View 1 Repliesi just installed 10.10 on my girls laptop (Acer Aspire 5735z) hoping it would fix the old problem i had with playing real dvd's. it didnt. it keeps saying "Could not read from Resource". when i try with VLC is say "Could not read from file". but if i put in a burned movie, it plays fine. i checked and it has libdvdcss2, libdvdnav4, and libdvdread4 installed. i get the same problems with my laptop (toshiba portege m400 tablet) which runs fedora 13.

i installed F12, and trying to play mp3 and vedio files, Mplayer fails to play all type of vedio formet as awell as mp3. totom is already installes, as well as ibdvdcs... no use till now.

I am running Ubuntu latest revision, but for the last 2 revs I have had the same problem. I have tried removing and uninstalling all media players, codecs and everything with no luck yet. When I play an AVI it brings up a window saying I need the divx or mpeg-4 codec. Click here to download. When I click it, it tells me it can't find the required drivers. The audio plays but no video. I have installed the codecs from what I can tell. I have seen errors for DivX MPEG-4 Version 5, X-VID MPEG-4, and H.264.
View 6 Replies View RelatedVLC Media player has been giving me a few problems and I'm hoping someone here has a fix for this issue.Yesterday I was playing an avi file and my browser, that was also running, froze up in the background. At the same time my video became choppy and started to freeze. I shut down firefox and vlc but when I opened it back up all of my avi files where greyed out. I've posted a request for help on the vlc forums but no one has responded. Has anyone else experienced this problem? It's frustrating because my vlc player will still play dvd's but it won't play any avi files. Oh and I tried the drag and drop option per a suggestion but all I get is sound with no video. Lastly, I should mention that I'm a multi tasker and was also trouble shooting a problem I was having with amarok, which I've since uninstalled. Could amarok have some how screwed up my files? I've even uninstalled an reinstalled vlc but nothing works

I have sounds when the computer start and shutdown and other sounds like incoming mail and stuff just not in amarok or any other media player at all nor on ..... and I've been googling it for the last few days and have found others with simular problems but none running Kubuntu 10.04 so I figured I'd give the solutions they got a try but I just can't get them to work on my computer. I use Linux at work, and want to just plug my ipod and just listen to the tracks, with all the playlists and such. I don't want to sync nothing, I just want to listen to the tracks as if I was using the ipod itself.
Why? Because this way I can use the usb port.
So, I don't want to manage my ipod in Linux, I just want to listen to the tracks on it in Linux, like it was a local library but it's instead in my ipod.
(I've tried gtkpod, it works to show my files, but I can't play, shuffle, etc. It would be interesting to have a complete audio software to handle everything like it was a local library)
I'm trying to play an mp4 video (movie) with my VLC media player but the image is very sequential (it keeps interrupting). I don't know why... I've even tried to play with some other players but I have the same problem.

When I am on Windows and OS X I use iTunes to play my music straight off of my server, no need to copy files over to a local directory. But I have been unable to do this on Kubuntu. I was wondering if anyone noticed that VLC tends to slowly have audio go out of sync during long video files, like a movie. It's hard to notice at first, but eventually you start to notice the audio moves out of sync with the video.
A quick work around to this problem is that I can always quickly hit pause (the audio tends to play for as long as it is out of sync while the video is paused) then quickly hit play.
I know VLC comes with a feature that allows you to adjust the audio for syncing errors, but I find that a bit redundant as the audio will continuously move out of sync as the movie progresses, and thus would require constant maintenance.
I was just wondering if anyone else had this problem and if there were any solutions for it. This problem seems apparent on my iPod touch 4th gen as well and can be fixed with the same work around, however; the syncing issue does NOT exist on my windows vista PC (note: my ubuntu is on a laptop, not my PC)
Sorry for the walls of text: tl;dr? VLC has audio syncing oddities on my laptop running ubuntu but not on my PC running the dreaded vista. Can I fix it without getting massive migraines as my knowledge of linux is very limited?
Edit: If anyone has a recommendation for a better player that supports various media types, I'd be willing to try it. Open source / freeware.

During that I also did some update, but the problem still the same.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI can't play video on any player (vlc, mplayer, totem), the files open, sound works, but video is black. I suspect something went wrong when I upgraded to VLC 1.1.4 using a ppa, I've read that the ffmpeg can screw up and then video just stops. Trying to play m4v, mkv, avi, none work.
Not sure what to do, reinstalling seems like a hassle. Already tried removing vlc and the new ppa, tried removing ffmpeg and reinstalling, removing ubuntu-restricted-extras.
What is the terminal command to shuffle, or randomly play a song on banshee media player? I have already checked 'banshee.
