View 6 Replies View RelatedIm looking for kind of an applet for Ubuntu for switching between external and internal monitor of my netbook (Asus 1201n). Currently I can enter into NVIDIA X Server Settings and set up an external monitor without any problem, but this is kind of slow way of doing this comparing to the way I do it in Windows (pressing fn + f8 ) and I'm often when in my home plug-in into an external monitor. It looks like there is such an option in Jupiter (I'm using it for other function keys) but for my computer it always says that there is no external monitor detected (but function keys for switching are working ). Is there any other tool which could help me? It does not need to react on function keys, just choosing an option from tray would be enough for me. I'm new with linux and not so fancy about changing many things in text files, but when I had a good instructions how then I can do this.

After using Arch Linux for a while, I tried Ubuntu 11.04 again. Most of it was a pleasant surprise, except for the nvidia drivers. I currently have the nouveau drivers, but when I activate the nvidia drivers and reboot, it's installed but not in use. I figured I should run nvidia-xconfig (as suggested by nvidia-settings) but that makes my computer boot into a tty. Removing the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file makes it boot in nouveau again.
How do I install the Nvidia drivers? Ive tried the drivers from nvidia.com too, with the same results. I really want to be able to play my games, and nouveau just isnt going to cut it.
I have installed Lucid two weeks ago and I have a lot of problems to configure my video card Nvidia Geforce gtx260. Thanks to the help of ubuntu forums members I have correctly installed it and now I can use Compiz fusion and other amusements.
A particular problem is that as i choose Ubuntu from Grub menu the splash animation I've seen using the installation dvd ramdrive now doesn't start and i am directly addressed to the desktop username/password.
In your view could it depend on my video card? If yes what can i do to make the spash working (plymouth or others)?
I've created a custom Lucid installation using debootstrap, it works nice but have some problems, one of them is plymouth: it does not show the splash screen, when booting, I can only see a black screen, suddenly a green one and again black, when it is about to boot, some text messages appear and then the system starts. I'm only using X, no window manager, so I edited /etc/init/plymouth.conf and changed the start instruction from:

But it remains the same, Plymouth does not show the splash screen.
There are currently two options for nVidia drivers in Lucid Lynx, 173, and current. With the video card in my laptop, 9650m GT, the 173 drivers work but Docky is painfully, unusably slow. With the "current" drivers, Docky is fine but I get progressively worse and worse static-type lines across my screen and eventually it the machine restarts itself. I've tried installing drivers manually but they won't compile against the kernel.
Before installing Lucid, I had 9.04 Jaunty installed, and Docky (at the time still merged with gnome-do) worked without a hitch. I ran into this error first when I installed 9.10 and decided to go back to 9.04, hoping that it would be fixed. I can't remember which version of the nVidia drivers I was using in Jaunty, but is there any way to go back to those drivers in Lucid?
I just got a Xonar D1 (chipset CMI 8788 ).
It partially works but I got a couple of issues (using 10.04 x86-64). I use it with a Stereo headphones and a mic.
1) It only outputs in 7.1/5.1 mode and only on the left headphone. If I reselect 7.1/5.1 while an audio stream is playing then I get stereo back. I've checked with Ubuntu 10.10 live CD and apparently the left channel is mapped to front, while the right is mapped to sub-woofer. How can I fix this?
2) The mic doesn't work. When I select the Xonar D1, I can choose between Analog Input, Analog Line In and Analog Microphone. When I switch between those I can hear a click coming from my pc, as if something HW is switching. I tried playing around with alsamixer but it doesn't work. Any idea how to make the mic work?
I have installed it in multiple machines (servers, desktops, laptops)I have even installed 10.04 beta in several laptops for educational purposes without a single crash. But 10.04 crashes in laptop ASUS X50GL with processor Intel Core 2 Duo T5800.In fresh installation, it hangs always, in ANY 10.04 version, beta or stable, 32 or 64 bit, also from iso image in CD or in usb stick,I have tried all possibilities!Therefore, clever enough, I though let's do it in an indirect way: let's install the 8.04 distro (it works) and later on I will upgrade to 10.04. So I just did.Everything was fine (also the upgrade, without a single warning) until final reboot after upgrade to 10.04.hanged at boot!. There is incompatibility between 10.04 and this firmware, clearly. Unfortunately, 10.04 is not yet stable, I guess.I took a picture of the screen which I attach.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just installed Maverick on an Asus Seashell 1215T netbook with an AMD/ATI chipset. The sound output is working fine (with the exception that I have to manually set output to either speakers or headphones rather than just plugging in headphones), but neither the internal microphone nor external microphones plugged in through the mic jack work. I do have the sound device set to the internal sound (rather than HDMI) and the volume level set appropriately. Apparently neither microphone is being recognized. Any ideas on what could be wrong?Here is the relevant section from lspci -v:

