Would like to make an installation with a number of programs. I would like to take a snapshot ( backup ) of my installation and being able to restore that later.
How can I take a snapshot, is it possible to 'save' everything to an ISO and burn
to a CD ?
I am using version 10.10.
Actually I had a folder called Lib, in which I had a few libraries installed and configured.(MPI, PETSc, SLEPc) I accidently deleted (by rm) the contents of that folder.
Then I reinstalled MPI,PETSC,SLEPC using the same tarballs as earlier(thus, the version etc. is the same).
I already had a fortran program with many modules and subroutine files, and the corresponding makefile which used to compile and run fine. But now when I type "make" in the same directory as before, I get this: (shortened, many similar errors)

Firstly, why is mpif90 compiling my program when I didnt tell it to? In my makefile, I have specified gfortran as my compiler....nowhere have I even mentioned mpif90. Such a thing never used to occur before.
Also, if I rename file_variable.f to file_variable.f90, these errors dissappear (I understand why, but that is not the problem), but a new error comes:
Why is the new MPI installation interfering with make ? I want to go back to how things were before I stupidly broke all installations. The errors themselves are not the problem, the problem is why the new mpi installation is interfering with make.
It seems as if mpif90 has taken over make and gfortran. I suppose I didnt install it correctly, or probably I didnt uninstall the earlier one correctly.
Everything that worked earlier doesnt work suddenly. I use ubuntu 11.04 MPICH2-1.3.2
in terminal: if var = 2 and we write the file name "name$i" it would be "name2" but my file name is "name02" (in fact I wanna have a 'for' loop on about 50 files named: a01, a02, ... , a50)

Right now, KDE programs look like really bad. This is not a reduced color depth image, this is what I'm getting, with strange black lines around the buttons. I have only installed that particular KDE application, I have not installed KDE itself.

I am using Ubuntu 11.04 with Gnome 2.32.1
Like under Windows, there is a shortcut for minimizing all windows: Win+D. However under Gnome this does not work similar as under Windows. Under Windows I can just press Win+D and everything will get minimized. However under Gnome this does not work for fullscreen programs.
I have to close a fullscreen application and start it again if I just want to switch to another program like for example from a game to my browser. I don't want to close it but only minimize it.
Everyone who deals with Linux knows that partitions on hard drives are designated as "sdx#", i.e., sda1 sdb2, etc. I know through experimentation that the number portion of the designation is assigned not according to order on the disk, but chronologically in the order they are created.
Further, if you have several partitions on the disk-say, sda1 through sda3-and you delete sda2, the designation of sda1 will remain the same, but sda3 will become the new sda2. The creation of any further partitions on the drive will start with designation sda3 and increment from that point.
At times this creates a conundrum, especially concerning bootable partitions. Some time back I rendered a partition containing OpenSUSE unbootable because of this, even though Ubuntu owned the GRUB bootloader in the MBR. Ubuntu's GRUB could find and point to the partition using the command "sudo update-grub", but when OpenSUSE took over the boot-up process, its GRUB was pointed to the wrong partition and would freeze up.
My question is this:
Under Windows, one is able to make a Drive letter persistent. Windows will keep the drive letter for that partition and assign around it. Is there a way to change a drive designation number, or at least make it persistent, under Linux? It would be a handy method to forestall these types of booting problems, among other things.
Presently, when a person has installed Linux side-by-side with Windows and want to delete the Windows partition and expand the Linux partition into the free space, I will tell them to format the partition, then shrink it to next to nothing instead of deleting it. This preserves the partition ID scheme while giving them the space to expand their Linux partition into...especially helpful with a seasoned Linux installation that would be a PITA to reinstall and set back up.
Oh, and I already know about UUID. This article explains it, but if you look down through the comments, you will see reasons that it is problematic for desktop application and usage. I want to make it as simple as possible for new Linux users (and myself! ).
Can I make Yast/Ldap accept usernames that start with a number. All our current users have the format 09-first.last or 10-first.last etc.

I've been working with Macs nowadays and noticed that programs load like "instantly" once it has been open and closed.
I don't know if MAC is pre-fetching them to somewhere but it is good to start Firefox right after you closed it.
what MAC actually does and how this could be implemented ? I have 6gb of ram on my laptop. Running Kubuntu 10.04 RC1.

