OpenSUSE Install :: Commands In Boot.local Have No Effect

Jan 29, 2010

I want to turn off CPU throttling, and I notice how each time opensuse boots up, it imposes it.

I would like to know where it does this. I suspect - but actually I don't really know - if it's the HAL daemon that does this. Could be.

In any case, rather than have to key it in each time, I put the relevant commands (cpufreq-set) in boot.local. No effect.

I suspect boot.local might not be the best place for such a heavy duty command like this one.

Are there any there places I could put it so that it executes automatically?

Red Hat / Fedora :: Restrict The User To Few Commands?

Apr 13, 2011

I am running RHEL release 4 (Nahant Update 6). I currently have a fax server that has been encountering issues recently after hours. My boss would like our helpdesk to monitor the status of these modems throughout their shift. This has led to a request for a helpdesk account to be created on our linux box that only has access to a few commands. Is there a way to limit the new user to only have access to the following commands?

cd
less
cat

Additionally I would like to create a script for them to run that would chmod our modems when necessary since their permissions reset after a power cycle. BUT not give them access to the chmod command, just chmod through that script for those specific devices.

General :: Setting Up User To Use Sudo For Specific Commands?

Jan 17, 2011

I did some digging on the sudo command and I do know the config file is /etc/sudoers Read the manual for sudoers and found out that I must use visudo to edit the file I read some of the examples at the bottom of the file and tried entering my own account in following the example. one of the commands I was trying to allow my account to perform without root login is the mount command So I tried adding this in (kreid8 /bin/mount ALL) I then saved & exited the file and logged out of root and tried sudo mount -t vfat /dev/sdc1 /media. I got an error saying I had to be root in order to do that But when I use the visudo -l option it shows that I have that privellege. Did I edit the file incorrectly?

I've gone through the guide on the ubuntu website, created a key, copied to through a pen drive, put it in her .ssh folder on my computer, but it still comes up with the error:

Code:
Agent admitted failure to sign using the key.

Is there a group I need to add her to, or add her public key to a different file somewhere?

CentOS 5 Server :: Login As Postgres User And Enter Commands?

Sep 10, 2010

I've had a server setup working perfectly for the last 2 years. Today we installed a newer version of postgresql and recompiled apache/php.

Postgresql will not start now.

"service postgresql start" = /var/lib/pgsql/data is missing. Use "service postgresql initdb" to initialize the cluster first. To initdb we need to be as user postgres.

"su - postgres" = "no file or directory"

In /etc/passwd = postgres:x:26:26:PostgreSQL Server:/var/lib/pgsql:/bin/bash

how i can login as postgres user and enter these commands?

So I extracted it in ~/.vim. Now, the issue is that, if I edit a file as root, I am able to use the commands; however, when I edit a file as a normal user, these commands won't work. So... could this be a permissions issue? Or should I copy the plugin in some other directory, maybe?

The service is running, netstat states the ports are open and listening.I can ssh to the box, and ran the usual commands to start the services. So my question is. Do I need to have a local user logged in before I can VNC, if so how can I do that via the command line.If this is not required for a local user to be logged in, what am I missing. Other than VNC, which other services do I need to start.

Ubuntu Servers :: Apache: Working Folders For Local User

Sep 23, 2010

I want to setup a folder (several really) for websites that use PHP.

I am running Linux Ubuntu with PHP, APACHE installed.

The Apache server works in Firefox as 127.0.1.1 no problem.

The default directory is (DocumentRoot) /var/www This is stored in a file called /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-default

PHP executes no problem, if it is in the default directory (/var/www).

However, I'd like to activate PHP in a folder on another hard-drive (also).

In that folder I'd like to store several websites, all which will use PHP and MYSQL.

The problem is, my boot drive where /var/www currently is located has only 2 gig of space (21 gig for operating system, which seems high).

PHP files in the other hard drive do not execute, even under APACHE server.

How can I safely change the PHP enabled folder? How can I add more folders, without erasing the current one?

Fedora :: Mail To Local User Bounces?

Shouldn't this command work "out-of-the-box"? mail -s test JJ

JJ is a valid local user, in fact, It's MY username. It doesn't work from root account either... However, from my login mail -s test root DOES work but mail -s test JJ from root does NOT.

My username is NOT in the /etc/aliases file. But I've tried jj: jj and that bombs. I also tried JJ: JJ and that bombs too. I ran newaliases after each edit too.

I've done some digging around (http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/, http://docs.fedoraproject.org/, http://fedoraproject.org, http://forums.fedoraforum.org ) and made some changes trying to get it to work, I either get a dead.letter or a /var/log/maillog entry (error)

General :: Obtain Local User Accounts Remotely?

Aug 17, 2010

I am trying to figure out a way to pull the user information from local users on a Linux server. I have approximately 40 servers running SUSE and Ubuntu that are using Microsoft Active Directory in order to authenticate. Our internal auditing group has made us disable root ssh ability, I was doing this with clusterssh, but I can login as me then su on the server to conduct root, admin, work. This is an ongoing request to get the local users and it is a painfully slow process since I have to login to each server to get the /etc/passwd file. Is there another way to get the local user information? They are now asking about seeing the last logon date or if the account is disabled, any thoughts there as well? Most of our auditors think Windows and I am trying to make my life easier but not sure what options I have. I need to get local accounts and if they are active or disabled plus last logon date. I'm sure there will be more but if I can get the basics adding more shouldn't be too difficult but I guess I'll cross that bride when I get there.
