I would like to backup a windows system that may have become corrupted however; but I don't know how to automatically span the files over multiple DVDs (which is what I'd like to do.) I may or may not use Ubuntu, but does anyone know any good applications for this?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI received a .sitx archive and cannot yet find a way to open the archive. Anyone successful at opening a .sitx? How did you do it? What did you use?
I have searched through [URL] without success. It is a guide to switching from Mac to Linux.
Every shortcut... every program... every link... everything opens in Archive Manager. And then it reports that the archive is not supported... I gotta launch everything directory related through a terminal just to get to navigate through a window manager.
View 2 Replies View Relatedsurprisingly come across this file that the ubuntu archive manager is simply unable to unpack.these are some articles that i am trying to download.strangely i have never heard of the format and the page asks me to download "stuffit expander" to allow me to view the pdf files.
however when i download the file saving it on the desktop, and try to open it, archive manager is simply unable to do so!this is the title of the downloaded file -
VOL13_NO3_4.sit
and its 1.3 MB
and i am as of now unable to open it in any way.
I downloaded a rar file but it's not working with Archive Manager says "Archive type is not supported"
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a dual boot system running FC8. I had a problem with an uninstaller on the Windows side that affected both the drives on the Windows and Linux sides. It froze my Linux archive drive. I removed the drive, and was able to boot the Windows side from a recovery disk, but not through Grub. I can't access Grub, but can start the Linux boot process with SuperGrub. The boot process gives the following errors:
No Volume groups found. Volume group "VolGroup00" not found. mount: could not find file system 'dev/root'.
Here [URL].. it says that you need to provide a block size to open an archive. What does that mean, and what would be a good number to use?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'd like to ask about archive mounter feature, can I mount zip file with read write mode? can gvfsd-archive do that?, or I must use fuse-zip to mount it? If I must use fuse-zip, how I wrap it so I can use it via nautilus or via gvfs-fuse-daemon

I've starting some research and I see there have been some folks out there have done this on a windows environment...i want to be able to get this going on a Linux environment. what I've found so far is there an open source multi touch project going on called tbeta...not sure if any of you are familiar with tbeta. Has anyone gotten tbeta to work on Ubuntu 10.04? If there are other multi-touch projects going on and working under Linux (hopefully Ubuntu 10.04)
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just switch to fedora from windows recently. And I love the terminal of fedora alot. The problem is when I run some command on the terminal, I need to wait for that command to finish before executing another command. This is very inconvinient, say If I open eclipse using the terminal, this eclipse program will hog to the terminal until I closed it. So if I want to use terminal again I have to open another one.Hence the question is: Is there any way open multi processes(command) using only one terminal?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have an ATI Radeon HD 3300 on-board video chipset, and an ATI Radeon HD 4350 PCI card. What I want is to have both displays available from one mouse/keyboard. I want to play media on one and have the other as my main desktop. The problem is that with Xinerama enabled, KDE desktop effects do not work (KDE says XComposite and XDamage are not available, even though I explicitly enabled them as extensions in the xorg.conf file), and performance is quite bad. Without Xinerama enabled, performance is great, desktop effects work great, but there's a lot of trouble with full-screen video, and the KWin window manager does not apply in the second display (although I can run a second instance of KWin on :0.1).
View 2 Replies View RelatedNow that Ubuntu 10.04 has multi-touch capabilities built-in, if I do not have a multi-touch screen or surface device, can I get 2 USB mice and get 2 pointers on the screen? One for the right hand and one for the left hand as I am ambidextrous, and would find it very convenient to have 2 mice.
View 4 Replies View RelatedAnyone successfully using VNC client on a Mac to control a Debian server?I have the vncserver setup on the Debian machine properly. But I'm having problems connecting to it from both a PowerMac running Tiger and a MacBookPro running leopard.I can connect no problem from a machine running Slack12.2, have not setup port forwarding on my router to connect remotely yet.My Debian machine is running the latest stable release of squeeze with KDE4.I originally tried this with RealVNC Enterprise for OSX but I'm not gonna buy it so I need another alternative after the 30 day trial ends as they have no free version for OSX.