View 3 Replies View RelatedNormally when a program is open an entry is placed on the taskbar in order to easily find it, which is useful when a lot of programs are open. In Ubuntu 10.04, when I moved a program to the other monitor (I'm using 2 monitors) the taskbar entry also moves to the taskbar on that monitor.
Now I switched over to Ultimate Edition, which is Ubuntu 10.04 with a lot of stuff added to it. When I drag a program to the other monitor, the entry in the taskbar disappears, but it does not reappear in the taskbar of the other monitor. So now the only way for me to find a program on this monitor if its hidden behind other windows is to use alt-tab.
I want to be able to do
sudo ./program.py
instead of always having to do
sudo python program.py
What do I need to change?
I m using Vaio E series laptop, from 2 days my number keys are not working, My laptop have the desktop like number keypad. Those keys are not giving response was working fine. I checked with boot cd, Booted with ubuntu cd and try, num keys are working, I guess I accediently remove something

Unfortunately I don't have much exper building computers/ hardware. What I'm wondering is whether the number of devices (like hard drives and optical drives, etc) is a function of what the mobo can support; or, if the bays are there and the cable has enough plugs I can just go for it.Specifically I'm trying to have 3 disks and one optical drive. The machine happens to have been a media center version desktop so it has this like 9 in 1 card reader thing in it but I don't think it uses that flat cable for data transfer anyhow. It looks to be connected differently.
I'm currently running Ubuntu (w/ GRUB) and Windows XP. I'd like to remove Ubuntu and run the recovery on Windows XP because it has started not running correctly. The computer is about 5 years old and I figured I'd just wipe it clean and start over (read: remove Ubuntu and reinstall windows via the recovery console).

However, I'm confused about determining the boot device number for Windows. I've run "sudo fdisk -l" and I can identify the windows drive in the list it says:

Am I looking for the 7, the 1, or something completely different? This is also the first partition on the list.
sda2 (id: c) is a FAT32 drive. I think this is the recovery partition included on the HP desktop.
sda3 (id:83) is Linux
sda4 (id: 82) is swap
I just need to run fixmbr.
Why does unix ps -l whows one number in column "PRI" but in same time ps -o pri shows another number? cpu and nice are zero for those processes
View 1 Replies View RelatedI put my two SATA hard drives in a new computer (new mb, cpu, no pci SATA adapter, built-in nVidia graphics), and I thought everything was going well. The Mythbuntu logo came up, but the bar at the bottom did not move. It eventually dropped me out to a (initramfs) prompt.
When I used the recovery mode, this is where it had problems:

I had a SATA PCI card in my old computer, would adding that to the new system make it work? Is there someway to update the UUID numbers (I think I have done this before).

I did install same package ok in 10.4 but now after I upgrade to 10.10 I am getting this error. I have already tried:
# sudo dpkg --clear-avail
# sudo aptitude update
# sudo aptitude upgrade
This has to be the sixth time I am going to have to reinstall Ubuntu (Can't get enough of that Linux greatness) in the past 6 months. I just don't understand what exactly is wrong, I don't install anything extra (but the ubuntu restricted extras) yet updates that ask me to reboot will take me to a GRUB command line screen and trying to boot through the command line interface gives me an, "Invalid Magic Number", error.
There should be an official tool for when problems like this come up, so that users like me can easily move their files off their HDD before reinstalling. I didn't come here to rant but, does anyone know what may be causing this everytime, how it can be avoided maybe even how to deal with the Magic Number error and boot in (I wouldn't mind typing in the commands every time BTW)?

Every time update-grub run all these are put back. Editing grub.cfg does not help.
I just upgraded from jaunty and somewhere in the process (or just after, I'm no longer sure just when it started) I started getting this error whenever I try to install or upgrade a package. Some of my software isn't working properly - some won't even load - so I'm not sure if the installations are actually succeeding, or not. But apt-get install -f shows nothing but a list of stuff I need to autoremove (mostly dev files). This particular message is the output of the details tab in synaptic, but I've gotten the same thing in terminal from apt-get. Quote:

I'm an old user of Ubuntu/Linux but have stumbled across my first major problem in years. I just can't get my head around it.I own a Asus Eee Pc 1005HA it has roughly 160gb and is currently running WinXP. I'm trying to install the latest Netbook remix 10.04 onto the machine as a dual boot option.I've loaded the iso onto a usb drive and everything works perfectly. The problem is during installation. I can't work out how to set up the partitions for a dual boot option. Below is the current configuration on the system.
