Ubuntu :: Lucid LTS Unresponsive When Left Unattended?

Jun 10, 2010

I recently upgraded from 8.04 (Hardy) to 10.04 (Lucid). I usually leave my Linux box running as an SSH server (setting on never sleep) while traveling so I can access files, and so on, but since upgrading, I am no longer able to connect via SSH, and upon my return the fan suggests the computer is still running (not sleeping), but the screen is dark and keyboard/mouse cues will not "wake it up".

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Switches To Low-graphics Mode When Left Unattended For Some Specific Time

Jun 26, 2010

When I leave my computer and later return, depending on how long I've been away, I find the screen-saver running, the screen turned off, or the computer suspended, i get the error as specified below on a black screen:

Quote:

Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode.

Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these yourself.

The message gives several options. Despite some experimentals, The only solution which I have found is to reboot and everything becomes fine as before.

Ubuntu :: Left And Right Edges Of Screen Within 2 Pixels Are Unresponsive?

May 11, 2010

i just installed ubuntu studio and it seems to be working fine but i'm having an issue where the both the left and right side edges of my laptop monitor are unresponsive/unclickable for about two pixels all the way down. it's a minor issue that i could probably get used to, but it's particularly annoying when trying to use a scroll bar in firefox or any other window that when maximized would have it just against the right side of the screen. instead of simply swiping the cursor all the way to the right i have to stop just short of the edge in order to use the scroll bar/any other function.

Ubuntu :: Lucid Lynx Becomes Totally Unresponsive Sometimes When Using FireFox?

May 20, 2010

I upgraded to Lucid a few days ago (from Karmic) and although everything went smoothly, I've been having this problem:Every now and then, when I'm on FireFox, the whole computer freezes and is unresponsive. The mouse doesn't work, I can't open the terminal, I can't do anything! My only option is to press the restart button on my laptop.I don't know if this is of any relevance, but I use UbuntuStudio, but have been using the proper Linux Kernel. I only selected the RealTime kernel if I'm working on audio editors, which I haven't done since updating to Lucid.y laptop is an HP pavilion zv5000. It has an ATI 9000/9100 graphics card, about 768 mp of ram, and a P4 3GHz processor.

Ubuntu :: Mouse Intermittently Double Left Clicks / When Single Left Click

Jun 15, 2011

I'm not sure if I should post this question in "hardware & laptops", or "Desktop Environments", because this is a hardware problem on a desktop computer.

Description of Problem:There is another thread that discussed this same problem that I'm having: However that thread is so old that the suggestions in it no longer work in Ubuntu 10.04 and for whatever reason I can not make a reply to that thread.As in the above thread, I've tried other input devices and rebooting the computer and using other USB ports, and my mouse still intermittently double left clicks randomly at times when I've only clicked the left mouse button once and at times and places when it should only produce a single click such as when selecting a drop down menu.

Has any one else had this problem, and does any one have any idea how to fix it or to trouble shoot this a bit more? Please let me know if there is any other information I can provide to further clarify or troubleshoot this issue.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 - System Crashing While Unattended After Updates

Aug 27, 2010

I've been running 10.04 on an old tower for a few weeks now. I've updated the software with no problems. Yesterday I let Update Manager go ahead with installing some updates. Now, the computer will crash while unattended. The screen stays off, and the machine doesn't respond to pings. I've found nothing of use in the syslog. The display going to sleep isn't the trigger, as it will turn off and come back before the issue presents. It seems to occur after 15 minutes or so of idle activity. Also, after an update a couple weeks ago, linux-headers and linux-image won't install cleanly. I'm going to try disabling power saving features to see if it continues occurring.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unattended-upgrades For Non - Security Updates?

May 25, 2010

I've recently installed the unattended-upgrades package on a few Ubuntu 9.04 servers, and it's working great to automatically install security upgrades. However, is there a way to have non-security upgrades automatically installed as well? The README for unattended-upgrades says it'll do security ones only.

My main goal is to have all package upgrades be installed unattended except for kernel and libc upgrades (I want to do those manually on my own time). I guess I could write a script that does 'apt-show-versions -u' to get a list of upgradable packages and then do 'apt-get install' on the packages if their names don't match linux-server, linux-image-server, or libc*, but I was hoping there's an easier way to accomplish this.

