Since installing 11.3 I've noticed that with certain Workspace themes the plasmmoids and panel have options missing: The theme in the screenshot is "Elegance" others have the same problem; "Oxyglass", "Heron" & "Aya". The panel has the resizing sliders missing. These were working ok in 11.2.

I would like to install a new icon theme without effecting my currently selected panel theme, as i think the Ambience panel theme looks really nice and unified but im not too keen on the Ubuntu-Mono icons. Is this easily possible, without going into my icon folders and replacing all the instances of one style for another? Are there any applications for gnome icon theming like OS X's Candybar?Im sure others must desire to change only the icons and perhaps it is really easy and this is why i couldnt dig anythin up on google, that or im a useless googler.

Since of late "Appearance preference" behaves awkwardly . Normaly It is supposed to show themes in /usr/share/themes right? but now it shows themes only in ~/.themes folder. I don't know what affected the change. how do I configure it as to show themes in /usr/share/themes/,?
Also whatever theme I use , Controls would stay same(Classic controls). They wouldn't be update to those of the Theme used.

After the recent upgrade to Lucid, my gnome session is working fine, but my kde session leaves much to be desired. Basically the plasma desktop is not showing up.
I am seeing plasma-desktop in synaptic unchecked and in the process of installing it.
Why was it removed in the first place and will it show up now?
Will report back after a reboot.

I had a bad surprise today as I tried to start my Kubuntu: plasma-desktop segfaults when I try to start a graphical session (and I get into a black screen with a mouse that I can move, and I do get a notification for new updates appearing at the top of the screen, but that's all)... I can still login to console, but startx won't solve the issue. That's quite a serious issue and I can't find a workaround for now.

I restored my .kde directory after changing some stuff unrelated to my clock and now all plasma clocks are exactly 5 hours faster than my system time (the correct time).I've set the time zone for Date&Time in System Settings properly and that's working well and I've ALSO gone into the time zone settings for the plasma widgets and switched between UTC and Local manually but that doesn't do anything.

I just upgraded to Natty Beta 2, and when I tried to login, I was told that /tmp/2145539930/.kde/share/config/kdedrc is not writable (along with tmp/2145539930/.kde/share/config/knotifyrc is not writable). When I run ls -l, I get
Quote:
-rw------- 1 kdm nogroup 39 2011-04-16 19:55 kdedrc
I can dismiss the dialog box, and after a few seconds of delay, see a crash report that kdeinit4 seg faulted. I dismiss this and log in to see plasma not running, but I can Alt+F2 any command I wish (except plasma-desktop, it doesn't run). I already purged kdm and reinstalled, and I'm trying plasma-desktop now.

Is there a way to add a KDE 4.6 Plasma session to Ubuntu Natty? Can this be done from Synaptic? If so what packages do I have to install.

After upgrading my husband's laptop to 11.04, KDE does not start automatically anymore. kdm (the log-in screen) appears. I select "KDE Plasma Desktop". But instead a kind of terminal appears in the top left corner. This console does not have window decoration. When I type startkde into it, KDE starts completely normally.
The same happens with a newly created user, so a misconfiguration in .kde cannot be the cause.
/usr/share/xsessions/kde-plasma.desktop is correct:
Code:
The metapackage kubuntu-desktop is installed.
I have tried reconfiguring and reinstalling various packages that I or others thought might be responsible:
Code:
GNOME was installed on the same computer, too, and caused some problems after the upgrade (instead of KDE being the default session, it was Unity, but no menus or control bars loaded). After trying all the things mentioned above, I uninstalled all GNOME/Unity-related packages to rule out they were causing the problem (according to that list: [url]). It did not help, even though for two packages messages appeared that sounded like they might make a difference:
Code:
I compared with
Code:
With my other two computers that work fine after the upgrade to 11.04, they also use startkde and kwin.

I recently made the final jump over to Linux and am using OpenSUSE 11.2 KDE 4 on my laptop while waiting for my companies to get new computers, which will probably be running Ubuntu.
So I've got OpenSUSE set up and running great, but twice in a row I've had strange crashes: Once last night and once today. It seems like my plasma desktop dies. This is what happens:
- Desktop 1 (my main working desktop) suddenly has a different background and I have no options to work with the plasma desktop stuff I usually have on it (I've got the Marble satellite picture of the world). Instead, all the icons look a lot more old-fashioned, like a friend of mine's GNOME desktop (not meant as a dig against GNOME, just an observation).
- The other desktops have a pure black background.
- My task bar and everything on it's gone - no clock, no programs, no kicker menu
- Alt+F1 doesn't do anything any more
- Ctrl+Alt+Delete doesn't do anything, to shut down I have to use the terminal
Things that do work:
- Alt+F2 to call up programs
- Switching between desktops with keyboard shortcuts (my pager's gone)
- Zooming out to see my desktops with Ctrl+F8
I've managed to identify the following factors that might contribute to the crash:
- Something similar happened when I shut down my computer while connected to an external monitor, but my desktop background wasn't gone and the plasma desktop functions were there, I just didn't want to bother putting together a new taskbar. The problem there (and this occurs consistently) was that, if I move my task bar to the external monitor and don't move it back before disconnecting from the monitor, SUSE leaves it there until I come back to the monitor again. THEN I can move my taskbar back. Workaround: I always leave my taskbar on my desktop screen. Maybe room for improvement in the next version? Like I said, though, this problem isn't entirely like the one I've got here.
- Both times I was making a system backup and saving it to an external hard drive. That seems to use a lot of system resources and that's when everything went wrong.
- This time I was working with OpenOffice Writer and suddenly my desktop, etc. was gone after viewing a second presentation in Impress. I was able to close down Impress, but Writer died when I tried to close and save. I still can't get the window closed, but it won't update either. I tried using Ctrl+Esc and that let me kill the process, but a couple minutes after that Ctrl+Esc stopped working too.
This time, the crash occured after calling up a presentation in Impress. Last time it was after connecting an external hard drive.

