I'd like to get path of one library to link it dynamically in my program. Probobly the best way would be to add macro to my configure.ac file.

I have a /data and /backup. on backup there is a folder called Info that has a bunch of data on it, but its not shared through Samba. So what I'm thinking is that on one of my Samba shares on data there is a folder which is really just a link to that /backup/Info folder. Is there an easy way to search through /data to see if there's a link to it, or do i have to manually go through and do a ton of ls's?

I've been searching the site to find out what the program path is for Ubuntu programs, but can't find what I'm looking for. My search terms were :
- "program path" Ubuntu
- change "program path"
- "open with" "program path"
I came across a few articles but nothing really seemed to help me. Here's the problem; anytime I try to open a PDF file from my browser, I get either the "Open With..." option or the "Save to..." option.
If I select "Open With..." the default has been changed to Virus Scanner (ClamTK) which I recently installed. Admittedly, I was fooling around with virus scanners to see how they work in Ubuntu. But now my Document Viewer won't open up the PDF files. If I select "Save to..." and save the PDF file(s) to my desktop, and double-click the PDF file from my desktop, then Document Viewer will open up the file. What is the program path for me to change the default program back to Document Viewer???

Atleast I think it's a terminal program. I remember several years ago while using Redhat 7 when working in the terminal it would automatically complete the pathnames and filenames for you. If I was typing in the terminal "cd downloads" but I only typed "cd do" it would automatically complete my command with "cd documents" but if I continued to type "cd dow" it would know that I don't mean the documents folder and it would know the only other folder path with a dow in it is downloads. I'm not sure if my description is 100% accurate but I think you get the idea. Ubuntu doesn't seem to have this by default and I'm curious if I can get it. Is it a terminal program/client I need to use, or just an option? I don't know what it's called so I've had a hard time googling for it!

i got a small problem: i have some old software that used to run under windows.now i run it under wine, and it does just fine. but i cannot make a link to my desktop. when i go to the file in the directory, i choose right mousclick and then make link. then i copy the link to the desktop. but when i run the link from the desktop: i get errors: all bunch of files were not found. It seems like the link is actually the exe file itself ? or that the link execute the exe file at the directory of the place where the link is (that is the desktop directory)

I'm looking to allow sudo for openvpn for a user.
I cannot find the openvpn program path though, i try a 'which openvpn' command and it returns nothing! :S
What is the path? or how to allow a normal user account to run openvpn with sudo?
Solution found:
Working directories for openvpn on debian 8 are:
/etc/openvpn
/usr/sbin/openvpn
To add sudo capability to a guest account, run this with your admin account:
Code: Select allsudo visudo
then add the line, with your guest username substituted:
Code: Select allusername ALL=/etc/openvpn, /usr/sbin/openvpn
tada! guest account now runs only openvpn.

Is it possible to create a symbolic link that include commands for the program?
For instance, I do the following to start the program:
./script -somecommannd
I would like to create a symbolic like that includes "-somecommand"
Is this possible? or would I need to create a second script that executes that command, and link to that script?

I'm trying to compile and link a program to test parapin.
Code:
#include <stdio.h>
#include <stdlib.h>
#include <unistd.h>
#include "parapin.h"
int main(int argc, char *argv[])
{ ...
[Code]....
It looks like the library is found (no error anyway) but the functions in it are not seen. Text at the beginning of libparapin.a includes function names as used in the test program, and parapin.h declares them.

I've been trying to figure out how to use make and makefile to compile and link some .cpp/.h. All i seem to find on google says to read the README for the software. But this is my own created c++ project. Im just looking for a simple makefile for my own .cpp/.h files( about 20 total).
I have tried using 2 different makefile "examples" as a template, but neither worked. I am getting error saying "file1.cpp: no newline character at end of file". or something to that degree.

Can you make a symlink read only? I have about 100 users who all have a .login. They like to modify their .login, which is fine in most cases, but sometimes they do it wrong & it screws up a LOT of the things they are supposed to be doing. Because of this, I'm going to lock down all .logins & I thought, "wouldn't it be nice if we could modify one file & all users would get the modification?" So I'm currently testing having everyone's .login point to a central .login via symlink. It works fine, but it appears that the users can [re]move the link & replace it with a file, thus defeating the purpose. Can I lock down the symlink so the user cannot move or remove the link? FWIW, it must be a symbolic link (as opposed to a hard link) as the file it points to is on an NFS share (not the same file system).

I recently downloaded the program cronometer (calorie counter) and I love it. It is run using a script I wrote (its a java program) that is in the directory of the program files (so the program does not appear under any of the application menus). The script functions only when it is in the destination folder. I did make the script executable. A symbolic link to the file also works but again, only when in the same folder. When I try to make a launcher on the desktop or in CairoDock, citing the script path as the command, nothing happens. I have tried it with both "bash" and "sh" prefixes on the command without success. Any ideas on how I could get this launcher to work?