The situation is that I do freelance graphic design on the PowerMac with Cinema4D and Photoshop so I spend most of my time on that machine which is located in my home studio in my attic. Aside from the MacBook and a Dell desktop(family machine)all my other machines and network hardware are in the basement. So to go from the attic to the basement everytime I need to do something on another machine is not practical, and the only other machine I need to access on a regular basis is the Debian box in the basement, this makes the most sense.
I also have a 14 year old living in the house and he's fascinated by all this and will meddle in anything he gets the chance to so all the Linux machines and network hardware need to be behind lock and key.
I am using a Dell Inspiron 14R laptop that came with Windows 7 Home Basic. The partitions of my hard disk before installing Fedora 15 were:
Dell (OEM Partition)
OS (C: ) (Primary Partition)
RECOVERY (Primary Partition)
New Volume (E: ) (Logical Drive)
I tried shrinking my C: drive (which has Windows) but couldn't do so hence performed the procedure on E: instead. I did this to create a 15GB unformatted space to install Fedora in. While installing Fedora, I chose the option "Use Free space" under Disk Partitioning Setup but the OS got installed in E: drive. Currently, I am able to use both Windows and Fedora under dual-boot but the problem I am facing is that when working with Windows, I am unable to see drive E: in Computer.
Windows Disk Manager is able to detect the partition and is showing it to be healthy (1st screenshot). Its name now is New Volume and neither am I able to change its path or letter (Error: incorrect parameters) nor am I able to check it using "chkdsk" (Error: cannot open volume for direct access/ GUI doesn't work as well) (2nd screenshot). On the other hand, I am able to access both the partitions in Fedora.
Another point to mention is that after finishing the installation of Fedora, when I started Windows, the Disk Manager as well as Dell DataSafe showed that the Windows Recovery drive had been formatted (maybe inappropriate terminology!) and was no longer retrievable. To rectify this problem, I restored my Windows to before Fedora was installed and I seem to have got the Recovery drive back (1st screenshot) (before doing this, it was nameless and empty).
I am new to the world of linux and when attempting to verify a tar archive I am displayed the following error. When running the command tar cvfW archivename.tar filename directoryname does not yield any errors.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIm running 64bit centos 5.6 and using virt-manager.On one of my guest OS's, Windows 7, The max Physical CPUs is 2, you can have unlimited CPU Cores however. (like my machine i use for work has 1, 4 core processor). The issue im having is xen only allows you to set the vcpu arguemnet in your xen config file. How can i set it so that 1 CPU has several Cores just as windows would recognize this machine if i were installing directly to the hardware vs via a VM.Ive searched for 2 days staright trying to address this issue, very little progress, Does anyone know where a XEN support forum is? all i get is the citrix xen support forums.
here is the best info i have found on this, but i dont know how to change this for my CPU to work, when i enter this in my xen config it essentially ignores it and just takes the value of vcpu= so windows shows 2 CPUs each with ONLY one core. Id like 1 or 2 CPUS showing Several cores. The physical Hardware is 2x Xeon 5300 Quad Core CPUs.

View 7 Replies View RelatedIs there a way to default volume to 100% in the terminal with gnome-volume-control-applet or any other program? I am setting up a dedicated Zsnes machine which boots into Fluxbox but the volume is muted by default. There isn't a man page for gnome-volume-control-applet.
When I log into Gnome the volume is set to 100%, but Fluxbox is always set to mute.
