Ubuntu :: Set Up A Specific Folder On Box That Can Treat As Own Personal Dropbox?
Oct 3, 2010
how difficult it would be to set up a specific folder on my box that I can treat as my own personal dropbox. That way I can access the folder and whatever is inside of it by hitting my external IP, or domain, etc. It'd also be nice to upload to that specific folder on my box too. This is speaking from externally to the LAN.

I need to search a bunch of files in a specific folder for a specific number and add all the numbers together to a total sum. I use Rsync everyday, everytime I run rsync i get a logfile (rsync output) witch contains the textstring "Total bytes sent: xxxxxx".
The "xxxxx" can vary in lenght. I need to extract the "xxxxxx" from each file and add the numbers together to a total size over a week or a month. Is this possible? And I wish to only use bash. One way of doing stuff at a time my friends .

I just installed 9.10 on my laptop and selected the option for home folder encryption. I am running DropBox and placed the DropBox folder on my desktop (meaning it should be encrypted when I am logged out.) So I have two questions:
1) Shouldn't this setup cause my DropBox files on the server to be encrypted? Apparently they are not because they appear as unencrypted text using the DropBox Web interface.
2) If they were encrypted on the server (which doesn't appear to be the case right now), how would it be possible to share them with another client unless the encryption on both clients were set up identically?

I just did a clean install and started with the software installation. After I installed dropbox, a window popped up asking me for administrator's password....I put in my user password and it said wrong password (i just now remembered not adding myself to administrator's group while creating my user...ouch!) after which a notficiation came and went too fast for me to read it properly....it said something like unable to set user /etc/x something something.....I know it sounds completely vague but that is all I could before it disappeared.
Now, nautilus won't open unless I click on the dropbox icon below in the taskbar.I guess I can manage for a while but I'm hoping to find a solution to the problem.

I subscribe to DropBox and save all my important data in my /home/DropBox folder which, I presume, is living on my /home partition (/dev/sda3). I was hoping that I could create a new partition (/dev/sda4), 'move' my DropBox folder to this new partition so that when I use Clonezilla to make my back up images (/dev/sda1 & /dev/sda3) it would take much less time and space.

last week I decided to not just run dist-upgrade, but give the Lynx a completely fresh install. Before that I've only copied my home folder to an external hard-drive.
Now that I'm on Ubuntu 10.04 I have no clue how to import my old personal key and the passwords from the backup (my old home folder).

I'm dual booting windows and linux. My dropbox folder is currently installed via windows. On linux, can I just symlink my dropbox folder to the windows version or something to that effect? I know I can do it, but is there a way to do this and still have the daemon running and syncing correctly?

I keep all of my web design work under /var/www/(application_name). Nine times out ten, when I open a terminal, I'm heading to the www folder - cd /var/www. I would love to make that my "home" folder for the terminal, so it would just open there - I know if I ctrl+shift+t to open a new tab it defaults to the same dir, but it would be nice to have the first opened terminal default to there. Is this possible, or is there a better way to go about this?

I wanted to restrict users within a particular folder say /var/lib/tomcat/webapps. I want the users to see all subfolders inside webapps and work with it (edit+read but no delete). I understood that chroot is the way, and i read this [URL] community discussion, but what i understand out of it is, they are trying to give a complete working installation of ubuntu to the user within a directory which i dont want to.

This question can be found on the Internet and on this forum but either there is no response or the advice is to move the folder to exclude on another path (in case of using a subfolder for ripped/downloaded mp3).
But in my case my music is on a SAN and I access it through CIFS. So every time I delete a file or folder it goes to the Trash, in a folder called #recycle, which Rhythmbox indexes as well. So I have to delete this folder to avoid duplicates...
Is there any configuration in Rhythmbox to exclude a folder?
I only see a configuration for multiple folders in gconf-editor:
/apps/rhythmbox/library_locations

I am trying to use the command gzip to compress a directory or file list as argument and compress the file in a file named copia101225, within a directory named ZIPFILES. I want to make sure that if the arguments doesn't exist, the destination directory doesn't exist that it creates it. I keep failing at compressing the file to copia101225, that is within the directory named ZIPFILES This is what I have so far:
#! / bin / bash

What would be the best way to automatically copy all of the data off of a library of cds to a specific folder on the computer? I was thinking of running a bash script but I've run into a few snags figuring out the correct way to do it. Mainly due to the fact that the cd drive is mounted in a different folder in /media each time I insert a new diskAlso, the mounting and unmounting process causes it's own problems, but I think that could be covered by a for loop that checks /mtab every few seconds or so.

I want to delete all files within a specific folder without actually deleting the folder, what is a good bash command for this?. I found this one but encountered some errors even though I am executing it within the specific folder:
useratdebian:/home/user/folder# find . -type f -exec rm -rf {} ;
[1] 5052
useratdebian:/home/user/folder# find: missing argument to `-exec'
[1]+ Exit 1 find . -type f -exec rm -rf
The command as it appears is:
find . -type f -exec rm -rf {} ;
how to delete only the files contained within the folder called "folder" for example?

I am using secure delete to remove files from a Debian Linux PC. However, secure delete does not remove folders. This has lead me to look at writing a script that would move files to a predetermined folder for deletion. My plan is as follows:I have a folder on my desktop called shredder where I move the contents of the waste bin to. The script needs to identify all files within the folders and sub folders, within the shredder folder, and move each file to the shredder folder and then delete the folder. At this point secure delete can be used with a command like shred -v -u *.*on the shredder folder.The problem I have is in creating the code to move files from the different folders and then deleting the folders. Note that the names of the files, folders and subfolders will not always be known

I have a script that checks a folder for zip files than moves them to a different folder. I want to check every 5 maybe 10 seconds and since cron is setup to run at least a 1 minute increment I'm not sure how to do that time check as probably a loop within the script. One other thing is once the time check is in the script how would a cron job be setup to run this script? Once the script is running cron doesn't need to run it again, is there a feature to check if it's running and if it's not then run it?
find /export/xxxshare -name "*.zip" -exec mv {} /export/store ;

Many years ago, I converted a portion of my files to an arbitrary format with a specific extension. i no longer desire to have them in this format and i would like begin the process of replacing them because conversion is not an appropriate solution. unfortunately, they are mixed in separate folders of the same root folder with files in my current format of a different extension. I feel it would make this process easier if I were to move every folder that contained a file with the undesired format to a separate root folder. The files are stored on a Linux server and shared via samba. How can I do this with a couple of commands or a script? I am open to other suggestions as well. I want to avoid time spent editing text files. Ultimately, I'd like a command that produced a list of full paths for folders, sorted by the number of levels would be a nice touch. A list of all of the files is clearly not what I'm looking for.