When i run the KDE 4.6.1 netbook plasma desktop, there's a icon in the right upper corner telling how many applications i've running. When I click it, the desktop zooms out and shows me the applications in a graphical way, wich is pretty nice....but...then i can not select an application to switch to and have to wait a certain time out to go back to the running program i had in the foreground allready.
When i change the settings of this icon to show it always in a menu, it does work allright (but is less nice)..

Upgrade of kubuntu to 11.04 from 10.10 using kpackagekit appeared okay, as did the reboot and login from the new panel. Then, instead of seeing my custom background and plasma desktop all I see is the color wash of the Unity background. There is a right button menu in this desktop with a Create Launcher option that allows me to make launchers for konsole, firefox, and ksystemlog. Windows come up, but with Unity window decorations. Sure enough unity-window-decorator is running, but there is no plasma. System logs don't reveal anything obvious that failed. There is a kdm process running and kdeinit4 appears to have tried to start klauncher and kde4, but they are not actually running. It seems like somehow GNOME and Unity have somehow collided with the KDE environment.

I am looking to turn off Plasma Workspace and keep it off! Today I was informed by a family member that their desktop had drastically changed. After investigating this, I had noticed that they were now running what was called Plasma Workspace. I am truly baffled right now as to how this was activated/turned on for only 1 out of 5 users on my computer. None of them are computer savvy, so it would also help me out considerably if I knew how this was turned on without the use of the terminal.

I've been experiencing a strange problem with Plasma locking up. Running system monitor it shows the KDE4 process using 20% CPU time, and Plasma around 10-15%. This seems way too much since on my six year old Laptop the cpu load of both processes is barely noticeable. My Laptop is an old single core 3000+ AMD Athlon 64, while my Desktop has a Quad core Xeon 2.33Ghz chip, so the fact that the KDE4/Plasma system load is many times higher than on the Laptop, indicates something is wrong.
I'm not sure what else to look for troubleshooting wise, any suggestions? *Actually, thinking about it, the KDE4 process is timing out one CPU core, which indicates to me something is really not right.

I've been fooling around with Gnome-Shell for a while now, which fits nicely on my small-screened (12") laptop, but the openSUSE 11.3 version has proven less-than-stable for me. Now I am interested in the Plasma Netbook Workspaces, which looks intriguing... The question is, [ 1 ] to install it (which I can do from Plasma Netbook Workspace - openSUSE, but the documentation is rather sparce), do I need to run MeeGo, or can I take a stock installation of openSUSE?
I don't have much luck installing openSUSE via DVD (or DVD image via USB) so I am thinking of installing via the KDE Live CD and then install the Plasma Netbook Workspace. This is basically how I installed Gnome-Shell (install from the Gnome Live CD, then install Gnome-Shell). Once it is installed, [ 2 ] how do I turn it on? Will it be an option in the login screen? I'll admit, though, I am more of a Gnome guy, but going to Gnome-Shell may be a half-step towards something like this.

I just installed OpenSUSE 11.3 last night and so far today I have had TWO Plasma crashes which leave the taskbar in a black color with stripes.
After the first one I located a post on the Web that said to do the following:
logout
Do CTRL-ALT-F1 (this does not work on my system at all, why?)
login
rm ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma*
CTRL-D to logout
CTRL-ALT-F7
Login
I did that and it did not fix the problem. I messed around with the desktop settings and somehow got the task bar back to gray.
Now during a copy of a large number of files from one disk to another with Dolphin, it crashed AGAIN.
So far 11.3 is proving a massive disappointment compared to the 11.0 I had on up to last night. Things are more complicated and clearly not as stable as KDE 3.5.x.
And I'm switching back to Konqueror as the default file manage because Dolphin appears to be unstable at doing a simple task like copying files without freezing.
I also hate the task notifier which during a copy pops up and covers my NoScript bar in Firefox.
do I have to switch to another distro? I really don't want to do that, but so far OpenSUSE 11.3 is a massive problem.
