Ubuntu :: Need Edubuntu Disc Every Time Update?

Nov 23, 2010

Every time I update anything, I'm asked to insert my Edubuntu disc. I booted from the CD once and ran it in LiveCD mode. I'm pretty sure I've never installed anything from it. So why do I need to put it in all the time? I'm not even running Edubuntu. I looked at the software sources, and the only CD listed is the Ubuntu one, and it's unchecked anyway, so how do I make it stop wanting the Edubuntu CD?

Ubuntu Servers :: Every Time Logged In Via SSH Got A Message Telling There Where Packages To Update Including A Security Update?

Feb 11, 2011

I was running 10.04 LTS and had decided to stick to the LTS versions as I'm now running my machine as a server and don't want to be updating regularly.Every time I logged in via SSH I got a message telling me there where packages to update including a security update. So I did a search to find out how to perform an update on Ubuntu server from the command line. What I found was to do this:sudo apt-get updatesudo apt-get dist-upgradeAfter doing that I rebooted but now my machine gives me this message:

init: ureadahead-other main process (794) terminated with status 4Your disk drives are being checked for errors, this may take some timePress C to cancel all checks currently inprogressI'm not pressing C yet and leaving it alone to finish, but I noticed when the machine booted that one of the options for booting talked about Ubuntu 10.10, so I'm worried that I've updated from 10.04 LTS to 10.10 by accident?

this blew my mind today, because i've been using ubuntu for 2 and half years. Brasero 2.28.2 in Karmic does not have an option enable multisessions when burning disc or import a disc which has a multisession.

Seriously, wtf is going on? This is supposed to be Ubuntu's default CD authoring software.

Ubuntu :: Edubuntu Have Any Material For Toddlers?

Jul 26, 2010

I've never messed with it at all. My brother and his wife have a 2 year old and they wanted to get a computer both for their use and for some educational programs for their kid. They don't really have a budget at all but I happen to have an old computer sitting around that I'm going to give to them.

I've heard about the Edubuntu project, but all the stuff I can find says it's intended for ages 6 and up, which is a bit too advanced for a toddler. Does it have anything really basic that might be worthwhile for a 2 year old?

Ubuntu :: Can Different Desktops - Edubuntu - Run On One Kernel

Jun 6, 2011

On an old Acer Aspire 3610 notebook to be used by parent and children

I have installed a dual boot configuration with:-

What is the best way of adding Edubuntu desktop for children's use?

In one kernel can one user (parent) have Ubuntu 10.10 desktop and other users (children) have Edubuntu 10.10 desktop with parental controls?

i.e. can different desktops be configured to run for different users on one kernel?

Or is a triple boot installation necessary:

Vista, Ubuntu, Edubuntu?

I guess that I could reformat and use the partition /dev/sda4 for Edubuntu if necessary.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 - Can't Find Grub Without Disc / Boot From Hard Disc

Jan 1, 2011

I have just installed 11.3 x64. The installation went fine and worked for the first few hours. I ran the online update tool, and now it cannot find grub unless the installation disc is inserted and I select the "boot from hard disc" option.

I have read about the problem of the root partition being back, but not sure that's it.

sda1 - swap
sda2 - /
sda3 - /home

There used to be a repair tool in the installation disks. I could not find that in this media. Is that still available?

Ubuntu Installation :: Mouse At Login Edubuntu 10.04?

Oct 27, 2010

I have an IBM Thinkpad T30 that I have been triple booting, kubuntu, ubuntu and xubuntu, on sda1, sda2 and sda3, respectively. (The swap partition is sda6, sda5 is /home for kubuntu.) Everything was working fine until I decided I really wanted edubuntu on sda2 instead of ubuntu. I installed a clean edubuntu 10.04 onto sda2. At the log in screen, the mouse is completely dead. The mouse still works in kubuntu and xubuntu when I boot to one of those. The mouse worked when sda2 was ubuntu not edubuntu. Exactly the same hardware -- one laptop. So the problem is definitely edubuntu.[URL]..

Is there a config file or something I can populate with all the IP addresses so that it starts up with all of them already added? And while we are at it, the command to start up a computer on the network?

