Jul 17, 2011I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my new Sony Vaio series S but it does not recognize my wireless card (I think). The button is on, but the light does not turn on, and it does not detect the wireless card. The wireless card, an Intel Centrino Advanced -n 6205, does work in ubuntu and when I run the command: lshw -C network, it appears UNCLAIMED, that I think it means the drivers are not in the Ubuntu libraries. What can I do to make it work? I've been struggling but I cannot make it work.

I have tried the cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state method but the directory doesn't exist. I have tried another guide to paste the battery info into this directory but it doesn't allow me to do that and says that the directory doesn't exist, even though I'm trying to make it. I tried it in root nautilus and even on an install of Lubuntu (with a root file manager) but it still failed to budge. I really don't know what to do as I have tried all the guides on the internet that I could find.

Ubuntu Installation :: Vaio Laptop Without Usb Boot Available
Dec 17, 2010I've just acquired a Vaio PCG-FX801 with Phoenix bios version R0121K5.In the boot order, it lists "+Removable Devices", but on expanding the menu, only gives "Legacy Floppy Drives".I only discovered this after unsuccessfully trying to boot from a stick with the 10.10 netbook iso on it.Is it possible to get round this,or should I put the iso on a cd,or should I download the desktop iso onto a cd, and use that? I want to try it out on this laptop before installing it.

Mar 21, 2010I am having problems with the brightness control on my sony vaio laptop, at virst when i upgraded the driver for the VGA card the whole screen went blank, I had to port a bin file from windows and write my own EDID file to get it to work (nVidia GT 230M), but I am having problems with the brightness, although ubuntu does read the input from the keys (FN+...), the brightness refuses to change, adding the brightness applet to the taskbar does not work either. I really need to be able to change my brightness because the battery usage is off the charts.

Feb 24, 2010I successfully before install Ubuntu on my last laptop along with windows vista and it was rather easy because ubuntu allowed me to partition the disk so simply. However, on my vaio, my whole hard disk is partition and there is no unallocated space. It will not allow me to partition the disk and when I boot up the ubuntu live cd to install, the partitioner doesn't look the same and I'm hesitant to make any changes because I'm afraid I'm going to damage my data. I have a 500GB HDD in which I want to use just 60GB for Ubuntu and the rest for Windows 7. Also, I'm running 64-bit Windows if that matters at all.

Oct 23, 2010Recently I install ubuntu 10.10 on my Sony Vaio laptop. After the CD boot I always got a black screen, after a week i figured that there's nothing wrong, it's just the screen doesnt show up on my laptop's screen. So I use an external monitor and It showed up as normal.
But I need to have it show up on my laptop's screen. I tried to use "additional driver" to activate latest Nvidia driver but after that even my external monitor doesnt work too. Latest driver doesnt work properly i guess. I did try to install older driver version manually but after I turned of gdm, install driver and reboot, my ubuntu always starts with tty1 command terminal. tried ctrl+alt+7 but it stucked at (checking battery state), startx doesnt help me return to graphical screen too.
I got help from a moderator here but the best result so far is to edit my /etc/default/grub. Change
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nomodeset"
Sudo update-grub
after the reboot I have it shows up on my laptop's screen. But it seems low-bit color,a bit grand to me(compared to external monitor, both w/o driver). Anw i checked system/preference>monitor . It showed up that my monitor:unknown. I can't choose other resolutions, refresh rate = 0.
I always know its my widescreen is the problem. I have had a lot of problems dealing wgames/application (on windows) can't work on 16:9 mode. install a stable Nvidia driver

OpenSUSE Install :: Installing 11.2 On Old Sony Vaio Laptop?
Feb 3, 2010I tried to installed OpenSUSE 11.2 "i586" on an older Sony Vaio laptop (model PCG-XG9) with 20 GB HD and 128 or 256 MB RAM. There is no ethernet port, but I have a PCMCIA WLAN card "Cabetron RoamAbout 11 Mbit/s", which should work perfectly with any Linux. The computer had Win98 on it originally (which, of course, after all installation attempts is now destroyed). The problem is that I cannot install to the end at all - no matter what I try:
1) Having the disk as a single FAT partition (made by a Win98 installation CD), it appears that the installer cannot create the correct partitions needed for Linux.
2) Having deleted the DOS partition with FDISK from Windows98 - which is like buying a completely new, unformatted HD from a store. But again, it cannot automatically set the partitions...
Is there a manual / instruction page somewhere how I should partition the disk manually (how to do it, and what sizes are recommended for each partition)?

Hardware :: Nvidia GeForce 8400 GS Not Recognized?
Mar 17, 2011I am trying to build a linux box from an old Dell Optiplex GX240 that I got for free. I have gone out and bought a Sparkle Nvidia GsForce 8400 GS PCI video card for it but am having trouble getting it installed properly. It seems that the card is not recognized by the computer. The command lspci shows no signs of the new video card. I have installed the lastest Nvidia driver (huge PITA) but as expected this did not change the fact that the computer cannot see the new card. The card is rated for 350W and I have a 500W power supply so I should be good there. I have also changed the BIOS settings to auto detect the video card instead of just the stock one. Is my card simply incompatible with my motherboard or are there ways to get this card to work?

