My USB flash drive has stopped working with Ubuntu.
Normally when I remove it I unmount it first, but the last time I just unplugged it. After I unplugged it, it started not working.
When I put it in a windows machine, it shows up as drive E: but says "no disk" when I try to access it.
In my Ubuntu machine I can see it as USBDrive under Places > Computer, but it's unmounted. When I click mount nothing happens.
I have a new flash drive (pen drive) .Last few days it work fine .But now when i plug it in usb port , then a error message appear "unable to mount media.There is probably no media in the drive" .

I have a netbook running Ubuntu Netbook Edition and I would like a USB flash drive to be automatically mounted whenever I plug it in. The drive is FAT formatted. It mounts when I plug it in but all files are only writable by my user, other users only have read access. I understand that I need to add a corresponding entry to the /etc/fstab file. I've added the following so far:/dev/sdb1 /mnt/USB_DRIVE vfat
Firstly, is that appropriate so far? I've created /mnt/USB_DRIVE as root. Next, I'm not sure what options I should be finishing the line with, especially to get all users to be able to write to the drive.
I made a persistent install of Ubuntu on a flash drive. I made changes to that installation. The software (Unetboontin) sets this all up. I think it partitions it for you. How do I image that flash drive to another flash drive?

View 3 Replies View RelatedBack in Febuary, my wife bought a Toshiba Satilite from Wal-Mart and a few days ago the hard drive got toasted. So now I'm using an 8gig usb drive as the boot drive. I also have 2 other flash drives for downloads and such but overall I am very pleased.
I'm running 11.04 32 bit and was wandering if 64 bit made a difference. I've got 4 gigs of ddr3. It's slow to boot, but once it's running, it's faster then Windows 7. Very nice.
Is there anything I should chage, use, since I'm running it off a flash drive??
I have 3 seperat drives, 2 x 16 gigs and an 8 gig, and was wandering which one would be best for booting off of? What do I look for??

Since upgrading to SuSe 11.4 I've noticed that whenever I insert removable media I now get asked for root authentication before mounting! This is a real pain and I cant find any way to change this
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to use the most-base install of opensuse 11.4 and so i'm using the text-only interface. I looked up some guides on using the 'mount' command but I'm encountering problems. I tried doing.
mkdir /tmp/flash

mount /dev/sdb /tmp/flash
but first off, I don't even know if sdb is my flash device, there's ~60 things in my /dev/ directory, and ~10 things that look like 'sdb' but I try anyway, and I generally get an error telling me that either /dev/sdb is busy, or /tmp/flash is busy but I wanted to check here and clarify first, how do I even know which /dev/ item is my flash drive? When I plug in my flash drive, no less than 3 new entries appear in /dev/ so, I'm a little confused. What do I do?
I bought an 8GB flash drive because my D drive doesn't read DVDs. Anyway, my goal is to install Linux ubuntu and have it be my OS (replacing Windows XP). Last night I went to the Ubuntu homepage and downloaded the Ubuntu desktop edition 32-bit and put it on my flash drive. I followed the instructions on how to open and run it, but I was never asked about whether I want Linux to run side by side with Windows or if I want it to replace Windows. It downloaded the whole program, my computer restarted and then (on a black screen) it asked if I wanted to use Windows XP Home Edition or Linux Ubuntu. It's really frustrating because it took a while to download and install it in the first place AND to top that off, when I tried to use Ubuntu it went to a black screen and at the top said that there was an error. So I uninstalled all the ubuntu program and software and now I have a clean slate and want to try this again. I am a complete n00b. Could someone please walk me through how I can go about downloading (w/ links plz), installing and making ubuntu my ONLY OS on my computer via a flash drive? I'm desperate and I don't want to go through all of that and make the same mistake again!

