During idle moments the last two evenings I thought I would try out Mahjong on my laptop. At first it worked ok then on the subsequent games it blanks my laptop screen after say 10mins and I have to reboot. I am using the updated Jessie. Is this a screen burnout?? My display in "settings" is showing unknown

I'm using Debian Squeeze with Fluxbox and I'm having a problem with xscreensaver. I've set to blank screen after 10 minutos of inactivity, but the problem is that when I'm watching a movie, the screen is blanked after 10 minutes too. So I have to manually kill xscreensaver before starting to see a movie, or I have to move my mouse / press keyboard every 10 minutes to activate the screen again.
I've done some search before posting and I only found something about a SMPlayer's option named "Disable screensaver", but it is already on and it has no effect preventing xscreensaver to work. Here is a screen shoot of my SMPlayer configuration window:

Apparently, xscreensaver isn't being able to recognize that another program is running. Could it be related to dbus?
PS: I had a dbus problem when I first upgraded to squeeze, my multimedia keys stoped working in banshee (whenever I clicked to play/pause/next etc, another banshee process was started), but I solved it by adding this line to my ~/.xinitrc: eval "$(dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session)"
We have a computer, was windows, we installed ubuntu. It worked well for several months, but once in a while the screen would blank out. The computer was still on, the lights on the computer box are still on, but I can't get the screen to show anything. In the last couple of days, it now does this a couple of times a day. I have to hit the computer off switch, do a shut down, and reboot.
Any particular set of keys I can switch to get the screen to go back on? Like ctrl alt delete?
Also, how do I check the computer to see if there are any problems with the computer? There is system, system testing, does that check the hard drive, start up sequence, anything else? What else can I use to test the computer, system.
Since upgrading to 11.04, my screen goes blank if I am not active for 10 mins. This is really annoying if I'm sat on the sofa watching a movie through the computer!
The screensaver is set to 1 hour and the power management settings are set to 'never'. I never had this problem with the previous Ubuntu version. I'm on a desktop rather than a laptop.
I just connected my LCD TV to my desktop and now I get two things happening which I didn't get when I used a proper monitor:
the screen scrolls down and sort of flickers every minute or so, plus: every few minutes it goes competely 'blank' i.e. reverts to the blue screen of my TV when there is no signal.
It should be in Ubuntu NOT Kubuntu!
When I start the Movie Player (Applications -> Sound and Video -> Movie Player), the screen blanks out and then restores again before playing the movie.
I don't see this issue with RhythmBox though. Only the Totem Movie Player seems to be experiencing this issue.
My debian squeeze + testing + unstable came with gdm3.
After setting in /etc/gdm3/daemon.conf:
AutomaticLoginEnable=true
AutomaticLogin=myname
I don't have to type in my username and password on startup. But after a few inactive minutes the screen blanks out, and I have to type in my password now in order to continue. For me hitting any key would be enough. How can I change that?
What I mean by black screen is that whenever I view a video or if there is video content anywhere on the page, my whole monitor goes black for around 3 seconds then plays the video content.
I am running Jessie 8.2 by the way.
After this morning's updates my Samsung SyncMaster 225BW monitor (1680x1050, 60 Hz) blanks every ten seconds. I've checked cables, even rebooted, logged into GNOME and Xfce and it continues.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been using Ubuntu 10.04 for about a month and generally the graphics work fine (I have a Radeon 2600 XT graphics card and have installed Catalyst Control Centre 10.7).3D games such as Nexuiz work fine and I can generally play different types of video but when I try to play HD video it gets pretty jerky. The same files play fine in windows so I'm guessing it's a software/driver issue. I've read various related posts to this and after typing 'top' into the terminal, I can see that playing the video takes most of the CPU processing resource up, which I as I understand, suggests that most of the work is not being offloaded to the GPU.

At the time I was playing solitaire (sad, I know!), while listening to a vinyl LP, the setup being turntable > preamp > line- in socket, and running JACK Audio Connection Kit. No other apps were running, but I had played several LP's before the lock-up occurred. I have 1GB of memory installed, but could it have become overloaded playing the LP's, and thereby caused the lock-up? I'm running 10.10

When i have a video running and i switch to another desktop or throw another window on top of it to do something real quick the player will turn gray and stop playing.
This is a problem for me because i like to have them playing in the background then link them from tmp to home so i can watch them later.
I recently acquired a copy of Penumbra: Overture. It installed just fine and everything. When I start a new game, I choose the "normal" difficulty, and it starts, just as expected. Only one problem: after the first cut scene, telling about the setting of the game and all, the screen just goes black and plays the sounds of the ocean (as it's supposed to) but the actual visuals never come up.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy system is Fedora 13 XFCE spin on DELL laptop Inspiron 1440 (1st column). Urban Terror was installed by Yum.
While playing, the screen suddenly freezes, nothing moves. The sound seem to work but very very slow (eg. the normal sound is A B C D ... now the sound becomes AAAAAAAAA BBBBBBB CCCCCCCCC DDDDDDDD .....................). The mouse don't response but the keyboard seem to response: I try press '~' key, then press 'q' and 'tab', finally 'enter', the sound stops, the mouse cursor appears (so I think I quitted UT) but the screen don't change (still game screen).
So I try "Ctrl + Alt + Backspace" to execute "xfce4-session-logout --halt" (this shortcut is set by me. Default there is not this shortcut. I try to set a shortcut to restart X server but find no way. So I set it to this command, this seem to log out rather than to restart the X server.). The screen become clear (black) and the log in screen mouse cursor appears (the mouse cursors on login screen and on desktop are different), but nothing more displays. As you know, on login screen there is a panel at the bottom with a button on the right. When we click this button, it shows a popup menu from that we can restart or shutdown. So I try to click on the bottom right of the screen on position of this button, then click on above it a little, the system shuts down (or restarts) with the splash screen (the blue screen with the Fedora logo) => the login screen still works but not displays
What is my problem, how can I fix it?

