Ubuntu :: Automatically Mounting Encrypted Partitions ?
Nov 24, 2010I've created some encrypted partitions using Disk Utility, and would like them to be automatically mounted when Ubuntu starts up. Is there a guide to this anywhere?
I've gathered that it involves /etc/crypttab and possibly /etc/init.d/cryptdisks, but haven't had much success so far.
Ideally, some of the partitions would mount early in the boot process, while some of them can mount after I've logged in.
Ubuntu :: Lucid Automatically Mounting Windows Partitions?
May 16, 2010Fairly new to Ubuntu (started with Karmic), now dualbooting Lucid and Windows 7. Lucid is automatically mounting my NTSC partitions, which is pretty convenient since I store all my media there, but I recently deleted one of the partitions and just extended the other one. Now Lucid is still trying to automatically mount the partition that no longer exists and giving me an error message every time I boot up. Not really a big deal, just a minor annoyance, but I'm wondering what I do to make it realize the partition is gone.

Oct 21, 2010I have various drives and partitions that I have been mounting through fstab, but sometimes I had to do it manually, but now, I can't get them to mount at all. At first I thought it might be a disk failure, but booting to a Live CD shows all the drives working fine. when the entries are added into fstab, $mount -l shows them as mounted to their relevant mount points, but the data does't show in either terminal or dolphin?
Typing $umount /dev/drive always returns /dev/drive not mounted.
When I comment out the entries in fstab and reboot and try a manual mount, I always get /dev/drive already mounted or /mount/point busy. $mount -l does not show any mount entry points for the drive. My /home/user partition is now full as I can't save data on the other drives, so I don't know if this is an issue. Also I use a mixture of encrypted partitions and non encrypted partitions, but this wasn't an issue before. Checking some of the logs didn't show any errors. The problem seemed to start when gdd was saving data to a partition mount point I thought was mounted but wasn't. I have since removed that data and even created a new mount point.

Dec 12, 2010played around with Plymouth Manager yesterday, and today, my system would not start. I got some help from #ubuntu, and to my surprise, startx ran without problems. sudo service gdm start also worked perfectly. However, when I boot up my computer, I am always taken to the recovery screen. How can I stop this from happening, get my boot screen back, and make everything work as it should?I'm on Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit with an nVidia GeForce 8800 GT and version current on the nVidia restricted drivers.

Apr 28, 2010everytime i open a terminal window, all i see is:

and i have to type bash everytime to get it running. i found a bandaid fix by having it type bash at the "custom command" profile preference... but i still consider the problem to be unsolved, because i still have to manually type 'bash' whenever i log remotely (putty). it seems like something happened, and now bash is not loaded by the terminal by default like it should.
PS: i already tried 'cp /etc/skel/.bashrc ~./bashrc', and it didn't seem to do anything.
I am using Ubuntu 9.10, fairly fresh install. Had one hard reset since I installed it, which could be when the problem started. Also, I was messing a bit with profiles, switching their ID's and adding/deleting them (not sure if that would be the problem).

Aug 24, 2010I'm moving a homebrew arcade cabinet I have in my sitting room over from Gentoo to Ubuntu. Gentoo's served me well for a couple of years, but it refuses to recognise a touchscreen I recently installed on the cab, so I thought I'd give Ubuntu a try.
There is very little space on the SATA DOM inside the board in the cab, so I try and put as little OS on there as possible. To that end, I installed the minimal iso, and then apt-got X. I manually configured xorg.conf to make both monitors attached to the cab work, and I can enter X fine from the command line.
But what I need to do is have X start on powerup and automatically run my game. In Gentoo this is as simple as putting "xinit [GAME]" into /etc/init.d/local.start (the equivalent of rc.local). No login required, the prompt didn't even come up until I'd exited the game.
However, if I try and do this in Ubuntu, X can't find any devices, even though rc.local is at position 99. I've tried putting the lines in rc.local as well as manually update-rc.d-ing my own files, but no luck. X refuses to start until after the login.
So what seem to need is some way of automatically logging in as root on the command line, starting X, then running my game.
Ubuntu :: Mounting Ext4 Drives/partitions In 6.06?
Apr 5, 2010I just recently found an iso for 6.06 and installed it on an old pc of mine that already had 8.04 and crunchbang on it. crunchbang is on an ext4 formatted partition.
When I setup 6.06, it asked me what i wanted to mount my drives as, so i told it to mount the ext4 system as hda1.
whenever 6.06 boots, it tries to mount hda1 but can't because it doesn't recognize ext4.
What I am asking is this: is there a deb or a package out there I can install to make 6.06 recognize ext4? if not, how can i make it so that 6.06 does not want to mount hda1?
I can get past the initial error message and into the desktop, so 6.06 does work.