Jan 7, 2010I have been having an unusually fraught time trying to installing Linux on a new box (Dell Precision 5500, Nvidia FX 3800 graphics), x64_86. After following Leigh123Linux's recommended method for disabling Nouveau, I was able to verify that the nvidia module was loaded, Nouveau was not, but the system nevertheless hung at boot. As a last resort I downgraded the graphics card, replacing the FX3800 with an FX1800, et voila!, the drivers found the card and all was it should be, with no changes to the system configuration. This is a bit mysterious as the FX 3800 is purportedly a supported card. The only sign that anything may have been amiss during the installation was the missing firmware warnings:
W: Possible missing firmware aic94xx-seq.fw for module aic94xx.ko
W: Possible missing firmware ql8100_fw.bin for module qla2xxx.ko
However, it's not clear that this is of any consequence. For now, my FX 3800 is back in its anti-static bag for the foreseeable future..
Debian Hardware :: WiFi Card Not Recognized (Laptop HP 430 G2)
Sep 12, 2014I'm a brand new user of Debian, and I just bought a (too much?) new laptop, the HP 430 G2. It seems to work great for almost everything, except that I don't have any wifi available.
I tried so many different things (without any success) that it would be hard to resume. But for now, all I have is a new installation (to avoid parasite installations of weird things), and a kernel updated to 3.16. I don't know if it's useful though...

The first element I notice is that I don't have the line with "Kernel driver in use...". Which seems to indicate that there's a problem with the kernel module (is that right?). But I don't know how to fix it...
The other thing that puzzles me with these last two commands is that according to this page, my wifi card is a Broadcom BCM43142. But it's not the result I get with the lspci command.
Anyway, I'm really lost, I don't know what to do, what to check, what to install. I don't want to go by random, testing all the different solutions I see on the web blindely. This is the reason why I ask it here.

Nov 30, 2015I am running Wheezy 7.9 32 bit, with the kernel Linux 3.2.0-4-686-pae, and Gnome 3.4.2 on an Intel Pentium CPU G3420 @ 3.2 GHz. I installed a new printer in August, an HP Officejet 7612 all-in-one printer/scanner/copier, and it worked perfectly as both a printer and a scanner first time, despite not being listed on the supported list in SANE. Two weeks ago, I got a general software update notification, and did the update. Now the scanner is not recognised. The printer still works fine as a printer, but when using Simple-scan, I get the error message "No scanners detected. Please check your scanner is connected and powered on". I have had a look round on Google, and all the suggestions made do not work.
I tried the suggestion to add myself to the scanner users list on my PC which made no difference (even though the scanner previously worked without my being added to the scanner users list).
I have deleted the printer and re-installed it using CUPS, but that still has no effect. I tried re-installing HPLIP also to no avail, and I have now lost the toolbox on the drop down menu under <Applications> <Accessories> <HP Toolbox>, as when I click on it, nothing happens.
It would seem that something in the update has messed up Simple-scan. Looking at the dpkg log (is this the right thing to look at?) for the date of the update, I cannot find anything which directly involved SANE, so I think that it might be something else which has affected SANE. How I can find out which update did the damage? I don't normally do anything except accept recommended updates, so I am a bit lost as to what to do.

Jun 9, 2010I am looking to buy a laptop for my college years, so I would like to buy one that will serve me many years ahead. Currently the only laptop I have found is the System76 Serval laptop, but they do not ship to Europe.
Another laptops I have found are the Toshiba A505 series, but they are not currently supported by the latest version of Ubuntu.
I anyone knows of a good laptop (must have Corei7 processor and Nvidia/ATI powerful card fully supported by the proprietray drivers), please share your knowledge here.

Ubuntu :: Laptop Speakers Ok / But External Speakers Not Recognized
Feb 17, 2010I recently installed Kubuntu 9.04 Jaunty on my buddy's laptop. It's working alright, except when we try to plug the external computer speakers into the sound jack in the front, there is no change; it keeps playing through the onboard speakers. My friend and I are getting pretty frustrated because we use those speakers to watch movies with, and the onboard speakers aren't sufficient. If I need to provide any other info, let me know and I'll do so.

Mar 7, 2010I have an Asus UL80vt laptop. This laptop has an integrated (Intel) as well as a discrete (Nvidia 210m) graphics card.
I want to use the nvidia proprietary drivers because from what I understand, it's the easiest way to set up dual monitors (I have an external monitor). I installed the latest nvidia driver: NVIDIA-Linux-x86-190.53. When I try to run the NVidia X Server Settings GUI, it tells me that "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server. "
I checked out my xorg.conf and changed the device driver to 'nvidia' instead of 'nv'. Curiously, when I run nvidia-xconfig, it changes the intel device to 'nvidia' which is a problem. So i skipped running that and just stuck with my xorg.conf. When I run startx, I get a message saying "failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device PCI:1:0:0".
I've combed through multiple forums which state different kinds of solutions and I've tried different kernel options such as 'vmalloc=512m' or 'noapic' to no avail.