Centos 5.2 Asus Eee box with Atom N270 and it came installed with "eLinux" which doesn't even come close to meeting my needs (low demand intranet server). But eLinux did work as far as I tested it.
First, CentOS seems to detect the Intel 945GME video chip but I end up with a blank screen. I used text mode to install CentOS. Then I searched for a solution. Found someone suggested also using the i915 driver with 945GM. That didn't work.
So, I reverted to a VESA driver. That worked except I couldn't get resolution greater than 800x600 even after I added a Mode line for 1024x768 to the xorg.conf file. However, the X interface wasn't that important. I mostly wanted into the utilities so I could fix the network.
I had tried a fixed address (192.168.1.11) since the box is supposed to be a "thin server." No luck. So, I tried DNS and tried activating again. The suggestion was that the network cable wasn't connected. When using DNS, the network hub lights flash. Something is happening.
Rebooted the computer using Puppy Linux (on a usb key). Video comes up in VESA mode. I can set it to 1024x768. It found the DNS server without any complaints. (Note: I didn't so much as touch the ethernet cable during the reboot).
Copying and Pasting isn't easy with a computer that won't connect to the LAN. But the hardware is a Realtek RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 2). I since tried Slackware 12.1 and it's pretty happy on that box. Vesa mode gets me 1024x768 and the ethernet works (however it thinks it's on eth1 which may or may not be a clue). I'll try CentOS on an old box for other testing.
How do I install the proprietary drivers for an ASUS 901?
Im running wine and stuff that ran at full settings on my damn windows 98 computer are slow as balls. So I checked into drivers and it says I dont have any proprietary drivers installed and it didnt see any.
My awn manager for the awn dock does not seem to want to open. I have tried to open it so I can configure my awn dock to work properly but it does not seem to want to co-operate. Should I uninstall and reinstall it or what?

My computer turns off and boots, it goes directly into Recovery Menu. It refuses to boot normally. I load low graphics mode, it doesn't even let me make changes to the configuration file, OR let me have ONE session in low graphics mode. I've tried reconfiguring xserver, re-installing nvidia drivers, STILL the same effing garbage. It's starting to **** me off. I'm mostly a Linux noob, and I hate trying all these "tips" that don't work to make my stupid display work. I use gnome. Any advice, tips whatever to make this work? If you need something, I'll try my best to get it but I'm on my other computer right now so displaying my configuration files will be a pain. :/ Before I installed vesa, low graphics mode wouldn't work because it said the vesa module didn't exist and it also said no screens.
on my old fx 5200 nvidia card, I installed the 173 driver and now when I log in to Default Ubuntu desktop with 3d enabled, like my screen will flash on and off like the panel and my awn dock turns white and then returns to desktop and repeats. You can only see the wallpaper and thats it. Useless! My desktop is virtually useless because I can't even use it. Gonna have to reinstall Ubuntu for the 5th time!

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed Maverick on my HP tx1000. Jockey offered me two drivers for my NVidia Go 6150. I tried the recommended one--and it seemed to be working. It had a green light next to it in Jockey, Compiz worked, etc. Then I rebooted.
Except it didn't reboot--the disk thrashed for a while, and then I was met with a black screen. I tried recovery mode and got a bash prompt...which crashed when I ran `startx'. Then I tried Failsafe X, which did work. After some experimentation, I realized it was the Nvidia driver at fault, so I tried the not-recommended one, which didn't work, and now I've disabled both of them. But isn't there a proper driver for me to use? IIRC, I was using a restricted one with Lucid, and it was working all right.
Fun fact: The day before I installed Maverick, Windows 7 randomly decided to not boot all the way. It would show the splash screen, and then hang with a black screen too. But it works in Safe Mode. And had been working fine for a while beforehand. There must be demons in my graphics card.

I installed F11 from the DVD iso. The nouveau driver seemed to work and I could get both monitors working with xrandr.
Then I tried to install the nvidia drivers. I installed akmod-nvidia.

I run Ubuntu 10.04 and everything worked fine until I downloaded bunch of games and programs using synaptic and it stopped working. When I try to install anything it tells me to check my internet connetction which i know works just fine, it says that cannot connect to [my_ip]:8080 and I manually opened the port and nothing, i disabled the firewall and have no proxy running, it also gives me the info that connection(111:refused) What do I do?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been having big problems getting 9.10 to work with a Geforce4 MX-4000 card. I know it is not a hardware problem because I've got a dual boot win xp/9.10 setup and the video card works very well under win xp. The monitor is a Samsung P2250. The issue is that the highest resolution available after installing the recommended nvidia 96 driver is 800x600, the same as that before the driver was installed. This is very frustrating because the monitor requires 1920x1080 I'm not sure whether the driver is at fault or the xorg.conf settings.
Should I try installing the nvidia site drivers? I've checked out several forum threads on xorg.conf settings but I'm really not sure how to go on this. What I need is an entry level guide to setting up xorg.conf. The manual here is not that user friendly.
I've installed the GNOME Update Manager (0.68-debian.7) from the official Debian package archive. However, after checking for new packages and clicking "Install the updates", the update manager asks for rights and then just checks for new updates again. Selecting different packages didn't help either, it just checks for updates again and doesn't update anything. Has anyone experienced the same problem

I have an nVidia GeForce 8400GS which I just installed in my Debian box and I can't get the HDMI audio to work. Kernel version is 2.6.32-5-amd64, nvidia driver version is 260.19.36, alsa version is 1.0.21. Output of lsmod shows that nvidia module is loaded. Output of aplay -l code...
I feel like I've looked everywhere on the internet for a solution to this and I just can't find one. It seems that everybody is able to see their nVidia audio device using aplay -l and then the solution goes from there.
I work with FC14 and a AXLE nVidia GeForce FX 5500 256 MB Graphic Card AGP 8x 256MB.

Update manager pops up telling me there are new updates, but clicking on the 'Install Updates' button does nothing.However, if I click on Settings, then just close the settings dialog,it then says 'Starting Update Manager' and when that finished, the 'Install Updates' will work, but I have to do this every time I restart the computer.
