I'm trying to make a custom livecd for karmic with remastersys for a ready out of the box config and I cannot figure out how to set the following defaults:
windows decoration (kwin)
style
splash (ksplash)
login (kdm)
cursor (mouse theme)
wallpaper
The guides I searched for or only for kde3.5 I can't find any for kde4
I finally have a working nautilus after weeks experiencing a seg fault caused by a dependency problem which I have only now managed to resolve.
It came right after doing this:

gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/nautilus
I then removed nautilus-elementary ppa and downgraded the nautilus-data.
Problem is the nautilus I get is extremely minimal -- really just a window -- which insists on opening new windows whenever I click on a folder.

I've tried removing .nautilus on several occasions.
What are the default settings?
Is there a more convenient way of editing nautilus?
Striks me this has something to do with settings gconf. I'm going to play around and see if any of them fix this creature.
I installed the Elegant Gnome theme/package and I uninstalled it after about a week of use. Even after reverting back to the ambiance theme, or other themes, I've noticed that some elements of the Elegant Gnome theme have remained (e.g. the panel color and icons in Chrome or after right clicking and the system font).Is there a way to restore the Gnome defaults or Ubuntu system defaults so that everything is as it should be?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI basically want to transfer firefox settings from one machine to another (or from one user to another) which includes some extensions. Instead of running the browser and installing the extension manually, I just want to copy and paste the relevant files.
I noticed that the folder name where the 'extensions' folder is present is different for different users. And just copying to that folder does not work. code...
I'm guessing there are other configuration files that I need to modify. Can someone tell me right way to go about this?
Does ubuntu server automatically backup files? How can i get to them?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm interested to hear what config/settings files - or whole folders - you've managed to simply copy over from your previous installation and have working in the new. This can be either for specific programs or for parts of the system, but I suppose most of what people would find useful is getting some of their programs back to how they had them. These can be individual files or whole folders, but if there is a settings folder for a program but only one of the files is actually worth copying, just mention the one file and what it does. Also interested in hearing from KDE and Xfce users, for the benefit of those of us who have multiple desktop environments in the same system. (Besides, even those with only Gnome will use some of the great KDE apps like Amarok and K3b).
Here are my contributions:
(~/ denotes your home folder; any subfolders starting with a period [.] are hidden files or folders)
~/.cache/rhythmbox/covers (the folder containing all your album cover art displayed in Rhythmbox)
~/.gnome2/nautilus-scripts (any scripts you added to Nautilus will be in this folder)
~/.lyrics (the folder containing all your song lyrics displayed in Rhythmbox)
~/.local/share/rhythmbox/rhythmdb.xml (Rhythmbox's database file; if you were forced to edit this because of some incorrectly displayed tags, don't forget to copy it over).

I know it is possible to boot Ubuntu Live from a Flash drive. But it just boots up and runs like its a CD. When you shut down the computer, the changes are all lost.
Is there any way to use the flash drive as a Hard Drive? like install Ubuntu on the flash drive and have the flash drive act as a hard drive - so that if I boot with the flash drive in the computer I can boot of of the flash drive and it would act as a hard drive?
Could I just setup Ubuntu and select the flash drive as the install directory? would that accomplish this?
I am trying to copy my hidden files in /home/myusername to another partition. I have also edited /etc/fstab to reflect the change. After reboot, when kdm appears and I try to log into kde, the latter complains that it has no write permissions to write to /home!
The commands I used, are:

Does anyone know what may be wrong. I am having the impression that it may be because I was root when I used cp and it messed some file permissions, but should it?
I run Ubuntu 9.04 on with proprietary NVidia driver 180.44.When I change anything in the nvidia-settings, e.g. screen resolution, brightness, second screen etc, everything works fine - except for the fact that I can't play any video files in any player. Sound is there, players don't display any error messages, but the image is black. Flash video within browsers is fine, though.Things go back to normal with the new settings kept after restarting X. However, having to restart X and lose my desktop set up every time when I just want to connect my laptop to my office screen is highly inconvenient.Is this a bug or expected behaviour that I have to live with?