Nov 22, 2010This is my first time using Ubuntu (though I've been interested in it for about a year). I decided to dual-boot my Acer AspireOne netbook running Windows 7 starter with Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook version. I am in the process of looking through all of the information in terms of getting use to the system, but right now I am trying to figure out how to access my files on the Windows half of the computer. I've been following the instructions here: [URL] but I am unable to get NFTS configuration to run, so I moved onto PySDM which appeared to work just fine except now when I boot up it gives me the error: "Unable to mount media/sda3" Press S to skip mounting process or M for manual recovery
Since I am still very much a newbie when it comes to terminal commands, I stayed away from the manual recovery and pressing S just puts me back into the welcome screen so I can log in. I've been searching the forums and I can't find much on it. Maybe I am missing a really important factor here? Also, in some version of the instructions, the other partitions are supposed to become viewable once mounted. I went into looking through the files using PySDM, but what I saw was mostly greyed out files...

I've been looking for a way to solve this problem, but I haven't been able to find any solutions. I know a lot of people found it annoying but I rather liked it.

May 8, 2010I have a couple apps that I cannot figure out how to prevent them from starting automatically upon logging in. They are NOT listed in my Startup Applications under preferences. For example, pidgin. Pidgin automatically starts at each login even though it is not in the startup apps nor can I find an option in pidgin itself. Tomboy is another. I always get an error that tomboy cannot be added to my panel when I restart. The error in the tomboy panel log is that tomboy is already running. Does ubuntu have a hidden "start up" folder like Windows does in the start menu? Where can I clear this file/folder?

By the way; are man pages written by someone using their tows to type and getting beaten by a stick for every character they type? It seems missing a lot of info. Anyway, I know smbd is started with /etc/init/smbd.conf and there is a line like:

I am trying to create a link to my windows xp workgroup where all my data is stored (I was surprised that linux could even see it!) I mounted a volume on the desktop apparently... that worked fine until I rebooted and it had disappeared. it was fairly annoying that I had to go back into the network and re-mount the volume. How can I get it to stay put, even after rebooting? I have limited to zero knowledge of linux/ubuntu so you may need to break it down for me.I tried using 'Storage Device Manager' as someone suggested but emmm I didn't understand a word of it. May 20, 2010I'm having a problem mounting a vfat partition using fstab... If I don't use fstab and mount it manually, everything works fine. But if I add a line to fstab, it will mount, but will have root permission only - so I can't write to it. can mount another partition (ext4) through fstab and everything works fine. Just not sure why there's a problem with the vfat partion. Also, if after mounting it through fstab I try to unmount it, it gives an error saying only root can unmonut it.

Fedora :: Mounting Other Partitions As User?
Jul 4, 2010When i use the "Places" menu to try to access the other partitions on the same hard-drive i get a pop-up box asking me for the Root user password. Is there any way to mount it without? The normal user is now in the sudoers group but really i don't think i should be asked for authentication at all?

May 26, 2009I want the following behavior in kubuntu 9.04 when I plug a device (USB stick or CD disk):
1. It should be mounted automatically for me. Now it isn't, though it appears in fdisk -l output: Code: Disk /dev/sdd: 8006 MB, 8006926336 bytes

General :: Mounting Windows Drive Automatically In Ubuntu?
Mar 16, 2011I have dual boot on my laptop. First OS is Windows XP and second is Ubuntu 10.10.
When I click on places menu in Ubuntu, I can access Windowz XP Drives.
If I access some pdf file or document while in Ubuntu which is in Windows XP Drive, then it will come in Recent Document in Places menu.
Now I restart Ubuntu and click on Recent Documents and click on the document which I accessed in last session ( before restart ).
It says Unable to Open Document.
Then I click Places again and access my Windows XP drive. Then again I click Recent Document and click on document, I am able to open the document.
My guess is this happens because my windows drives are not mounted automatically when I start Ubuntu. How can I mount Windows drive automatically when I start Ubuntu.
OpenSUSE :: Sound Turns Automatically On While Starting The Pc?
Mar 8, 2010i run opensuse 11.2 with kdebase4-4.3.5-0.1.1.x86_64 on a hp elitebook 8530w. when i start opensuse and the sound is initially turned off, it will be turned on while starting. if i turn it of manually (by pushing the appropriate button) it will be turned on again. I assume that there is a script like .bashrc for bash scripts which tells the system to turn on the sound. Does anyone knows whether there is such a script and if yes, where can i find it and edit it?