However, when I insert it into the USB slot, the light on the drive glows, but I'm unable to mount the drive, neither does ubuntu detect it.I disconnected the flash drive, and then run `dmesg | tail`. Am in the process of upgrading from an ancient OpenSuSE release (7.2) to 11.2. One thing I have been unable to do that worked fine under 7.2 is remotely mounting a compact flash drive from an XP machine. Worked fine for many moons on 7.2:
# mount -t cifs -o rw //xpbox/'cf (H)' /cf0
I get:
mount error(12): Cannot allocate memory
Other cifs mounts of hard disks work fine.
I found a posting that says this means the memory allocation error is from the XP side. It says to fiddle with the XP registry, specifically IRPStackSize. I was not confident this fix would work since there should not be anything significantly more consuming with 11.2 compared to 7.2, and indeed, I got the same error after changing the parameter to 18 and rebooting the XP machine. Any ideas? I have some suspicion that the space and parenthesis in the share name might be fouling up someone. XP forces the share name to this for some reason.

I'm having a problem on startup where GRUB seems to time out attempting to mount my main drive. Here is the error it gives me:

My 10.04 is mounting my USB drive at startup. This is fine except sometimes it mounts to drivename_ rather than to drivename. How do I make it always mount to drivename.

I cleared everything off but am trying to see if I can arrange it so that I can back up from linux and access (if need be) from a Windows machine.

Installed new drive in notebook, connected old one with SATA/USB cable, both are encrypted disks. It detected the old drive and prompted for password in Gnome, after entering correct decrypt password, this error appeared:

So if I boot without a DVD or CD in my optical drive, then I attempt to put one it, it doesn't mount. I try mounting with the terminal and that fails as well. If I boot with the media in the optical drive, it works fine. (this problem occurs both on my desktop and laptop and I know the DVD and CD's work in both 9.10 and in windows, This error also occurs with Linux Mint and Sabayon leading me to believe this is a kernel issue).

View 3 Replies View RelatedI added a second internal hard drive to my system.It took a while to figure out how to mount it, and I thought all my problems were over.I want to use this for storage for Transmission since this would keep all the files independent of my other hard drive.One thing that I noticed is that when I restart my computer it doesn't automatically mount the drive (Transmission gives me an error message saying it's not able to access the drive).So I remounted it, and noticed that it restarts all my torrents.One thing that I noticed is that Transmission keeps the .torrent files in /tmp and IIRC there is an option to move them wherever you want to in Deluge (I don't know if this will help anything or not).I don't like Deluge, but if it's somehow easier.
So how can I retain my settings prior to restarting and make this permanent?I do like to turn my computer off from time to time, and I am quad booting with other distros that I like testing out.
I purchased a new hard drive, plugged it in, formated it, edited fstab to auto mount it, and though it is mounting the drive, it won't allow me write privileges. I can read the drive, but I need root access to write to it. The drive giving me the issue is sdd1. The others, I have no problems with. I can read and write to those without a hitch.

I need to access my windows harddrive, however, so I used NTFS Configuration Tool to mount the drive. However, whenever I reboot, it fails to mount and I actually have to go back into NTFS Config Tool, delete the old mount, and remount it. This is tedious. My /etc/fbstab file looks as follows:

Running 10.10 64bit Kernel 2.6.35-23 I am noticing what I think is a big hiccup in my boot process my drive is mounting at around the 4sec mark then my system pauses for roughly 13 seconds, you can even it see it on the screen a blinking cursor comes up the entire time. Then during the rest of the boot my drive will re-mount at least 4 more times. Then during use of my system there will be random re-mounts throughout the use. Here is the mounting message

I just noticed the pausing recently after an update but have been seeing this re-mounting since install. Are these normal? They dont seem like it to me, and if they are normal why such a long time on the initial mount and every re-mount takes 4-5 seconds. Let me know if I can provide any further info as well.
I don't know anything about Unbuntu I installed it because I had a virus and I didn't have a copy of windows. I have an extra HD with lots of media on it. At first it seemed to show up but then it disappeared. I did the sudo commands and the disk shows up as sdb. I have no idea what I am doing or what to do and all the guides keep talking about adding partitions and programs I have to dl from the net. This is a stand alone computer with no net connection.