Ok so a brief description. The comp initially had an ATI Radeon X1600 card I removed because it was giving more trouble than it was worth. I'll add it later if there is a chance it might make things batter. (NB the computer was painfully slow with the card installed... runs faster without it)
I installed the restricted formats pakage as per the instructions found at: [URL]
So I installed the ubuntu-restricted-extras package and then ran:
sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
in the terminal.
Now here is what happens. The DVD plays as I can hear it but the screen is black. moving the screen i'll get glimpses of video but not much. This happens in MOvie PLayer and in VLC. However with VLC by moving it around and going full screen I manage to get the video component working as well.
With a default 11.4 (64bit) installation, and the one click installer for VLC at VideoLAN - VLC: Free streaming and multimedia solutions for all OS! - if you get a black screen when watching movie files there are 2 solutions.1)-> Go to Tools->Preferences->Video-> Remove the tick for "Accelerated video output (Overlay)"-> Try and play the movie again, you should now see output.2)Download proprietary drivers for your graphics card - I think theres a thread on the forum dedicated to that.
Example, NVIDIA 8600 using the default 11.4 open source drivers (nouveau?) shows a black screen when VLC uses "Accelerated video output".However, installing the proprietary NVIDIA drivers, VLC will successfully show the movie using "Accelerated video output".To clarify the default VLC installation with "Accelerated video output" ticked - works with proprietary NVIDIA drivers - and doesn't without.
After upgrading to 10.04LTS, I have this issue with ALL video players. Once the dvd begins to play, all I see is a white screen - no image. However, the sounds plays fine. What can I do to correct this?
Aside from this one issue, everything went fine in the upgrade process and I'm very happy with this new version.
When playing videos (mpeg,avi,mkv,wmv) with Smplayer all I get is a transparent screen. Other players work fine.

-Ubuntu 10.04 with MPlayer/Smplayer & VLC installed via the repos. -Installed the Ubuntu Restricted Extras package (everything except flash, extra fonts, & java) & w32codec packgae (medibuntu). -Computer in question is 800mhz Celeron, 256MB RAM & one of those basic Intel Integrated Graphics Chip. I'm having problems playing some video files. When trying to play these files with Smplayer, I get a blue screen but can still hear audio (default video output). After switching the video output to x11(slow), I can now see the picture but it's not playable (some video will show maybe one frame every 2 seconds, some video would play for half-a-second then just freeze). This happens mainly with large files (not 100% accurate, but in general files over 300MB).
Mplayer log gives the "Your system is too slow to play this file" & "Bad alloc:insufficient resources" messages. So I'm guessing this is not a codec problem, but a system resources problem? Is there any option, trick, tweaks, etc. I can use to play these problematic files or is it just not possible because of my system specifications? Is there a way I could tell mplayer to play these files with lower bitrates & resolution? Maybe this could reduce the resources needed to play?
I am facing a strange problem since few days.
My system Immediately crashes and reboots automatically whenever a video currently being played in minimal mode is switched to full screen mode "IN Any Media Player".

today while using 10.04 Lucid Lynx 64 bit I decided to do something about the low resolution boot screen, I've seen the bugs thread but I thought startup manager would be the way to go Anyway I changed the resolution and the bits to the highest they would go I rebooted and I got the normal coloured boot screen but no logo just text, then I tried disabling text and enabling the boot logo Then I rebooted and the same thing again Then I removed startup manager and the whole boot screen turned bright pink and still had a text logo!
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am running a nvidia gt220 video card and dual monitors. The acer monitor blanks out and in periodically. Quite often at times. I believe this is a driver problem. What I am wanting to do is roll back to an older driver. In the nvidia repository I only see the newest one listed and that is the one I am using.
I am thinking the 185 driver is what I have used before without any problems. Really not sure which one it was, but it was an older one. So the question is how can I get back to the older drivers so I can try and see which one it was.
No problems with CD-RW, but DVD+RW are being blanked in an incorrect way. Ubuntu cannot recognize them at all after the blanking. I have to take the disks to another computer having Windows installed to blank them via Nero, and after that I they become OK for burning in Ubuntu via Brasero. I've got an old LG CD/DVD drive which was working fine in Windows. Who can recommend another program for CD/DVD burning for Ubuntu 10.04? (correctly blanking, certainly) I have installed the suggested updates for Brasero but of no avail.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed 10.04 in a Dell Dimension 3000 for my father. It's a nice upgrade from the old Pentium 3, except for graphics it seems. I tried playing a video I recorded on my phone. Movie player(totem) appears to play the video, but instead shows a blank screen. Moving the window, minimizing, ect. shows a frame or two, but that's it. Converting to OGG, and turning off compix does nothing. I installed VLC and now the video plays but in slow motion. Sound works great in both. I'm not sure if it's an Intel graphics thing or what, but it's pretty bad when ..... plays better then local video.
BTW not sure if it's related but it also seems to have a problem coming out of suspend.
