Ubuntu :: Screen Blanks - Computer Still On ?

Jul 17, 2010

We have a computer, was windows, we installed ubuntu. It worked well for several months, but once in a while the screen would blank out. The computer was still on, the lights on the computer box are still on, but I can't get the screen to show anything. In the last couple of days, it now does this a couple of times a day. I have to hit the computer off switch, do a shut down, and reboot.

Any particular set of keys I can switch to get the screen to go back on? Like ctrl alt delete?

Also, how do I check the computer to see if there are any problems with the computer? There is system, system testing, does that check the hard drive, start up sequence, anything else? What else can I use to test the computer, system.

Ubuntu :: Screen Blanks After 10 Minutes?

Dec 14, 2010

Since upgrading to 11.04, my screen goes blank if I am not active for 10 mins. This is really annoying if I'm sat on the sofa watching a movie through the computer!

The screensaver is set to 1 hour and the power management settings are set to 'never'. I never had this problem with the previous Ubuntu version. I'm on a desktop rather than a laptop.

Ubuntu :: Occasional Flickering Screen And Blanks Connected To LCD TV

May 16, 2010

I just connected my LCD TV to my desktop and now I get two things happening which I didn't get when I used a proper monitor:

the screen scrolls down and sort of flickers every minute or so, plus: every few minutes it goes competely 'blank' i.e. reverts to the blue screen of my TV when there is no signal.

It should be in Ubuntu NOT Kubuntu!

Debian Multimedia :: Xscreensaver Blanks Screen While Watching Movies?

Jun 5, 2011

I'm using Debian Squeeze with Fluxbox and I'm having a problem with xscreensaver. I've set to blank screen after 10 minutos of inactivity, but the problem is that when I'm watching a movie, the screen is blanked after 10 minutes too. So I have to manually kill xscreensaver before starting to see a movie, or I have to move my mouse / press keyboard every 10 minutes to activate the screen again.

I've done some search before posting and I only found something about a SMPlayer's option named "Disable screensaver", but it is already on and it has no effect preventing xscreensaver to work. Here is a screen shoot of my SMPlayer configuration window:

[URL]

Apparently, xscreensaver isn't being able to recognize that another program is running. Could it be related to dbus?

PS: I had a dbus problem when I first upgraded to squeeze, my multimedia keys stoped working in banshee (whenever I clicked to play/pause/next etc, another banshee process was started), but I solved it by adding this line to my ~/.xinitrc: eval "$(dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session)"

Ubuntu :: Computer Won't Boot \ Opened The Screen But The Login Screen Wouldn't Appear?

Oct 1, 2010

I am using Ubuntu 10.04.1 and I run it 24 hours a day. Recently one morning I went to my laptop and opened the screen but the login screen wouldn't appear. Anytime the cursor appeared, HDD activity would go to 100%. I'm assuming this because the HDD light on my laptop was permanently on. So I made the dumb decision of just holding the power button down and turning it off. When I turned it back on, I noticed it came to a command prompt type screen listing "initramfs" at the bottom apparently wanting me to input a command. I did a lot of research and couldn't find much of anything that would help me. I read about GRUB, superblocks, fsck, e2fsck, etc.. . I tried all of those and nothing has worked so far. Any ideas? I did notice one thing. When I went into the actual install with the livecd, it told me the drive was /dev/sda5, but in Disk Utility on the livecd, it told me it was /dev/sda1

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Brasero Blanks DVD+RW Incorrectly

Jul 15, 2010

No problems with CD-RW, but DVD+RW are being blanked in an incorrect way. Ubuntu cannot recognize them at all after the blanking. I have to take the disks to another computer having Windows installed to blank them via Nero, and after that I they become OK for burning in Ubuntu via Brasero. I've got an old LG CD/DVD drive which was working fine in Windows. Who can recommend another program for CD/DVD burning for Ubuntu 10.04? (correctly blanking, certainly) I have installed the suggested updates for Brasero but of no avail.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Video Blanks Out In Totem - Slow In Vlc / Sort It?

May 23, 2010

I installed 10.04 in a Dell Dimension 3000 for my father. It's a nice upgrade from the old Pentium 3, except for graphics it seems. I tried playing a video I recorded on my phone. Movie player(totem) appears to play the video, but instead shows a blank screen. Moving the window, minimizing, ect. shows a frame or two, but that's it. Converting to OGG, and turning off compix does nothing. I installed VLC and now the video plays but in slow motion. Sound works great in both. I'm not sure if it's an Intel graphics thing or what, but it's pretty bad when ..... plays better then local video.

