Ubuntu :: Make A Link To A .exe File?

May 22, 2011

i got a small problem: i have some old software that used to run under windows.now i run it under wine, and it does just fine. but i cannot make a link to my desktop. when i go to the file in the directory, i choose right mousclick and then make link. then i copy the link to the desktop. but when i run the link from the desktop: i get errors: all bunch of files were not found. It seems like the link is actually the exe file itself ? or that the link execute the exe file at the directory of the place where the link is (that is the desktop directory)

Ubuntu :: Make With Make File Yields Error - /usr/bin/javac: Cannot Execute Binary File

Nov 17, 2010

When I try to compile some Java code on Ubuntu 10.10 (kernel 2.6+) using make and a Makefile.

I get an error indicating that the make utility cannot execute the java compile command (javac).

The error reads: /bin/bash: line 6: .: /usr/local/jdk1.5.0_18/bin/javac: cannot execute binary file

I am executing make as root. I have enabled permissions on all directories in the path /usr/local/jdk1.5.0_18/bin/javac and on javac itself.

I get this error whether using a jdk installed via ubuntu apt-get, or whether I install the jdk myself. And I get it using either Java 1.5 or 1.6

My machine has an 80386 processor. I notice the make utility is built for i686-pc-linux-gnu

However, I can manually compile using javac.

I can compile calling javac from within a bash script.

I can compile using the java compiler gcj from the command line: gcj --main=HelloWorld HelloWorld.java -o HelloWorld.exe

But I cannot compile java code from the makefile. Any reasons why I might be getting this error?

General :: Use Make And Makefile To Compile And Link Some .cpp/.h

Sep 20, 2009

I've been trying to figure out how to use make and makefile to compile and link some .cpp/.h. All i seem to find on google says to read the README for the software. But this is my own created c++ project. Im just looking for a simple makefile for my own .cpp/.h files( about 20 total).

I have tried using 2 different makefile "examples" as a template, but neither worked. I am getting error saying "file1.cpp: no newline character at end of file". or something to that degree.

General :: Make A Symbolic Link Read Only?

Feb 2, 2010

Can you make a symlink read only? I have about 100 users who all have a .login. They like to modify their .login, which is fine in most cases, but sometimes they do it wrong & it screws up a LOT of the things they are supposed to be doing. Because of this, I'm going to lock down all .logins & I thought, "wouldn't it be nice if we could modify one file & all users would get the modification?" So I'm currently testing having everyone's .login point to a central .login via symlink. It works fine, but it appears that the users can [re]move the link & replace it with a file, thus defeating the purpose. Can I lock down the symlink so the user cannot move or remove the link? FWIW, it must be a symbolic link (as opposed to a hard link) as the file it points to is on an NFS share (not the same file system).

Ubuntu Networking :: Mount To Vista Needed For Apache - Symbolic Link Not Allowed Or Link Target Not Accessible

Apr 26, 2010

I have a problem where I'm using Ubuntu linux to mount a Windows Vista machine's USB drive and access it on the web using Apache. I did have the USB drive plugged into the Linux machine directly and that was working via the web. FollowSymLinks is on in httpd.conf

[Code]....

The mount works and I can see the files (see above) from my regular linux user account. If I make a test file in /mnt and soft link to that, I can see it on the web. So it's just the mount to the vista machine that seems to be a problem. It's supposed to be a simple read-only mount and the apache login should (I think) be able to see the same generic root access permissions.

log from apache: [Mon Apr 26 20:39:42 2010] [error] [client 99.99.99.99] Symbolic link not allowed or link target not accessible: /home/user1/pub_html/Music, referer: https://xx.xx.xx/~user1/music.html

The credentials have a login and password that matches a special read-only account on Vista. I can see the files on the system from Linux, but not via the web. As mentioned above, a different link to the same /mnt area works fine via the web. I've tried several different mount options with no success.

Programming :: Link Directories - Symlink Not Updated / Hard Link Not Supported?

Sep 6, 2010

In the ordering of files I keep I need links to directories. Sometimes I even need to move directories to new locations. I have tried using symlinks, but they become dead when I move the directory they point to. I have tried hard links, but I haven't found any Linux file system that would support hard linked directories. How can I achieve that a complex structure of directories (currently with symlinks for directories and hard links for files) keep symlinks live when directories are moved?

- is there any utility that updates symlinks when a directory is moved?

- is there any Linux filesystem that supports hard linked directories?

- is there any good Linux interface to the new NTFS (the only file system I know to support automatically updating directory links, called directory junctions)?

General :: Link Home Directory To Different File-system?

Aug 27, 2009

I'm looking for some advice about how to implement the following functionality in my pet project.

There are two users on my system, user1 and user2. When user1 logs in he can do what he wants etc.. when user2 logs in I want to somehow link the entire file system to another place. In more detail when user2 logs in and does something like ls ~, he should see contents of /home/user1/extra/home/user2/ instead of /home/user2/
and when user2 does ls /usr/bin he should see contents of /home/user1/extra/usr/bin/

Is there a simple way to do this kind of operation. I have looked up the ln command, but I am a little unsure about how to show a completely different file structure to a particular user.

I did play around with ln and found that you can make "soft links" to directories. The problem being how can I link the user2 home directory /home/user2 to something like /home/user1/buffer/home/user2 . can I use something like ln -s /home/user1/buffer/home/user2 /home/user2 .. I guess not. I didn't want to try it as I wasn't sure so as to not hose my system.
