Every time update-grub run all these are put back. Editing grub.cfg does not help.
I'm familiar with Ubuntu and the like, and have GRUB 2 installed as my boot-loader. I was wondering if there was any way to get one menu entry to be re-directed to another. Specifically, whenever I select my third menu entry, I want it to execute the code on menu entry 10. My reason for doing this would be that after customizing my GRUB 2 menu, I came into the problem of updated kernels. Basically I would like a single "Ubuntu, Latest Kernel" entry that always redirected to menuentry 10, where my latest "Ubuntu, linux 2.6.xx-x-generic" entry is. In order to temporarily solve my issue, I've set my "/etc/default/grub" file's "GRUB_DEFAULT" to "9", although I'd rather not do this.

Just recently the menu displays duplicate entries. The first two entries are repeated (see below). What might have caused these duplicate entries to appear and how to correct them? Before this problem occurred I did not issue any sudo commands.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm running Ubuntu 9.10 dual booted with Windows XP. Ever since I installed 9.10, I get a long list of OS's (actually, multiple repeats of what appears to be the same Ubuntu install), and I can't get rid of them.I've looked through various tutorials and the GRUB 2 Community documentation (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2) but I still can't get rid of the menu items.I edited the 40_custom file and was able to add the entries I wanted to see, and then chmoded 644 all the other files in the /etc/grub.d directory and run update-grub.The custom entries do appear at the end of the menu now, but the old entries are still there as well. This is what I get when I run the update-grub:

I have two leftover entries in the Grub2 menu after running update-grub. One is leftover from an Ubuntu installation under Windows 7 referring to a Vista boot. Never had Vista on my system, and if I were to select this option it will lock my computer. Same deal with an older Jaunty boot option - as I have identical worded options one good and one dead option.
If I have to live with these two dead selections on my Grub2 menu I will. But I'd rather get rid of them. I don't want to use an old tool for Grub editing that is no longer workable for Grub 2.
I've got a dual boot PC with windows 7 & Ubuntu. I had installed Ubuntu 10.04 & recently upgraded it to 10.10. Now I have these entries in the boot menu.

I just installed Ubuntu on the second partition of my hard drive. I have Windows 7 installed on the first partition. My problem is is that when I rebooted after a successful OS installation and apparent grub install, it went straight to boot up Windows 7. There's probably a simple way to get the grub menu to appear that I'm unaware of, right?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 (using Update Manager) in an attempt to get to 10.04. Installation and upgrade seemed to go OK until reboot. Now I only get a black screen - I don't see the grub menu, I don't even see any way to access the BIOS menu- not even a blinking cursor. I can hear it start and I can see the numlocks key go on. Ctrl-Alt-PrtScrn-B does not reboot (nor does Ctrl-Alt-Backspace- but I didn't expect that would) Surprisingly Ctrl-Alt-Del does (or at least it sounds like it does) reboot the system. I do have a NVIDIA cards and after reading around I suspect that this is likely the problem but I have no idea what to do now..
Here's what I've attempted:
I figured since I wanted to get to 10.04 anyway and this was so troublesome I could just go do a fresh install with a Live CD or USB to 10.04. However, even with a live CD or USB I still just get a blank screen.
Continually holding down F2 (and other function keys to try to access Bios)
Holding down Shift while booting
Esc while booting
Moving the monitor to the VGA port (as opposed to the NVIDIA card).
Other information...
Previously I had tried to upgrade to 9.10, but ran into problems with it not recognizing my RAID, so I just found it easier to go back to 9.04. (So although this is likely a graphics problem I guess the possibility is that now it doesn't even see my boot drive- although- if that was the case, I'd assume I wouldn't have the same problems from the CD or USB boot.) My ultimate goal is to get this to 10.04, if I could do it with an upgrade instead of a fresh install I'd prefer that, but at this point just getting back to a functioning computer would be ideal. I see many options in other posts for how to get back once you can access a command line- but since I can't even see that, I'm not sure what to do now.