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing Edubuntu: Broken DVD-Drive - No USB-Boot

Apr 25, 2011

I would like to install Edubuntu 10.10 on this ancient Toshiba with Windows XP on it. The situation is a little complicated since I have no stable internet connection (I can not download Edubuntu once more). Now I realised that the DVD-Drive is broken and I can not boot from DVD to install Edubuntu. I have, however, an external USB-Drive, but there is no Boot-Option from USB (Phoenix Bios V. 1.3). So now I figured different options:

I could update my PhoenixBios to have a USB-Boot-Support. But I don't know if that's possible, so I am asking for opinions.I sucessfully installed Ubuntu 10.10 with Wubi on the Laptop, but I wasn't able to install the packages for Edubuntu. Any time I put the DVD in my external USB-Drive and tried to mount with Synaptic I got the error message: "E: Could not mount CD-Rom". So I could install Ubuntu 10.10 with the CD, the Edubuntu-packages in addition with the DVD afterwards. Is there no way to install Edubuntu directly with Wubi?

Ubuntu Installation :: Edubuntu 10.10 LiveCD - Checking Battery State - Can Not Mount

Apr 14, 2011

I am having a hard time installing Edubuntu 10.10 on a Toshiba L30

System specifications:
Toshiba L30-140
Intel Celeron M CPU 410 1,46 GHz
ATI Radeon XPress 200M Series
MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-841S
Bootable with CD/DVD only

While installing Edubuntu, I encounter two problems:

Can not mount...

I will reach to the screen to select to install Edubuntu and it will even show the green leds. I push F1 to get more detailed messages. After 2 minutes or so I will have this error message:

Code:

This error appears randomly. Out of ten attempts to boot, 6 times I will get this error message. 4 times I will get to...

Checking battery state ... [OK]

This will advance up to "Checking battery state... [OK]" which will freeze there with no DVD or HDD-Activity visible.

I encountered very many threads on the "checking battery state" issue, but they seemed obsolete to me, since most of them referred to Ibex. Also this is the Edubuntu LiveCD, it has not yet been installed on the HDD.

Nonetheless, for the Checking Battery State problem I have tried solutions for Ibex such as "acpi=force pci=noacpi" and "acpi=off". But it wouldn't work. Some people also suggested changing the graphic configurations, this is ATI however, not Nvidia and the BIOS does not offer the option to change it.

Strangely, the installation has worked brilliantly (with the same dvd) on another computer (some Laptop Toshiba L30), so I don't believe it might be a damaged disk.

MY question: When we run 'apt-get update' for first time after fresh install it downloads some files. Can i store those files & point to them for a networkless computer which has no internet ? If this is possible it will allow me to 'apt-get check' on stand-alone computer to see if any package is not proper.

Slackware :: Should Glibc Be Updated In Current Every Time There Is Kernel Update?

Feb 10, 2010

I am running Slackware64-current(multi-lib) and I have stumbled across something that I don't fully understand.I have read that the kernel-headers should not be updated as glibc is compiled against them and therefore requires that set of kernel headers. Recently the kernel version has been bumped a couple of times but glibc has stayed the same.Should glibc be re-compiled each time there is a kernel update?

Perhaps someone can explain, in very simple terms, the relationship between the kernel, the kernel headers, the kernel modules and glibc.

Fedora :: Way To Reduce Running Time / Memory Requirement Of Update Process?

Aug 14, 2010

I have an Acer Aspire netbook with 1GB RAM and 1.6 GHz dual-core 32-bit x86 chips. The KPackageKit / yum / rpm chain is running too slow for me. In addition to the time required to download any new packages or updates, it seems to require at least one full minute of processing time to install each package, update, or bug fix, no matter how small. Another full minute is consumed for each package in "cleaning up."Running yum from the command line takes nearly the same amount of time.During this time, I cannot run any other applications without severe thrashing. It seems that a full gigabyte of memory is in use with some 100M swapped out to disk.

Is there any way to reduce the running time and memory requirement of the update process? While not updating or installing software, I do not normally run out of memory (i.e. begin thrashing) until I have about a dozen browser tabs open, or the like.
