General :: Run Same Command On Multiple Files With Same Extension?
Nov 10, 2010
how to run a command on all files with the same extension in a directory like this:
Code:
tex breqn.dtx; tex empheq.dtx; tex flexisym.dtx; tex mathstyle.dtx; tex mathtools.dtx; tex mhsetup.dtx; tex xfrac.dtx;
but in a simpler manner? I found this: Code: find . -type f -name *.dtx -exec tex {} ; but isn't there something simpler?

I have made the simple mistake of using dolphin to rename several picture files of types jpg and png. I have no problem viewing them and Ubuntu still knows which is which (if i view their properties it will state File Type: JPEG or PNG) but unfortunately Ubuntu Tweak does not allow you to chose them without the extension (I am trying to change my login background using this) So what i need is something that can scan several files, determine the file type, and add an appropriate extension to it. I have found several to do so for music files but none for images. I am using Ubuntu 11.04 at the moment.

When we view multiple files using less, how to go on to the next file? I gave these two commands:
Code:
[root@localhost log]# ls -lt boot.log*
-rw------- 1 root root 0 Apr 11 04:02 boot.log
-rw------- 1 root root 0 Apr 4 04:02 boot.log.1
-rw------- 1 root root 0 Apr 1 19:14 boot.log.2
-rw------- 1 root root 0 Mar 21 04:02 boot.log.3
-rw------- 1 root root 0 Mar 14 04:02 boot.log.4
[root@localhost log]# less boot.log*
This is what I got:
Code:
boot.log (file 1 of 5) (END) - Next: boot.log.1 <RETURN>
(END) - Next: boot.log.1
I could not view boot.log.2.

I have a program I use, rrdtool. I need to modify a ds value on every file at the same time. However, using a wildcard (*) to try this operation of all files does not work and instead only updates one file.
Here is the command syntax:
rrdtool tune <file> --maximum traffic_in:100000000000 && rrdtool tune <file> --maximum traffic_out:100000000000
So, how can I do this on every file in the directory?

How do you rename:
abc123.txt
abc124.txt
abc125.txt
to
abc.txt.123
abc.txt.124
abc.txt.125
Basically, I want to move the digits from the filename to after the extension.
It works for one file if I type:
rename 123.txt .txt.123 abc.txt.123
but I have thousands of files like these.

Suppose there is a directory named mydir containing ...
aaa.cpp
aaa.h
bbb.cpp
bbb.h
Makefile
a
b
Where a,b are executable files. What I want to is to only copy a and b to another location. Is it possible? (other than by manually issuing copy a,b another_dir).

I am trying to configure logrotate on APP/DB servers.As per my backup policy,logs will compress in daily basis and and will be moved to a Central storage device.
My tomcat generate several application logs with date extension as well as .log extension.For eg app.log,app.log.2010-10-23-14,catalina.out,catalina.2010-10-25.log etc.
Currently my tomcat logrotation /etc/logrote.d/
#cat /etc/logroate.d/tomcat/
/usr/local/tomcat/logs/*log {
[code]....
But its rotating logs only with .log extension..ie app.log.2010-10-23-14 (with date extension) is not rotating.If i put "*" instead of "*log",its rotating all files including rotated files. How can i rotate files which is having date extension.Also i dont want to keep rotated logs for more than 3 days.

I want to install Forms & Reports Developer Suite in Linux OS So I have downloaded Oracle Developer Suite 10g for Linux (Including Forms & Reports)
as_linux_x86_ids_101202_disk1.cpio
as_linux_x86_ids_101202_disk2.cpio
So in the Oracle Documentation Site they have given Guide as Follows:
To extract the cpio file,
move the cpio file to an empty directory,
then do:
cat filename.cpio | cpio -icd ....
but its not extracting.

I liked the idea of the "cosmos" screensaver/desktop, but wanted to add my own pictures to the application. I navigated to /usr/share/backgrounds/cosmos and tried to drag and drop. I quickly found that I did not have permission to do this.
I googled my problem and found some command line tutorials telling me to sudo cp. My problem is that I have about 30 pics that I want to move in there, and I don't think I can just move the directory, they have to be in that folder as the pictures themselves.
I don't really feel like typing the cp line multiple times with multiple randomly named image files.
Is there a way to have the command line cp all of my files from one directory to another?

I am to rename all the files within a directory (which contains multiple subdirectories) recursively without invalid characters.
I tried the coding posted above.
find . -type f -printf '%p
' | while read file; do
oldfile=$(basename "$file")
newfile=$(echo "$oldfile" | sed 's/[^A-Za-z0-9_.]/_/g')
if [ ! "$newfile" == "$oldfile" ]; then
echo mv "$file" "${file%$oldfile}$newfile"
code....
but I get an error on both of them stating "find: bad option -printf find: [-H | -L] path-list predicate-list"

I need little help. I want to find all files with extension "*.tar" "*.gz" and "*.zip" and move all those files into "/opt/old" directory. I've tried this command:
Quote:
find . -type f -name "*.tar" "*.gz" "*.zip" -print0 | xargs -0 -r mv /opt/test
It's not working, something wrong after "mv" i guess.

I'm pretty sure this is doable from the command line, but my CLI skills have degraded a lot since my pre-Y2K admin days. The goal is to search all the files in the directory for a very long string of text and replace it with another string of text. The text being searched for is my Google Adsense code (which will be stripped from my website) and it will be replaced with a placeholder so I can easily tack something else in there in the future.
Seeing how I have that long snip of code on about 100 pages, automating the process would make life easier.
If I was searching for a single word, I can see ways to do this.
If I paste the code I'm searching for into a text file, is there a way to:
find (contents of oldstring.txt) and replace with (contents of newstring.txt)?

I've seen a few tutorials that have commands and parameters on multiple line, like the one below:
Code:
chkconfig --levels 235 mysqld on
/etc/init.d/mysqld start
I can copy and paste this in Putty, but what if I want to manually type it? If I press return, the first line gets processed, so how do I insert a new line?

I have an older computer with Arch installed that I want to use to accomplish most of my daily tasks using the command-line (Mailgrab, IRSSI, mpg123, Elinks, Vi, etc). I realize that there are many lightweight WMs out there that support multiple monitors, but it'd be nice if I could just use Screen or something to that effect to distribute my windows across two or three displays.

I hope to add a wrapper script for the command with different parameters. For example, for any Unix command or script, like below:
command.sh -s p1 -o p2 -q p3
or
command.sh
Probably we could do as this way
cat wrapper
$1 $2 $3 $4 $5 $6 $7 | tee test.log
(assume it has 0 to 6 parameters)
and use it like
wrapper command.sh -s p1 -o p2 -q p3
wrapper command.sh
It is a little ugly to list all fixed parameter as above, do we have better code to handle various parameters?

How to submit multiple jobs onto a Linux server. The only way I know to submit and run a job on a server is using qsub, and verifying the status of the job using qstat. I usually run my scripts using qsub -cwd so that I can run it on my own directory (instead of having the results sent to a scratch folder).
1. However, assuming qsub/msub are not available, is there another way to do it? What commands can I use instead?
2. I know that some jobs can run in the background, is that an alternative? How do I do it? And would I still be able to check the status of the job or delete it?