View 2 Replies View Relatedlately I'm experiencing a few issues with Firefox 5.0 on my Ubuntu 11.04 installation. First of all, when I try to open pdf files, I often get a black page and I've to try to reload it many times before I can effectively read the pdf (even for small-size ones).
Secondly Firefox doesn't record settings about my preferred applications. If, for example, I want a file .torrent to be opened by deluge I have to enter manually /usr/bin/deluge because by default it would be opened by gedit. No matter if I select "use as default application" the next time the issue will be present again.
everytime I restart my laptop (running Ubuntu 11.04) my unity launcher reverts back to default! I have to reorganize and remove and add the apps I want on the unity bar/launchpad.

Imagine my surprise when:On a black screen, there was a new (small) window on the left and a (small) meaningless stick figure on the right at the bottom of the screen, and after a while I got the error window entitled:

Since when is installation (with no user interaction) a default when using a (Live)CD ISO image of any Ubuntu RC or otherwise?My only purpose was to boot up into the Live CD environment - but that was not only not presented as an option (normally there is a 30 second countdown) and the usual default is to boot up into the Live CD environment.This was not the case with the RC! Why not?
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and after recently changing a theme, all icons are stuck as GNOME defaults.I read some threads where it's only the folder icon that's stuck but as it is every single icon then I decided I'd best just ask.
View 8 Replies View RelatedSo when I install 10.04 LTS server with all the defaults. ie root parted with lvm, I get a grub error. Apparently the install script at the end of the installation does not take into account that I might install ubuntu on a different drive.
Without LVM, I can get it to work. If I drop down to shell and mount the root drive, then run:
grub-install --root-directory=/ /dev/sdc And all is good. But I want LVM on my boot drive. Does anybody out there know of an easy way of doing this? This really should be a bug. But I'm too much a noob to know where to issue this.
I am on 10.4 with a Dell Notebook (E6400). I use it mostly with a USB mouse. Everything worked fine for about 2 months. Then I shutdown, unplugged the mouse, restarted without the mouse, and my trackpad is broken. It works a little, but text fields and some apps capture the mouse events and won't let go. For instance, the cursor gets stuck in a text field and there is no way (keyboard or mouse) to get out.
I've tried several times to fix this and I cannot. If I boot from a LiveCD then everything works fine. My theory is that the mouse configuration files somehow got corrupted in my plugging/unplugging of the external mouse. How can I reset the mouse to factory defaults? Are there a set of files I can copy over from the live CD?I tried to delete and recreate my xorg.conf file and this did not work either.
How can i set the themes and screensavers to default? like, i have a netbook, and installed a LOT of themes, and now it is slowing down. how do i go about uninstalling?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI tried to set up my first dual boot, Ubuntu 10.04 already on drive, added Dream Linux 4 beta 6.3. Now the default is Dream Linux, and the boot option flies past so fast that if you don't have your finger on the down arrow and press immediatly when the screen flashes, you go to Dream. I did a search that said to run grub-mkconfig and add the second os to the file. I got

Another thread said to use chroot, but no instructions. I am not knowledgable in command line, and am unsure how to proceed. What I want to accomplish is Ubuntu as the default OS, and more time to decide before the default is loaded.
I have a dual monitor setup with the primary on the left and the secondary on the right. When the login screen comes up after a reboot for instance, the login options such as user selection are on the secondary (right) monitor. How can I change this?

