General :: How To Set Debian To Automatically Update Time And Date

Aug 14, 2011

I have an old computer and BIOS counts the time slower than real. So, how can I set my OS to update the time automatically using the internet? If it updated the time only during booting, it would be enough.

OpenSUSE :: Date And Time Automatically Adjusted 4 Hours Back

Jun 22, 2011

I have a switch tray on my computer and I installed opensuse in one of the hard drives that I have but as I switch between the windows hard drive and opensuse the time changes all the time. For example it's 10pm right now and if I switch the hard drive to opensuse the time automatically gets adjusted 4 hours back and then I fix it and when I switch back to my windows hard drive the time goes forward 4 hours. I check both region settings and they are both set to NY Eastern time. Why is it doing this?

Debian :: How To Change DATE / TIME Format

Jul 23, 2011

I set my location, but Debian displays DATE in some messed format. I would expect such neat OS to recognize all those local settings based on my location, but that's not the case. It seems that Debian follows locale settings by set language (which is en_us in my case, as I guess in majority uses) or this format is default in any case

I would like to set date/time to DD.MM.YY. hh:mm:ss, and programs that display date data to follow this setting. Simply put, in Windows there is Control Panel and you set location, then OS uses some regional settings, like currency, separators, date/time format.

Debian Configuration :: All Of Packages Are Out Of Date - Update Not Working?

Jun 30, 2010

So I just installed Debian Lenny on my PC (the install went fine). After installing, I went into aptitude and noticed that most of the packages available in the repository are out of date (python 2.5, GCC 4.3). System Update tells me that I am up to date, and when I tell synaptic/aptitude to mark all updatable packages, it does nothing. I have tried typing apt-get update as root aswell. Nothing worked.

I installed Debian with the first DVD from [URL]. During the installation, I told it to download anything that wasn't on the DVD. Shortly after installing, I had manually edited my /etc/apt/sources.list and commented out the CD line. Could any of this have messed up APT?

General :: Uptime - Getting Date & Time Of System Startup?

Mar 28, 2011

I know that uptime prints the time a machine has been up and running, but is there an easier (reliable) way to get the date of the start up than counting down from this output?I tried looking around /proc, but didn't find anything of relevance. There's also a line like this on my dmesg: [ 0.673492] rtc_cmos rtc_cmos: setting system clock to 2011-03-14 14:26:52 UTC (1300112812), but I'm wondering if this method is distribution and kernel version agnostic.

Fedora :: Network Time Protocol Part Of Date / Time Settings

Oct 3, 2009

I've got fedora 11 set up to use network time protocol to sync my laptop's date & time when I'm on-line. The question is simple really, I've added a local universality's time server (what is public) and it's live. but it's added to the end of the default time servers what come with fedora. How do I get fedora to just use the local time server, is it a case of removing the default time servers for fedora, but there is a box what says advanced options which are. sync system clock before starting service ???? & use Local time source (( is that the same as the local ntp server that I've got set up ))Hope some body can help me with the network time protocol part of Date/Time settings.

General :: Awk: Awking The Right Separator With Slashes - Colons - Commas (date Time And Data)

I wrote a hack script that outputs the following every so often: Code: 01/04/11 10:33:02: 97,1413,1447,2860 I must leave the data format the same --but I want a special number from it. In this case it's 97 and it's always going to be the first in the 4 columns of comma delimited items. I can extract with this:

Code: cat datafile | awk -F" " {'print $3'} | awk -F"," {'print $1'} But that's really sloppy. Can someone point out a better way of doing this (with awk) and tell me why?

I don't know about your computer but when mine is working properly no process is sucking 95%+ over time. I would like to have some failsafe that kills any processes behaving like that. This comes to mind because when I woke up this morning my laptop had been crunching all night long on a stray chromium child process.

This can probably be done as a cron job, but before I make it a full time job creating something like this I'd thought I should check here. :) I hate reinventing the wheel.

I used autorename / ARen for windows back in the day when I was still on XP. What I could do with the tool was:a) Sort the files by date of creationb) add an increasing number at the beginning of the filename based on the position in the sorted list.
