Ubuntu :: Double Quotes And Single Quotes Not Working In 11.04?

Aug 2, 2011

I am not sure If anybody has faced this issue, my keyboard is less responsive when pressing the double quote/single quote key, I have to press it twice for it to print the quote( and that too it prints some other data and not exactly a double-quotes). Initially I thought it was issue with my keyboard, but later I see that it is working fine in Windows XP. It looks some kind of setting issue. If you check the below two examples, example a) is the double quote printed in Ubuntu, it doesnt exactly looks like a double-quotes and b) is the one printed in Windows.

Ubuntu :: Executing The Custom Startup Script?

Apr 17, 2010

I created a script, named mount_share.sh (in /etc/init.d), to mount the shared VirtBox dir at boot so I don't have to do it manually every time I load the VM. The script contains the following:

#!/bin/sh
sudo mount -t vboxsf -o uid=1000 osx_shared /home/rob/ubuntu_shared

I made it executable:

sudo chmod +x mount_share.sh

Then I assigned it to run at startup:

sudo update-rc.d mount_share.sh start 51 S .

I'm thinking it may be either:

1) A pathing problem to the ubuntu_shared dir but, if I run "ls -al" from inside /etc/init.d, it does find the ubunt_shared dir

2) Trying to run as sudo from inside the script. But, since all startup scripts run as the root user, I shouldn't even need the "sudo" in there which I have tried to no avail.

Programming :: Double Quotes Inside Double Quotes?

Jun 6, 2010

In bash I need to use some equivalent of double quotes inside double quotes (or the other way around.)I need to run the following statement to get the output of foo and store it in a variable while passing foo the $file which probably contains spaces.

Code:
variable=$(foo "$file")
The problem is that foo might return an empty string and if it does I need to catch it

Ubuntu :: Startup-Manager No Longer Shows No Of Kernels Option?

Dec 5, 2010

I've used the startup-manager on my old laptop, also running ubuntu, to control the number of kernel options shown in the grub menu, as per this how-to:-[URL]see the last screenshot on the page. I've got a new laptop and am trying to do the same, but on the advanced tab I no longer have this "Limit the number of kernels in the boot menu" option, all I have is "Bootloader menu resolution" and [Create rescue floppy]. Is this because I am now running 64 bit or has this changed in 10.10 (I probably haven't looked at that on my old laptop since before 10.04)?

Jan 11, 2011

I'd like to add custom startup commands (for example starting a process, registering to a registration server, downloading a configuration file) to the Linux startup process. Those commands should be triggered on startup only. What is the standard/appropriate way to do this?

EDIT: Is /etc/profile the right place to trigger such things?

EDIT2: I'm using Ubuntu.

Programming :: How To Run Program Remotely Using Custom Environment?

Jun 11, 2011

I am trying to to execute multiple programs on multiple remote machines. Each program needs to be run in a custom Environment that is not known at login time. Currently I am using ssh to connect and run the program.
My issue is that I'm not sure how setup all the Environment Variables that I need on the remote machine. I was able to write all the environment variables/values (NAME=VALUE) that I needed to a file and place on a shared file server (prog.environment). I thought the best way to approach this would be to write my own utility (custom.shell) that would interpret the environment file and then execute the desired command.

Ubuntu :: Splash Screen Startup - Goes Blank For A Minute Then Briefly Shows The Splash For 5-10 Seconds

Mar 26, 2011

I'm running 64 bit Ubuntu, and on the start-up after I pass the GRUB it goes blank for a minute then briefly shows the splash for 5-10 secs and then jumps to the login screen. Also the screen is offset by about 10-15 pixels but from the login screen onwards it is centred. (It's also like this for if I'm in recovery mode)
How do I fix this and Im wondering if it is a hardware problem?

I have a program I have made, and I would like it to run as soon as the system is finished booting. I am using Ubuntu Mini Remix to recreate a LiveCD/USB stick. After booting, it drops me to a command line where I can enter "sudo qct" and it will run my program (which is called qct, and it has to be run as root).I want this to be automated.Instead of going to a command line, I want it to run the program itself at that point. How would I go about doing this? I have read many tutorials about scripting but I cannot seem to get it to work.