View 3 Replies View RelatedSo I just had gotten to know the old Grub a little when I upgraded Ubuntu to find the new Grub, which I barely understand at all! My use of Ubuntu is mostly for learning and recreational as my bread and butter is working on people's messed up Windoze systems, since that is where the work is. Naturally I've got to use and work with Windoze to know how to fix it and keep it running cleanly, but Ubuntu was the first Linux I found that to me seems like something that could be potentially be embraced by "non geeks". I have as yet to get anyone to try it; it is all about keeping up with the Joneses and having what they have. There is also that old pervasive myth that you get what you pay for, which with computers, I find the opposite is so often true, that the good stuff is mostly free.
In any case I dabble a lot with Ubuntu for fun and personal knowledge, but since I put 10 on I had only Windoze 7 on my machine at the time. It picked it up and I purposely installed Grub to my Ubuntu drive (I used separate physical drives, so that if you removed the Ubuntu drive, 7 would boot as if Grub and Linux were never on the machine and that is the way I like it since I tinker a lot.). The trouble is that I need Win 7 to be the default and I don't know how to do that with Grub 2 (is it 2?) I used to know with the old one. Also, I have since added a 160GB PATA drive with XP on it, since so much of the help I am asked to give over the phone is with XP and I am not one who can talk others through things unless I can see it myself. Plus there are some things I do that just plain old work best with XP. So I also need to add XP to my boot menu, and it is, on a separate physical drive as well, and I wanted that the same too; if you made the XP drive the priority boot device it will boot XP as if it was the only OS on the machine.
What the ideal for me would be is to have the Ubuntu drive as the one it boots from, Windoze 7 to be the default OS, and XP to be on the menu too. I have been able in all of the time with Ubuntu and Linux in general to find precious little info on how to do things with multiple physical drives. It seems to be taken for granted that the only way people multi boot is with separate partitions on a single physical drive
I have set up an HP 5M networked printer. The test page works fine, and the defaults are all set correctly. But when I try to print from my own java programs, the paper size is set to letter, and the margins are all set to 2.54 mm. I can change the paper size to A4 (but I have to do it EVERY time). And the margins won't even let me change them. I type in 0, click in the next field, and the value changes straight back to 2.54. It has been this way for at least the last two releases of Ubuntu.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI set up my interfaces file just fine on one of my computers and everything works. On my desktop its a no go. This is what I've done. I set my interfaces file to look like this

Then I uninstalled network manager (sudo apt-get remove network-manager-gnome). Now I can restart my computer, but I do NOT get a static IP of 112, instead I get the last working dhcp given address (.104). It connects and I get internet using .104.
BUT, if I run

sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
then it DOES work. It changes to my address .112 and the internet works. But when I get that I get an error SIOCDELRT: No such process found (or something similar to that). But after it sits, it still finished with [OK] and my internet works. Clearly something is amiss though. Because it doesn't go to the static IP imediately. I even tried setting up a rcS.d link to a file with that networking restart command, but still no go. It starts with the .101 IP.
On Ubuntu 11.04, I have a need to use gnome-open from another application to open files in assigned applications. I think I understand how mime types are given in /usr/share/mime. I understand how default application associations are done in /usr/share/gnome/applications/defaults.list. I understand how update-desktop-database is used to maintain defaults.list. I know how to specify file associations (open with) from Nautilus. I understand how ~/.local/share/applications and ~/.local/share/mime override the system settings. I get all that.
What I don't understand is why the command gnome-open or double-clicking a file in nautilus, for certain file types (e.g. PDF), generates an error message:

The occurrences of application/pdf in the different applicable files all point to evince as the associated application.
By the way, mimeopen does work. What is the relationship between mimeopen and gnome-open? Manual pages for these commands are not helpful in understanding their operation.
In addition, I might throw in one other question. In the various .desktop files, I see that some application commands are enclosed in single quotes, but never the file name identifier, %f. If dealing with file/directory names with spaces in them, it would seem that quoting the '%f' would be important.
I installed sqeeze on a netbook. Having no optical drive, I created a usb install disk with unetbootin on a laptop running Squeeze stable and the "Debian 6.0.1a DVD 1" iso. Much to my suprise it installed KDE. I expected, and wanted, Gnome. At the tasksel section I checked off "Graphical Desktop Env", "Laptop", and "Standard Sysytem Utilities". I found a similar post regarding this: viewtopic.php?f=17&t=60040 But in this case the OP installed with a netinstall iso and concluded a faulty mirror was the cause. This doesn't make sense in my case as I was using a DVD image which contains, afaik, Gnome, XFCE, and KDE
There surely must be a way to explicitly choose which desktop env. one wants installed. I realize this can be done by doing a base install and using apt-get; but I'm thinking there must be a simpler way using the installer. I tried the "Expert" install and only saw the generic "Graphical Desktop" option again. I figure I must be missing something somewhere. Also, can I get apt-get to recognize my unetbootin stick as a source to fetch from? I tried apt-cdrom and different entries in sources.list but I can't figure it out. It seems wasteful to me to download hundreds of MBs of packages from a mirror when I have them locally.
While making sure that vmware used runlevel 5, I did not realize to simply check/uncheck radial buttons at bottom of frame because I first saw numbers across the top of the frame; checking, unchecking these seems to apply run levels to all services; since I may have disrupted default settings for some services, I am not sure I did this, but I may have done so before I saw what I should have done, two questions:
(1) Does it matter?
(2) How would I restore defaults with re-installing OS?
