubuntu and grub but I did anyway and once again after a new kernel gets installed I'm stuck at the grub sh prompt.
Been down the road before... tried using
linux /boot/vml....... root=/dev/sda1 loop=/ubuntu/disks/root.disk ro
When I use the 16 or 17 kernel I get an error stating "invalid imaginary number"...
So I use the 14 kernal and enter
initrd /boot/initrd.....
boot
And it boots like it did the last time this crashed. I went to the terminal and entered
sudo apt-get install grub 2
sudo update-grub2
And then rebooted like I did last time expecting the problem to be fixed and at least be able to boot up the 14-generic. It didn't fixed this time. So now what do I do to fix grub and what do I do about having 2 unbootable kernals??
On Grub legacy i used a menu entry to boot from a DVD since the bios on my pc doesn't recognize my DVD burner.... So before on the old grub i can just added this menu entry and it all worked...title DVDroot(hd0,0)kernel /boot/grub/memdisk.bininitrdboot/grub/sbootmgr.dskthen grub 2 came along and that all changed..on the 40_custom file i added this

I have not dug into Ubuntu for almost a year now (Since Jaunty, really). I am trying to come to grips with Grub2, but have just now encountered it in Lucid. I am having a terrible time with the graphics chipset, and it may well be that Ubuntu cannot be used on this computer (an older laptop with the dreaded Intel 82845G graphics chip). There are a number of older bug reports that it is unsupported, but some success in more recent versions.
Anyway, one suggestion has been to add i915.nomodset=1 to the kernel boot line. Now, this was a cinch in Legacy Grub, but I have been reading Grub2 wikis and tutorials for two days now, and I know about the config files, but I cannot find anything which tells me specifically how to add a parameter to the kernel boot line.
I have been running Ubuntu 10.04 for a while now without any issues. I have also been dual booting with grub2 for a while now, only issues being crappy customization. But anyways I had my grub2 splash all set up the way i liked, with a nice background and everything. I run every update Ubuntu wants and have never had an issue until recently.
On June 3rd I ran an update that Ubuntu requested, it installed a new kernel (-2.6.32-22) and requested a restart, as usual. after restarting, my grub splash is gone. I thought no biggie ill just run `update-grub` as i have before and it will fix everything...nope
I get the error message `head: cannot open `/boot/grub/video.lst' for reading: No such file or directory` right where the "image found" message is supposed to be.
How do you go about removing old kernel from other distros from the grub menu. For example I have lucid and ubuntu studio installed. Lucid controls the grub2. So how would I remove the old kernel out of the ubuntu studio?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've been using Ubuntu since 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon. I only recently fully switched to Linux OS's, and Ubuntu is now my primary. I currently have 9.10 installed. CURRENTLY I also have Backtrack 4, and Fedora 12 (Ugh!).Previously, I thought something was wrong with my my filesystem in Ubuntu 9.10, and after an upgrade of the linux kernel, I started to get Error: You need to load the Kernel First. That's where my problems started. I had upgraded to 9.10 from 9.04 and I still had Grub Legacy, so I went through hoops to try and get it to work, but eventually everything just kind of broke, and I completely wiped off my partitions on it and started fresh installs of all 3.
And now that the new linux kernel is released, 2.6.31-20 generic (I think... That's what the highest number on a file I can find in /boot is)I went through a few more hoops and ladders and tried to get it to work, but to no avail. I've looked the internet for a solution to this and tried just about everything but there is no unified answer, and I've seen on Launchpad there are alot of bugs that are classified as 'Fixed', but the problem still remains.I took out the 'quiet splash' part in the GRUB2 line for the newest kernel and it didn't do anything. It only changed it to "Error: Couldn't find file".This is the top two kernels (Main and Recovery for the new, and Main and Recovery for the previous working one)

I did a fresh 64-bit install of 10.04 workstation a few weeks ago, and my grub seems to "double up" the listings of my kernel versions. I have removed the older versions hanging around on my system, but you can see in the list below, that I still get the listings more than once:
