Ubuntu :: Moving Windows From One Desktop To Another?
May 13, 2010
i installed ubuntu 10.4 on my samsung n110 netbook, the regular one, not the netbookremix
so far it looks good, some little inconveniences though, my main one right now is: i used to be able to grab a window with the mouse on one desktop and move it to another desktop just by dragging it (i.e. drag it to the right side of the screen and then it would switch desktops automatically)
now that doesnt seem to work anymore, i can only move the window but then i have to switch desktops manually and move the window some more
this really sucks, i know for now i can use ctrl+alt+shift+left/rightarrow but im used to doing it with the mouse and i quite like it
so my question is, is this a common issue? is it specific to my environment, if that's the case i'd be happy to give you more info on it...

If I use Dosbox in full screen mode, and then exit back to KDE, my desktop icons get shuffled around.I'm using the desktop folder view in KDE 4.4.3I've noticed that this also happens with ScummVM as well, so I think it's more a KDE issue?

when i move a window around on my desktop its splited up into two where the bottom half sluggishly follows the top half i.e. the top half of the window is leading as i move the window around the desktop rather than moving around smoothly(i.e. moving the say vlc around without the window splitting[moving it around as one]. this issue also persist in fire fox where when i scroll down a web page, the page is split in two where one half of the webpage overlaps the other dependant whether i scroll up or down.
my computers configuration is:
64bt UBUntu 10.04
MSI 870A FUZION......
AMD phenom II x6
ATI HD 4550(XFX)

I would like to permanently move the special folders "Desktop", "Pictures" and "Downloads" into the "Documents" folder. Currently they are stored in their default location in my home directory. Can I just drag them there and my system will still work like normal, or do I have to do this with gconf or something like that? I'm running Ubuntu with stock Gnome desktop.

In (Gnome) Ubuntu there is a keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Alt+Shift+(Up|Down|Left|Right) that allows the user to quickly move a window from one workspace to another. I've been looking for a similar way to accomplish this in (KDE) Kubuntu. I know that you can right-click on a window in the Task Manager and use "To Desktop" to move a window, but I'm just curious if the same thing can be accomplished with the keyboard.

I have just installed 10.04 Desktop version onto my netbook after not really liking the UNR! I find that when I open some windows say Banshee when I click on something the thing is not selected and the windows moves very slightly higher up. Then when I click again it moves down again

An ubuntu-11.04 laptop is set to turn on the screensaver after 5 minutes of inactivity, and power management is set to blank the display after 15 minutes of inactivity. When the screen goes blank, you're supposed to be able to move the mouse to return to your Gnome desktop. This works sometimes, sometimes not. When it doesn't, moving the mouse doesn't eliminate the black screen, although I can see the mouse cursor. ctrl+alt+del does nothing, neither do alt+tab, alt+esc or ctrl+alt+esc. ctrl+alt+f1-12 work as they usually do, so I can "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart" from one of the TTYs, or via ssh.
I tested just now with setting the screensaver and power management display blanking to 1 minutes. After a minute the screen went blank (backlight on), and then after a second or two black (backlight off), and moving the mouse returned to Gnome as it should. So I don't know why sometimes it doesn't. Two questions:
1- Which program can I run, or which service can I restart, to return to Gnome without having to kill gdm and lose all open windows?
2- What's causing this?

On FC14/gnome I created a panel on the bottom of the desktop. After reboot the panel shows up on the top of the desktop. The panel cannot be moved to the bottom. Can go into panel "properties" and under "Orientation" selecting "Bottom" but after a second the botton switches back to "Top" without moving the panel.
The workaround was to create a new panel on the bottom, set it up, then delete the old panel from the top. When the machine is rebooted the panel goes back to the top. Seems like a basic gnome panel bug.

I have been using Mandriva2010.1 on my laptop and I love it !
But today (just for fun), I removed the laptop harddrive and connect to my desktop via sata1 (so it will boot up the same "sda1").
It boots up.. i even see the STARTING UDEV..
but it bring me to ..
Code:
INIT: going to single user
sh-4.0#
I typed "startx" and it booted up to Mandriva desktop.. but keyboard and mouse doesn't work ! Maybe because it was looking for the laptop touchpad / keyboard.
Is there a way , while its BOOTING UP, to interrupt the bootup process and make it detect new hardware ?

I've just installed 10.04 64bit on my iMac 27" i7 and before fighting with keyboard, mouse, audio. I'd like to share with you a strange behavior of the screen refresh speed, color depth and/or maybe a performance issue with the ATI. It's happening with all the resolutions. The windows borders are "cut" when moving or scaling them, the login screen seems to have a low color depth (as banding issues) and it appears slowly from top to bottom of the screen... for example, when I open the synaptic and the system ask for the password, I can see a very slow fading effect to dark screen.
I've made a full update then install the ATI proprietary drivers (from the ubuntu repositories). Basically I'd love to hear that my problem is a driver issue but it seems that 10.04 comes with the very last drivers from ATI. Does someone experience such a behavior? Does somebody know how to enhance it?

I am an experienced Windows Server user/admin (over 12 years). I have touched Linux here and there and know my way around the "GUI" portion of it; which is not to say much.
In Windows I am not just a GUI guy and have been using script and command line since the DOS days.
I want to learn Linux Server internals just as I do in Windows Server. Most of the books/guides I find are geared toward moving windows desktop user to Linux. Most linux books that I have come across are not for porting your knowledge from Windows servers to linux but instead they start to teach you linux from abc and then I lose interest because I know the basics.
what I should start so that I can pick the right distro for a server, configure it to be a solid server and deploy/manage it appropriately? I plan to use this knowledge at customer sites instead of just at home.

I have an external hard drive that needs to be readable and writable between MacOSX, Ubuntu, and Windows. I also need to work with files over 4gb in size (which can't be done with Fat32, which happens to work with all 3 OS's) I tried MacOS journaled, that didnt work. Before I start reformatting and doing a bunch of guess and check, I wanted to know if the answer was known.

When I installed fedora 14 when moving mouse to the top right corner I would get all windows arranged one next to another on the desktop so I can choose between them. Now I don't have that feature any more.
Does it conflict with compiz, or is it one of compiz plugins? Which package is responsible for it and how can I get it back?

I'm using KDE 4 under Slackware 13.1, and I'd like to move the minimize, maximize, and close buttons to the left side of the windows titlebar. Is there any way to do this on KDE? I've looked under all the windows options, and the 'Buttons' section only contained a list that didn't seem to have what I was looking for.I've only been using KDE for a couple of weeks, so I apologize if the answer is obvious, or if moving the buttons to the left is simply not an option. Any help would be appreciated.

I like the buttons on the left. I'm running 10.04 & I know how to move them. The problem is that changing themes will move them back right. OK, if the new theme has them on the right that's OK. But going back to the other theme doesn't change them back. They don't seem to be controlled by the theme, or I'm just not doing it right.

Just have installed 11.4 on an EVGA X58 I7 LGA1366 platform, 6 GB of RAM, with twin EVGA/NVidia GEForce GTS 250 SLI cards. X11 is configured for the desktop spread across all 4 monitors. I added the NVidia repo, downloaded the NVidia drivers and desktop widget. I am running the default kernel. The NVidia items showing installed via YAST are the nvidia gfx02 kmp desktop graphics driver kernel module for GEForce6xx and newer GPU's, the Nvidia G02 graphics driver for the same version card and the x11-xorg-driver-video-nouveau accelerated opensource driver for NVidia cards.
Graphics performance is horrible-- moving windows results in jittery motion, starting new programs requires a lot of time, sometimes windows leave "trails" and blur when they are moved..... and whenever anything is moved I see (via GKrellm) CPU usage go way up. I am guessing this is to service the graphics. So I am not satisfied that I have the correct driver installed for the video cards. Additionally I question that the noveaux accelerated open source driver is there as well--I would assume that was part of the install package.
From the NVidia page, using their tools to insure the correct driver is selected, I downloaded NVidia Linux-X86_64-260.19.44.run. I do not find this same driver designation (minus the .run) on any of the repo listed drivers in YAST. I assume that to manually compile the driver I downloaded its going to be configure-make-make-install or something similar. I do have (in prep for this) gcc, make and the kernel.src installed. Question is should I uninstall the existing drivers and NVidia packages before trying to build and install the NVidia package that I downloaded directly from their site?

I'm having a very faint but noticeable electric-like buzzing/grinding. It is not the hard drive but sounds very similar.
It occurs when i move scroll bars, or drag windows. It is highly replicable.
The only other time this has happens is when i install KDE which resulted in me reinstalling. Something id prefer to avoid. I haven't installed KDE this time, but this seems to have started immediately after replacing my fstab file which i accidentally deleted. That's the only thing i can think of.

I have my main box, Ubuntu 10.04lts, and I am trying to use remote desktop viewer to see the desktop on a Windows XP machine. The machines are side by side The Ubuntu box is hardwired to my network router, and the XP machine is connected via wireless. Both get to the internet fine, and I can ping the Ubuntu box from the XP box. But, I cannot ping the XP box from the Ubuntu box, and Remote Desktop Viewer won't establish a connection to the VNC server I have running on the XP box.

On my home test 5.5 VM, after converting to ext4, moving items to the trashcan in Gnome results in nothing showing in the desktop Trashcan. Looks like a bug in gnome-vfs' support (or lack of it) for ext4, or have I got some other more subtle corruption going on? It's of little importance to me as I'm rarely in the GUI, but it would be nice to see confirmation or otherwise.

I am a ubuntu novice. I am running 10.04 LTS on a Lenova laptop. Runs fine. Yesterday upgraded firefox and upgraded Java 6 from update 20 to update 24 so that I could use the Zotero bibiliographic program in FF. After the upgrade and restart, the windows title bar that includes minimize, maximize and close buttons has disappeared from all windows that I open except google chrome. If I open and app, or FF, or the dvd player, title bar is gone. I have noticed that Java updates have caused similar problems before but none of the prescribed steps seems to have changed my system

I have VMware server installed on this machine. I also have a Windows XP VM running all the time. I have it bridged so it gets a valid IP from my router and such and is in my network. I use KRDC to remote desktop to it and I make it full screen. However if I want to go back to my desktop I have to minimize KRDC.
Is there a RPD client out there I can use so I can go full screen on 1 desktop and have everything else on another desktop then use KDE's Desktop switcher or ctrl+alt+arrow keys to switch between desktops to flip between Windows XP and Linux without having to minimize?