I've got my xubuntu 10.10 install just about perfect on a little acer aspire d250, apart from a small sound useability issue: In the interests of simplicity and resource usage I removed pulseaudio. After a bit of fiddling I got it so that my USB soundcard (ProDac) is recognized and automatically set as the default soundcard when plugged in. Any sound applications automatically use the USB sound if it present, no need to around with pulse. The only problem is that my netbook's volume control keys still only control the master volume of the inbuilt soundcard, and have no effect on the usb sound. Does anyone know of a way to change which sound device these keys actually effect? I'd like to write a little script so that when the usb device is detected the keys are remapped.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running Kubuntu 10.10 32 bit on an old DFI KT600AL motherboard based system using the onboard VIA 3058 AC97 audio (because it supports front panel audio connections and none of the add-in PCI soundcards I have do). I have an old Gateway/STB TVPCI TV tuner card (mainly wanted the FM radio part to work) hooked up to the cd audio connector on the motherboard because the digital audio over the pci bus apparently isn't supported for this card (neither is the onboard analog mixer on the tv tuner card, I had to hack a CD-ROM audio cable and solder it to the audio outputs of the tv tuner module on the TV tuner card). When I use the master channel as the master channel (selected in Kmix) then as one would expect it affects the output volume of all other audio playing on the system except that which is being handled by the PCM channel. On Windows the PCM channel was also affected by the "Volume Control" slider such that ALL volume levels were reduced when moving the slider. I'm hoping someone can help me figure out how to make it work like this on Kubuntu.
First off I should warn you that I (like many users of older hardware that is not properly supported under PulseAudio) have uninstalled PulseAudio (because it's garbage) and am using Alsa to manage my audio hardware. I would think that there would be some way to do this using the 'amixer' application to add the PCM channel as a component of the 'Master' channel so that when the volume is turned down using the 'Master' channel control it will affect the PCM channel too (at least the output to the speaker jack, not necessarily the capture or mix volume though), but I'm not really any good at doing things from a terminal window and the options for the amixer command kind of confused me.
I used Ubuntu 10.10 (64 bit) on IMac i7. As far as, I remember, after installing Pulse-Audio Equalizer, for each restart of the system, after login screen, system sets volume to maximum value. What can I do?
View 1 Replies View Relatedsince using 10.04 I have a big problem with my usb headset (freetalk everyman)
1. Problem: I cannot regulate the volume of the phones (output) anymore with gnome-volume-control. By default the volume is set to 100% which is way too loud. When I set it under 100% there is no sound at all. Values over 100% work.
2. Problem: The X server is freezing iregulary when I connect the headset and disconnect it, Magic SysRq works. I checked Xorg.0.log and found out that it recognizes the usb headset as keyboard:

I'm using 10.04 now and it runs ok, except one strange thing in the Volume control applet. Sometimes, when I click on the volume slider, it moves up. Even if I try to slide it down, it moves up on every click. The same when I click left of it - it keeps moving up! This is very annoying at night when the music gets loud and wakes everybody. It happens with or without Compiz turned on
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am struggling with a problem with the volume control... when i try to adjust the volume with the sliding bar i can not do it. If i put the scrollbar to the 0 position, it is muted. when i move it to anywhere else, i get the full volume. From other programs like vlc, i can adjust the volume with no problem.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy volume control seems to have only three settings: TOO LOUD, VERY QUIET, OFF. If I adjust the Master volume slider from the Panel, only about the right 1/8th has any effect and if I slide it past about the 95% mark, I get no sound at all. At the far-right end of the volume control, I get total volume. It's basically like the slider only has any impact in the top 5% of it's space. Below 95% of the slide, there is zero volume.
It's so drastic, that one tap down of the volume button on my keyboard kills the sound (because it nudges the slider past that 95% mark). This happens in the Audio settings, etc., system-wide. If I adjust the volume for an individual app from within the app (MPlayer, for example) it behaves exactly as expected (that is, app volume works smoothly, it's just master volume that has this issue). I have run through most of the "obvious" things-- I'm wondering if I broke something by installing the extra KDE packages to get Amarok to work.
In Intrepid Ibex, I was using the left Super key as Volume Down and the right Super key as Volume Up, because it was just so convenient.
However when I go to the "Keyboard Shortcuts" window in Karmic, it doesn't let me assign the Super keys to anything. I mean like, I can use the Super Keys along with other keys, but not by themselves.
Is it somehow possible to use the Super keys for Volume Up and Volume Down in Karmic?
It seems that when I adjust the volume with the volume wheel on the side of my notebook, the OS messes up. Nothing is clickable, I cannot type anything, in order to get a working computer again I have to hard reset it.Why is this happening? I have never experienced this. I have a Toshiba Satellite that I recently installed Ubuntu on.
