Ubuntu :: Create A Custom Live USB Startup ?
Apr 22, 2010
What I want to do is create a custom live USB startup of ubuntu.
I know how to create a usb startup from the iso (any ubuntu iso), with the usb startup disk tool.
Is it possible to add some software to it, for example suppose I want it to have exaile and wireshark (or any software) already installed.
How can I do that ?

I'm sure this is possible to do, but how do I create a Ubuntu install cd that uses my current config. Ideally I would like to be able to install exactly what I have on my system now, without user files. Wine, Ccsm, amarok, audacity, themes the whole nine yards. I tried using a program called Ubuntu Customization Kit, but it wouldnt let me mount the normal ubuntu install .iso file. This would avoid the hour and a half post-install config every time I screw Ubuntu up as well as stripping off many of the programs I don't need...

I'm working to setup an small PC as a kiosk, I was able to create an USB pen drive with ubuntu 10.10 with a persistent area and I made all the changes I need, everything works but if the PC loss power in most of the cases the file system is corrupted. Now I'm trying to generate a non persistent USB drive, but I'm having some problems. I was able to install remastersys and create an ISO image of my system (dist) but when I tried to create the USB drive using different Programs, in all cases I get the boot menu but it never complete the login, it just try to keep booting. The only messages I saw when I create the iso image is a bunch on chown operation fail from remastsys, I'm not sure if it is part of the problem. how to create an USB read only from a persistent one ?

I need aufs support/patch for kernel 2.6.34.1 as i i need to create a live linux distro for my organization and linux live scripts (the scripts which I am using for creating live linux distro) require aufs and squashfs support. There is a directive for squashfs in kernel configuration file but nothing for aufs and the patch available at linux-live site seems not to work.

I created a script, named mount_share.sh (in /etc/init.d), to mount the shared VirtBox dir at boot so I don't have to do it manually every time I load the VM. The script contains the following:
#!/bin/sh
sudo mount -t vboxsf -o uid=1000 osx_shared /home/rob/ubuntu_shared
I made it executable:
sudo chmod +x mount_share.sh
Then I assigned it to run at startup:
sudo update-rc.d mount_share.sh start 51 S .
I'm thinking it may be either:
1) A pathing problem to the ubuntu_shared dir but, if I run "ls -al" from inside /etc/init.d, it does find the ubunt_shared dir
2) Trying to run as sudo from inside the script. But, since all startup scripts run as the root user, I shouldn't even need the "sudo" in there which I have tried to no avail.

I am in the tasks section of the following tutorial [URL] I did the list package thing to see what packages there are. However now I cannot leave the list in order to run the purge command. How can I get back to the previous section so I can remove packages from the custom live cd. I want to make sure I am editing the live cd and not the current install. I am going to make two images. One cd that will still have a gui but I plan to build as a recovery tool. The other one is a dvd and will be for installing everything I want on any machine. I am doing the tutorial with Karmic. Also I have cursors, themes and icons I installed from gnome look. I then went to customize and created my own personal mix I like. I would like to make this a standalone theme and come as the default theme on the live cd and dvd. I have no clue what I am doing, however wish to learn to build my own custom live cd. Also I would like to know how to ad repositories to the live cd and how to add programs pre installed that are not usually included.

I am trying to make a Custom Ubuntu Live CD using Remastersys and an installer for the Live CD using Ubiquity. I was able to successfully create a Custom live CD using remastersys and when I boot from the custom Live CD the grub correctly displays the Custom Live CD Name that I specified during the ISO file creation using remastersys. However, when I install from the Live CD that I created, using Ubiquity, after reboot, the Grub menu displays as Ubuntu and not the Custom Label. How can I change it so that after installation, the custom Live CD name is displayed?

Now the problem is whenever I try to create live usb using Opensuse live ISO image after extracting all files to usb , it gets failed. The same thing is happening with OpenSolaris 11 live cd iso image. Does this mean that live usb creater I have, was only foe Fedora distros?

I am new to linux, but need to do the following:
1.) Use a basic ubuntu 9.04 distro
2.) On boot run an existing .sh script
I would like to make a thumbdrive with a live cd version that will auto run to desktop and execute the .sh script. I am looking for pointers on accomplishing this. I have found ways to get the live cd to run on USB, but it still involves clicking the "run without changing your system link" and I cannot figure out how to run the script on start up.

I want to create a LiveCD that you can boot and where instead of the normal Ubuntu installer (ubiquity) my own installer is starting.
I tried to do that with FAI, but I have many problems with it. Do you know a good way to do it? Is there an Interface for the Ubuntu installer/Source Code? Any other tools, ideas or thoughts?

I am new to XFCE and I'd like to ask few question about usage:
1. How can I disable dragging windows through workspaces? I like them to stay at one.
2. How do you configure startup applications?
3. Why XFCE menu doesn't show some of my custom icons? (png, tried more than one, for custom launcher - eclipse)
4. How do I add custom keyboard? (ALT+SHIFT switching)
5. I restarted laptop and all my applications re-opened after restart. I do not want that. How to disable this?

I'm building my own ubuntu variant for low resource systems at the moment. It's based from the ubuntu 10.10 minimal install (12mb iso). It uses openbox as the window manager and SLiM as the login/display manager.
What I would like two know is how to have a few config files that are on the live cd to be altered for the installed system. Specifically, SLiM autologin, but I'll probably find other things to change aswell. Basically a sort of "first boot script".

I'd like to add custom startup commands (for example starting a process, registering to a registration server, downloading a configuration file) to the Linux startup process. Those commands should be triggered on startup only. What is the standard/appropriate way to do this?
EDIT: Is /etc/profile the right place to trigger such things?
EDIT2: I'm using Ubuntu.

I'd like to create my own custom Debian live CD — the idea being to have my own rescue CD with my favorite Debian tools installed. I read about bootcd and was going to give that a try, after creating the ideal system in a qemu virtual machine.
How much exactly can you install on a system so that bootcd can still fit it on a CD? I'm presuming there is some kind of compression involved. When I tried to create my VM, I coudln't get Jessie + LXDE to install onto a 2GB virtual drive (net install) so naturally I'm wondering what I'm going to be able to put on a 700MB CD.

I need to build customs liveCd (usb) to run a distributed application that I'm developing. I have been using debian live-helper to build debian live cds, and it's very flexible, and works. But I'm looking for an alternative to it. I have heard about fedora livecd-creator. What do you think is a better tool?: livehelper or livecd-creator, maybe about good hardware recognition, easy to use, flexibility, reliability, etc. What others good tools are to do this job?

We have a project we are working on and wanted to know if it is possible using the ubuntu(or any linux) boot disk.
We need the disk to first wipe the hard disk in the notebook, then perform a hardware test(testing processor/hdd/ram/display) then it should reimage the machine and reboot from the HDD.
I am thinking of using grub4dos to boot(and timeout to the HDD)
and partition image to image the HDD... but i do not know any cli software for the others...
For note the disk has to be completely automated as we don't have the headcount to recheck every machine every few minutes.