I've looked at 'aptitude safe-upgrade -y', but I think that'll install kernel and libc upgrades.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unattended Upgrades And 3rd Party Repos

Jul 14, 2010

I have searched on the internet but didn't manage to find out how to flag 3rd party repositories in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/50unattended-upgrades. It installs all updates from the stock Ubuntu repos but none from 3rd party repositories I later added (e.g. Chromium PPA, Skype, etc.). I understand I have to manually add the lines but I'm not sure what's the format for this. How to do this? Here's how my 50unattended-upgrades file looks like:

Code:
// Automatically upgrade packages from these (origin, archive) pairs
Unattended-Upgrade::Allowed-Origins {
"Ubuntu karmic-security";
"Ubuntu karmic-updates"; };

// List of packages to not update
Unattended-Upgrade::Package-Blacklist {
//"vim";
//"libc6";
//"libc6-dev";
//"libc6-i686"; };

// Send email to this address for problems or packages upgrades. If empty or unset then no email is sent, make sure that you have a working mail setup on your system. The package 'mailx' must be installed or anything that provides /usr/bin/mail.
//Unattended-Upgrade::Mail "root@localhost";
// Automatically reboot *WITHOUT CONFIRMATION* if a
// the file /var/run/reboot-required is found after the upgrade
//Unattended-Upgrade::Automatic-Reboot "false";

Programming :: Implement Left-associative Operators In Parser That Does Not Allow Left Recursion?

Jan 20, 2011

The first is about implementing function calls. The way I currently have it is that functions are called with a C++ std::vector of nodes as the parameters. How would I turn a comma-seperated list of expressions into a C++ vector in the grammar?Second, how do you implement left-associative operators in a parser that does not allow left recursion?

And third, what would be the best internal representation of integers? A C++ int seems simplest, but limited. Using GMP seems more versatile, but I'm afraid it might seriously slow down the interpreter compared to C++ ints.

Ubuntu Servers :: Apache No Longer Starting Unattended After Reboot?

Nov 18, 2010

I have an Ubuntu 10.04.1 AMD64 server running Apache with SSL. In the past, even though I have a passphrase on my key file, I have only needed it if I manually restarted Apache2, never after reboot.

I recently switched from a self-signed cert to one from a CA. I'm not sure if this is what caused it, I also installed a few packages (AWStats, PHPSysInfo and Munin) that all interact with the webserver.

Anyway, I just noticed that now after a reboot Apache starts but doesn't work. I need to kill that process and start a new one with the passphrase (maybe on the console it is prompting me, I mainly use SSH access since the server is headless).

Why did Ubuntu used to 'remember' the passphrase on the self-signed cert but now I need to provide it?

My sever auto-updates so it would be annoying to have this thing go down regularly after a patch that requires a reboot.

I want the updates to install early in the morning, at like 3am or such, so I can reboot the machine when I get up if needs a reboot.I found a few mentions about it, but nothing specifically talking about the time.[URL]..

Can an unattended Kickstart support both IDE (hda) and SCSI (sda)? The goal is to to create a new virtual machine from scratch. What I have works for Parallels in which a new VM defaults to emulate an IDE hard disk. It does not work for VMware Workstation which defaults to emulate a SCSI disk.

The relevant Kickstart section: bootloader --location=mbr --driveorder=hda --append="rhgb quiet"

clearpart --all --initlabel --linux --drives=hda
part /boot --fstype ext3 --size=100 --ondisk=hda
part pv.2 --size=0 --grow --ondisk=hda
volgroup VolGroup00 --pesize=32768 pv.2
logvol / --fstype ext3 --name=LogVol00 --vgname=VolGroup00 --size=1024 --grow
logvol swap --fstype swap --name=LogVol01 --vgname=VolGroup00 --size=1024 --grow --maxsize=2048

Can the Kickstart file be made to not care what drive type is there, or conditionally handle either type?

Debian Configuration :: Manual / Tmp Part Hangs Unattended-upgrades At Shutdown

Dec 3, 2015

Creating a separate /tmp partition manually during install prevents a clean shutdown.

Setup: Debian 8 minimal server configuration (SSH only) using net install as virtual machine on Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V (Gen 2).
1024 MB RAM, 20 GB VHDX, and 1 Processor, EFI boot
Packages installed: openssh-server, sudo, unattended-upgrades, bsd-mailx postfix
Application: IPv6 gateway using 6in4 tunnel

Symptoms: When shutting down the operating system (poweroff or reboot), the message

A start job is running for Unattended-Upgrades ( xx seconds / no limit ).is displayed on the console and will persist for several minutes before eventually timing out and shutting down.I've tried several different configurations. Any configuration that creates /tmp automatically (whole disk with single partition, or disk with separate /home, /var, and /tmp partitions) works fine and shuts down promptly. When I partition the disk manually (512 MB EFI Boot, 17 GB /, 3 GB /var, 512 MB /tmp, and 512+ swap) the problem occurs. I've narrowed it down to just the /tmp partition by testing and comparing various configurations (including/excluding partitions, placing partitions on a separate disk, changing the partition sizes, matching against automatic configurations, etc.).