How can i edit grub menu from initial grub screen is it possible to it's own 'e' option or 'c' from grub command line?
View 4 Replies View RelatedIn Ubuntu 8.04, when I wanted to reduce the boot menu delay I had to do the following:
enter in terminal: gksu gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
I then looked for the line that begins with timeout and changed the value (shortened the delay)
Now with ubuntu 10.10, when I tried this I do get into the Gedit text editor as with 8.04 but it is completely blank, no entries at all? So nothing to change! So how do I change the boot menu delay in ubuntu 10.10?
i have been running Kubuntu 10.04 on my primary hard drive, and i have a second 1.5TB HD that i use for storage. so shrunk the secondary HD partition and created a second 50GB partition and i installed Ubuntu 10.10 on it and told it to rewrite the mbr on my primary HD. Where i am at: i took the menu entry from my Kubuntu "grub.cfg" and the entry from my Ubuntu "grub.cfg" and put them in the 40_custom file. so now when i boot-up my computer, it shows both installations at the bottom of Grub2s menu list. with all the menu entries that Grub automatically adds.
What i would like to know is how do i make it so that the Grub2 menu only shows the entries that i add to the 40_Custom file and not the randomly generated list aswell.
Updated to 10.04 OK except for a couple of things. No sound icon on the task bar and it's not in the 'add to taskbar list'. Not a major problem, just put it in the 'start programs section'.Annoying thing is after selecting from the grub boot menu, the machine seems to be suffering some indesision as the cursor sits on the top lhs of the screen flashing and the screen modulates between various degrees of darkness. Then the machine boots OK. Certainly slower than karmic - not quicker as reported. Seems to be some conflict happening. There is a duplication of the kernal entries for default and safe. Mabe this is the problem. I have run update-grub2, but it keeps giving me double entries.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu via Wubi, but now when I boot up the computer, it asks me to select Ubuntu or Windows, then after I select Ubuntu, it takes me to the Grub menu, which also asks whether I want Ubuntu or Windows. I've had this on multiple computers, and it's not very useful. How to change this?
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo after installing linux for the first time - version 11.04, first there are 1000 problems which don't fix especially the fact it didn't boot into linux half the time. I managed to get on it and there was an update, thinking this would fix something I updated it and now I can't do anything on my laptop! Before I could atleast log onto windows but I can't even do that now. The place where you can press f12 to go into the bios and change priority I can't even get there because when it says to press f12 I press it but nothing happens and it still takes me to a blank screen with no grub menu no nothing.

View 8 Replies View RelatedThe first is I seem to have 3 GRUB installs. So whilst I update the one from my live session, the change does not appear in the boot up menu. I had installed 10.10 from a CD into a different partition (sda6), but that will not boot, so I have just deleted this and done another grub install and update. The kernel I am using has just been updated from 10.04 to 10.10 too, and it is this that I use and the Grub I have been working on (sda5).

1. Western digital 500GB - Windows 7
2. Seagate 500GB - Linux HDD - had ubuntu 10.04 on it before suse
Ok basically, ive been trying distro's by installing them on my linux HD, my favourite is ubuntu, but i wanted to see what else is out there so i tried out OpenSUSE, and with suse i unfortantly came across many problems with grub-legacy, and i solved that eventually by changing my boot hard disk in BIOS to the seagate, and installing grub on that Ive never had a grub issue in the past using ubuntu, only with suse Then i decided to go back to ubuntu because everything just works and i like .deb packages, so i installed 10.10 32Bit
Everything went fine, chose default install options, formatted the Seagate drive, and installed to the seagate, HD changedt the boot drive to the western digital in BIOS ( were ubuntu likes to install grub in the past ) booted fine, installed fine, grub showed fine, booted to linux then i went back to windows for a day of gaming and fun, i just rebooted about 30 minutes ago to play with linux, and i cant access the grub menu my pc goes to the POST screen and then were grub should show, i get a blank screen and the pc just reboots to the POST constantly this problem has never happened with ubuntu, ive had 10.10 before, this is all started after removing opensuse
ive tried F8 and booting from both drives, the seagate i just get a white underline for ages and nothing happens and i cant boot to windows on the WD Im currently on my livecd im using the 11.04 livecd, all my cds arent labelled, so i have no idea which is which, i just chucked one in to get a browser, but i gotta say natty 11.04 IS AWSOME
Here's the problem: My ubuntu goes into a black screen with "_" flashing after selecting the kernel in grub menu. Everything has been working just fine since I installed it (about a month ago, when 11.04 came out). The problem must have something to do with grub not finding the correct partition or something like that. I was messing around with pysdm, trying to make it auto-mount one of my partitions, so that's the likely cause of my problem. However, I did not edit anything on the ubuntu partition, only the partition where my files are located. Is there any way to tell grub which partition to load upon booting up?

I read online that that meant I had to fix my grub menu, which I did. Now a regular grub menu pops and and I have no idea what to do with it. Whats a grub menu? View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter a fresh install of opensuse 11.3 and a xen-hypervisor and tools (all default install, nothing special) just get a black screen when I try to use kernel-xen. Default kernel runs like a charm. Xen-kernel gives me a black screen just after grub menu.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm currently trying to get to the root of an problem on startup; unfortunatly when booting after the first couple of messages when booting without quiet and with nosplash in the grub menu I still end up with the nice blue background and the slowly filling bubble... I'd like to go back to the old, boring, messy, but much loved and now much missed (least by me) text boot screen where I can see wtf my system is doing and where its hanging during the boot process.
(I know the cause of the hang now but still want to go back to the old fashioned noisy boot environment - not a fan of the windows style silent boot... I like to know what's going on and that my PC hasn't decided to join the French and go on strike, though wouldn't blame my poor netbook if it has, hammering the bleeper doing random number analysis - not something an atom 270 is designed for)
I installed CentOS 5.5 last night using the DVD ISO (from a USB drive thanks to the Universal USB Installer). I selected the Server and Virtualization packages, and finished the install all the way through. At the end, the installer asked me to remove any installation media and reboot the system. After rebooting, the system hangs on a blank screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner that does not accept text. This is before the GRUB screen appears. For partitioning, I created a 4GB swap partition on sdb and a 16GB ext3 partition on sda, mounted at /, with the remaining free space on sdb mounted at /storage.
Does anyone know why this system is hanging before the GRUB menu?
