Ubuntu :: Make A 10.4 Image Including Upgrades?

Dec 30, 2010

Im using Ubuntu 10.4 LTS for quite some time now as my primary OS. Till this day i have done numerous upgrades to my system which were offered by Ubuntu community and some we personal needs/preference. I want to create an ISO file that would also have all the upgrades included in case something goes wrong with my computer hardware for instance hard drive failure. I dont want to start fresh from basic 10.4 LTS image and then by going through all the upgrades i have done so far, again.

Debian :: Old Kernel Removing With Safety Including Packages And Image

Oct 22, 2015

I am new and recently almost one month back installed debian linux stable 8.2 came from windows. Today I upgrade my debian stable 8.2 to testing and everything works fine. Just one thing is that I checked kernel and find :

uname -r

4.2.0-1-amd64

dpkg --list | grep linux-image

ii linux-image-3.16.0-4-amd64 3.16.7-ckt11-1+deb8u5 amd64 Linux 3.16 for 64-bit PCs
ii linux-image-4.2.0-1-amd64 4.2.3-2 amd64 Linux 4.2 for 64-bit PCs
ii linux-image-amd64 4.2+68 amd64 Linux for 64-bit PCs (meta-package)

I am first time removing old kernel so cant take risk from searching the solution from google so come here, what and how to remove that includes everything like kernel image and other old kernel files not needed.

One more thing I just realised and saw on details in settings gnome that

Base : Debian GNU/Linux stretch/sid 64-bit

Is this right as it says sid in the line but i just changed my sources.list to testing only and then aptitude upgrade and full-upgrade then just.

Ubuntu Installation :: How To Make Upgrades Correctly

Apr 30, 2010

I want to support Ubuntu, and I want Ubuntu to succeed, but..Each of the recent upgrades has been more painful than the last one, and it seems like the same old problems are persisting. In Koala it was the sound cards, and though I've just started my struggles with the newest release, it is very obvious that the server-load problems are still there. Hey, you Ubuntu people don't have to invent BitTorrent technology, you just need to make it the transparent default.

It seems to me that most of the problem is that Ubuntu's economic model is broken. They need more testing for new features, and the model needs to be funded so that the features which are added are tested thoroughly. I suggest that they need a system where we the users put our money where our mouths are, so to speak. We should be allowed to subscribe to a budget for proposed new features, where those budgets included sufficient testing.

Actually, I used to be a professional programmer, but I don't want to program these days, even to help Ubuntu, because I know just how difficult and stressful it is to do program well. However, I'd be willing to put some money out to help improve Ubuntu--but I also want to know just what I'm buying into.

There are various ways this could be done, but here is a link about one version of charity funding I was thinking of a while back. As it applies here, the Ubuntu foundation would act as the charity brokerage, and we would donate by buying charity shares in proposed features (including MORE testing).

Slackware :: SlackBuild Rebuilds Everything Including The Actual Boot Loader With 'make -j4'?

Apr 1, 2011

I want to update syslinux to version 4.03 on my system, so I took a look at the SlackBuild.

I noticed that the SlackBuild rebuilds everything including the actual boot loader with 'make -j4', but there's a note in the docs directory (distrib.txt) that asks not to do that:

Quote:

For creators of Linux distributions:

Syslinux is a notoriously hard program to debug, since it runs outside of any operating system, and has a tendency to expose BIOS and hardware bugs on various systems. Therefore, I would appreciate if you would resist the temptation of recompiling the Syslinux bootloader itself (ldlinux.asm) if at all possible. If you do that, I will have to refer any bug reports I receive back to the respective distributor.

However, I have no such concerns about recompiling the installer programs, and in fact, with both libc 5 and libc 6 in common use in the Linux world today I understand if you wish to relink the Linux-based installer against your system version of libc. Therefore a special makefile targets "make installer" has been included with the Syslinux distribution, starting with version 1.42.

To rebuild the installer programs *only*, starting from a freshly untarred distribution copy of Syslinux, do:

make clean
make installer

If you want to remove all intermediate files, including the ones obtained from assembling ldlinux.asm and which are included in the distribution, do "make spotless".

I thought I'd report this in case it was unnoticed by Pat and the team. If not I apologize for wasting your time

Ubuntu Installation :: Make A Disk Image?

Oct 27, 2010

I need to make a disk image of Jaunty. Something like Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost in the Windows contingence. I have tried Remastersys and Ghost 4 Linux. The former simply created an ISO file, which is 1/10th of the size of my hard drive and I do not know how to restore my computer using the ISO. The latter seems to be stuck at 0% even after leaving my PC on for 4 hours and verifying that all the settings are correct.

Ubuntu :: Make A Backup Image - But Dual Boot ?

Oct 1, 2010

I have decided to remove Windows from my disk, but I want to keep my current install of Ubuntu.

One possibility that sprang to mind was to make an image out of my Ubuntu install.

Since I dual boot, the disk is numbered "SDA2" (extended) "SDA5" (root) and then there is Swap. (Windows is the first part of the disk)

One question sprang to mind:

If I make an image out of it, what happens to the numbers? Will there be any conflicts? Not to mention the question of which program would be best (and easiest to use, preferably with a GUI, since I want to save time, not learn code).

And if I would go for a binary dump to an external disk (to put it back when the destination disk is empty), would the same problems arise? Or would that bring even more problems, like the issue of the swap partition, which I would have to receate, since it wouldn't fit on the "dump disk"?

This is all because the whole thing sounds very similar to placing the ubuntu partition to the front of the disk, which, as I have been told, is not a good idea.

Ubuntu :: Make A Mirror Image 'clone' Of Flash To Another?

Nov 6, 2010

In the end, with much gnashing of my teeth, I just started over and created a new 4gb flash. And, as one helper told me, it was truly easier a second go around. Not quick, mind you, but easier Now that I've got my flash somewhat stable, I'd like to know how to make a mirror image 'clone' of this flash to another, just like it. Between my Broadcom drivers, nVidea drivers, updates and flash/java, I've gotten pretty protective of this little flash drive! I've head 'dd' will do it, but, as a newb, is their an application or tool that might make the job easier.

Ubuntu :: Make A Disk Image Of 9.10 System - Automatic Wrapper For Windows Drivers

Feb 12, 2010

1. Make a disk image of my 9.10 system (formatted ext3, btw) on my Syology CS407 NAS so I can do a bare metal restore. Why is this a couple of clicks on my Mac and Windows boxes, but so far not easy on Jaunty? Did I miss something?

2. Drivers. Why can't I just have an automatic wrapper for Windows drivers so I can use any printer or scanner, or a simple point and click driver install for native drivers? I have my ethernet connected Brother MFC-7820N, and the Samsung CLP-315 that runs off my CS407 installed and working on my Jaunty, but it was way more work than expected. What is the easy, automatic or point and click way to install drivers?

3. Graphics drivers. I have decent cards in my big boxes, Nvidia GTX 200 series. But when I get kernel updates, I have to uninstall and reinstall the graphics driver. Is there an easy way to keep this working?

4. Is there one flavor of linux distro that has a really consistent standard for user interface? I like to be able move things around, but do like my menus to be consistent (and do I ever hate the MS ribbon!). I've really only tried Ubuntu.

Linux installs have come a long, long way from the old days, and are such a point and click operation that I just wonder what I'm doing wrong. Someone is bound to have sorted these things.