I have also compared the /etc/fstab and /etc/default/tmpfs configuration file between working and non-working systems and cannot see any meaningful difference.

CentOS 5 Server :: Unattended Reboot With An Encrypted Root File System?

Mar 31, 2009

Centos 5.3 includes Ext4 and improved support for encrypted file systems but it appears to be aimed at laptop/desktop systems, in that a password must be entered at boot time.

Is it possible to have a server with an encrypted root file system boot up without entering a password?

Mandos will do it...
http://wiki.fukt.bsnet.se/wiki/Mandos
...by serving up the password from another server...
http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/mandos
...to a client loaded into the initial RAM disk environment...
http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/mandos-client
...but it's not available on CentOS, and is only in Debian unstable.

Is there a similar (or any) solution for CentOS?

In particular, I'm envisaging encrypted virtual machines being served passwords from their virtual host.

Alternatively, the data that *really* needs to be protected could be encrypted while the system core remains unencrypted. But then the keys to decrypt the file system must be stored in the unencrypted portion, so this is not an effective method.

CentOS 5 :: Scheduled Unattended Backups With Alerts If The Backups Fail

Feb 3, 2011

I've been a DOS/Windows guy for 20 years, and recently became a SW test lab helper. My company uses CentOS for a lot, so I've become familiar with it, but obviously not as comfortable as I am with Windows.

Here's what I have planned:

machine: Core 2 Duo E8400, 8GB DDR2, 60GB SSD OS drive, ATI 4650 video card, other storage is flexible (I have 3 1TB drives and 4 750GB drives around that can be used in this machine.)

uses: HTPC, Network Storage, VMWare server host: SMTP, FTP server, and Web server virtual machines

I've figured out how to do much of this, but I haven't figured out how to do backups in Linux. I've been spoiled with Windows, with the built in backup system so simple to use. I find myself overwhelmed with the array of backup software, and unable to determine which to use. none of them seem to do everything I need them to do, but some come close, I think. I'm hoping someone here can help me out in figuring out which program to use and how to use it.

Here is what I need the backup software to do:
1. scheduled unattended backups, with alerts if the backups fail
2. a weekly full backup with incremental every 12 hours
3. removing the old backups when the new full backup runs, I would prefer to keep 2 weeks of backups, but that's not necessary
4. a GUI would be preferable, since my arthritic fingers don't always do as I want them to do. I typo things a lot, and the label worn off my backspace can attest to that.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Installer Becomes Unresponsive

Mar 25, 2010

I have installed and run Ubuntu on my iMac, now I would like to try Kubuntu but the installer hangs every time inbetween step 1 setting language and step 2 choosing time zone. Sometimes it's while the system clock is being set, sometimes after. It's just the installer that is locked up, I can still move the cursor but because the installer is fullscreen I cannot get out of it, at least not that I know of.

I have made two different desktop CDs from two different ISOs and both gave the same exact behaviour. I think I prefer Kubuntu to Ubuntu but I haven't really been able to give it a try.

On Dell Inspiron 9200, with or without accelerator for NVIDEA graphics. P.S. I would like to give 9.10 a chance. have gedit and browser open (browser with the forum message being edited), then do the following:

1.This example demonstrates one problem (unresponsive single click) Use the System-->Preferences-->Mouse

Click repeatedly on the light bulb at 1 second interval ---> result: often the light does not turn on. Result: it appears that the click event does not complete. I have noticed that a mouse-out will cause the click to complete (specifically as in 2. and 3 after a brief moment (hopefully before the drag and drop icon appears).

2. Click on any icon, submit button, close, etc. takes many tries.

3. Click on any icon, panel button, link, etc. if you linger a moment a floating icon (a drag and drop hand).

4. Scrollbar button and action follow the mouse outside of the scrollbar. The scrollbar sticks - difficult to make scrollbar stop following the mouse.

5. Example, have two visible windows (for example gedit and the browser) From gedit move to browser by click on browser. ---> result takes forever to recognise the focus and click and go to the broser.

6. Unresponsive UI. In browser highlight text in textarea (with difficulty) then chose Copy (slow UI), from this window click on desktop's Applications (takes many clicks to open), from Accessories click on gedit (slow or takes more than one try), paste (speed of paste OK).
