Jul 10, 2010

I know you can use grep to find keywords in filenames, but is there a variation that can enable you to search the content of the files themselves?

Fedora :: Configure Grep To Search Recursively Through All Files In A Directory?

Oct 1, 2010

somewhere lurking is a file containing the default print resolution, which is not being overwritten by printer settings or cups management. I've asked on the cup forum and nothing successful.

So here's the question:

How can I configure grep to search recursively through all files in a directory, or if need be starting from root to find the pattern "2880" I've looked in the man page for grep and I can't see how to do it, is grep the right tool to use for this ?

General :: Using Grep / Awk To Search For Colored Text

Sep 17, 2010

I have done a bunch of searches on this but the terms seem to get tangled in the more popular search of "colouring the output of grep / awk". I am trying to find a way to grep/awk through the output of a command to find text of a specific colour. The command's output has a range of colours signifying too many different things to specify using text, with colour being the only form of grouping.

General :: GREP - Search Special Characters

Feb 10, 2010

I need to search for the following pattern with GREP in a text file:

So I tried already:

But none of those works...I think probably because GREP doens't like the special character > in the middle of the serach pattern.

At the end I just need to now if GREP found the pattern in the file or not, so it should give me a 0 or a 1 back, once I check the value of the variable "?" after using the grep command.

Ubuntu :: Piping Command Output Into Grep As Search Term?

Nov 11, 2010

I want to pipe the output of a command into grep as the search TERM, rather than the text to be searched, like this for example

Code:

so that I only see the lines in auth.log for the current day...but obviously that line doesn't work.... is there a way to do this with grep, or even another command?

Ubuntu :: Unity Files And Folders Search Doesn't Show 'old' Files?

Jul 20, 2011

I have noticed that the files and folders search in Unity, only shows up those files which have been amended (or possibly just opened) since the install.

i was wondering if there was a way i could have the search index (or something vaguely equivalent) all the files on my machine. This is especially important given that i reinstall the OS every six months on a new distribution cycle, copying all my old files across.

Without being able to see my old files the search is pretty much reduced to a recent history search.

Ubuntu :: Copy Files/folders With GREP?

Jul 1, 2011

I'm attempting to find a particular word wherever it appears within a massive directory listing of teeny tiny text files -- and then copy all files containing this word into a "staging" directory.

Whenever I use the command below (on a test folder of smaller scale), it never carries the directory structure but attempts to copy all files within the "output" folder.

Code:
cp `grep -ir 'word' *` output

how to copy all these text files and have them retain some sort of directory structure?

Software :: Downloaded The 64 Bit Variation And Then Burnt It And Booted From It?

Jun 12, 2010

I decided to install Fedora today ( from Debian ) so I downloaded the 64 bit variation and then burnt it and booted from it. My partition table before looked like this ( the XXXs of values I do not know ) :

Code:
Number Start End Size Type File system Flags
1 1049kB 10.5GB 10.5GB primary fat32 diag
2 10.5GB 110GB 100GB primary ntfs
3 110GB 111GB 98.7MB primary ext2 boot
4 111GB 320GB 209GB extended
5 111GB 315GB XXXXXX logical ext3 XXXX
6 315GB 320GB 5124MB logical linux-swap(v1)

I wanted to seperate my /home and / (root) partitions in my new system so that in the future, distro-hopping would be easier. I deleted everything in my fifth partition except for my home folder, from which I moved my home folder ( /home/whales ) to the top layer of the partition ( now /whales ).

I then did a yum install gparted so I could shrink partition 5 (now going to be /home) and add another 20gb one for / (root). Unfortunately Gparted spat out an error about the kernel not reading the partition table until reboot ( but first it succeeded in shrinking the FS to 286GB ). I panicked and tried to format p5 to ext3 ( it was ext3 ) but then realised this was dumb before it could 'create the ext3 filesystem' and I cancelled the operation.

I then rebooted, realising I should have done what the error said to in the first place.Nope. The partition was 'empty' apart from lost+found ( which is empty ). Nuts I thought to myself. The filesystem must have been overwritten . I tried a 'rescue' on parted on the command line, but that did not work. So I then removed the parition reference and then tried a rescue, but nothing happened. No output other than progress, and now I am stuck with this layout:

General :: Get Files That Match ALL Patterns (using Grep)?

Jun 9, 2010

I want to traverse a directory and get a list of files that contain a set of patterns. I assumed I could use grep for this, but I having trouble getting grep to only return files that match ALL patterns. Here's what I've come up with so far:

Code:

grep --recursive --file=searchpatterns.txt --files-with-matches somedirectory/*

However, this gives me a list of files that match ANY of the patterns in the searchpatterns.txt file. I want to match ALL of the patterns. I've looked through the man page, but can't find anything that allows me to change the "OR" to "AND" for multiple patterns.

General :: Searching For PHP Files With Find And Grep

Nov 2, 2010

I am looking for all the files that contain the text string 'moo.sql'. I ran the following:

find . -name '*.php' | grep -lir 'moo.sql' *

Unfortunately it seems to return non-php files in addition to php files. I thought the find portion of this would filter the file names so grep would only search php files.