BTW not sure if it's related but it also seems to have a problem coming out of suspend.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Monitor Periodically Blanks Off And On?

May 24, 2010

I am running a nvidia gt220 video card and dual monitors. The acer monitor blanks out and in periodically. Quite often at times. I believe this is a driver problem. What I am wanting to do is roll back to an older driver. In the nvidia repository I only see the newest one listed and that is the one I am using.

I am thinking the 185 driver is what I have used before without any problems. Really not sure which one it was, but it was an older one. So the question is how can I get back to the older drivers so I can try and see which one it was.

Within 10 minutes of installation, I had begun to look around to change the window 'theme' settings. I was scrolling through the themes and BOOM the system blanks out and forces me back to the login. At first I was thinking it was no big deal, but as it turns out, it will not let me back it.Basically, I use my credentials, it appears to login, it goes to a black screen with the cursor at the top left and then sends me back to login like nothing happened.

General :: Fullscreen GLUT App Display Blanks After Approx 30 Minutes

Apr 6, 2010

I'm running a fullscreen display app which shows a 3D scene in OpenGL. The app runs continiously throughout the day unattended.

Here's the sequence of events in how it's loaded:

1) The computer is turned on, and boots into F11 (x86_64)

2) A non-privileged user is automatically logged on

3) The gnome startup applications list contains an entry for a loading script

4) The loading script waits for the network interface (eth0) to ccome up, then starts the display program

This all works just fine, except that about 30 minutes after the computer is turned on and the app starts running, the screen blanks out. Attaching a mouse to the system and moving it around a bit brings the screen back to life. Likewise, SSHing into the machine and killing / restarting the application works as well. Once either of these fixes has been performed, it runs flawlessly for the rest of the day.

I have turned off the screen saver, and set the power settings for monitor shutdown to 'never'.

Ubuntu :: Computer Will Not Go Past Motherboard Screen

Mar 30, 2010

I'm running a dual-boot with Win7 64-bit and ubuntu 9.10 64-bit. I installed Win7 quite a while ago and ubuntu was installed this last weekend. It's been running happily and until now I have been very impressed, in fact I've only booted win7 once after installing ubuntu and that was just to make sure it was still working after resizing the partition.

I'm now running ubuntu from my installation cd in "run ubuntu without making any changes". Because when I turn-on my computer it simply will not go past the "motherboard-screen", if you know what I mean. It's a HP so I had some kind of "pc doctor" or something in the motherboard-screen. I was able to run that and it passed everything; cpu, ram, HD... So it seem like the hard drive is fine. Any thing that can make my computer working or allow me to back-up my files.

Ubuntu :: Computer Locks Up And Then Goes Into Login Screen?

Aug 6, 2010

Recently, ive been having this problem with ubuntu in which while im watching a movie and thus not doing anything else, everything locks up except for the sound (if i attempt to move mouse doens't work) and then it goes into the login screen. Previously, ubuntu would fade away into the login screen.

So is there any way to prevent ubuntu from going to the login screen if the user is not moving the mouse? non-fading login screen?

edit: oh and i also have this sometimes occuring problem where i type my password to login, it logs in, and then it immediately goes back to login screen. A second login works. probably not relevant

Ubuntu Installation :: Black Screen After Restart The Computer?

Jun 25, 2010

Have tried putting cd in again but get nothing, on pressing restart the cd was politely ejected. Have tried rebooting a few times but get no response. Everything is switched on. So now I cannot even get a terminal up, the only thing I am fairly certain about is that the computer is sending a signal to the screen as there is Not a "no signal" message.

Ubuntu :: Computer Restarts Before Going To Grub Screen Continually

Basically, it gets past the Samsung branded screen but before it goes to the Grub screen, the computer will restart - it just continually gets to this point and restarts until I shut down with the power button. The problem is easily fixed by re-installing Grub using an ubuntu CD. Things will then run fine for about a week and the same problem will occur.

Now the problem I am getting is when I go to boot up Ubuntu to finish the install it loads on the purple screen with the Ubuntu logo then goes into a black screen with white letters. Its the screen that tells you to reboot and go into windows a run 'chkdsk /r' and reboot again, the problem is I have followed those directions 3 times and it didn't work, I don't think the operating system really knows what the problem is.
