Server :: Timed Out While Receiving The Initial Server Greeting
Apr 30, 2009
I have setup a Postfix system under Ubuntu server and everything works fine but I have seen 2 mails that stayed queued deferred in my mailqueue.
They can't be send because I received this :
Other mails are going out but these two stay there. Maybe someone could guide me where to change or look for solving this problem. I have a FQDN but do not have a static IP from where I run this mailserver.

Linux printing appeared to be working fine up until yesterday. Today typing lpq gives the following: lpq Printer 'sdst@other.domain' - cannot open connection - Connection timed out Make sure LPD server is running on the server
The /etc/cups/printers.conf file is properly set, the printers appear in localhost:631 and they are printing test pages. However, all command line print commands seem to be trying to print to sdst@other.domain I don't know why printers.conf is being ignored and why and how sdst@other.domain was added. Seems like it might have been auto-discovered?
# dit: sdst@other.domain was mentioned in /usr/local/etc/lpd.conf I'm not sure why lpd.conf is being used instead of /etc/cups/printers.conf

On a server end emails are going out fine but on client side its not working with Deffered message in log. I tried to find any solution online but couldnt get any exact info to sort out this issue. On server side there is a entry of client machine in /etc/mail/access and I created access.db as well with make hash command. Is there something on server end that is not responding? or if I am doing something wrong please point out.

I have a box running, within this box I serve approx 18 sites. Starting few months ago. the memory usage seems to climbs up everyday. I've check my cron, and I don't have any cron that runs everyday (but hourly cron that only did checking external server's availability via wget). The only new thing that I've add was a backup script to dump mysql database, which occurs weekly. (I can post it's script if needed).
Here is my weekly memory chart [url]
And lately things are getting worse, everytime I did this:
Code:
At least one of my site returns with timeout. When I visit the site using my browser, the site is actually reachable but it takes about 20 seconds to load (my wget use timeout 10 seconds so it will surely returns with timeout). Each time one or two sites downs randomly. But about two-three small sites dominates - their chance to get slowed seems to be higher than the rest 15 sites.
Is there any way I can detect the problem? I really don't have any idea...
My box runs on CentOS release 5.4 (Final)

I have 2 different networks :the first one is gateway machine (eth0), and the second is a private machine (eth1). So, I've configured the iptables and forwarding stuff and when I try to ping [url]..... on the gateway machine, it works, while it doesn't work on the private network. Note: I am using VmWare 7, CentOS 5.
I could say that the problem in DNS:because when I use this command in the private network machine: [url]...., it says connection timed out; no servers could be reached ,while in the public one, it works properly.....

I am setting up a new email server by following the Flurdy guide. I can send but I can't receive. I can telnet in with both the IP address & telnet mail.domain.com 25 I'm not using or loading shorewall because I will be relying on the firewall that is in the router. I have been following the test section of the flurdy tutorial. I am tailing the mail.log file and only see the status as being different from the example
"status=bounced (mail for domain.com loops back to myself)"
It seems like it is getting through to the server but then getting rejected.

I have followed the guide for "The Perfect Server - Debian Lenny (Debian 5.0) With BIND & Dovecot [ISPConfig 3]" and all is well, except.
I can send mail (to GMail) from commandline. I can send mail (to GMail) from any of the domains configured in ISPConfig3 through SquirrelMail (how ever terrible that looks, but functions) or IMAP/POP.
but....
I can't receive mail (from GMail) on any of the domains configured in ISPConfig3 in SquirrelMail or IMAP/POP.
I have my domains configured with proper MX records (just like I have them configured at work). I have all ports (80, 143, 110, 25, 22, etc) forwarded on my router that are needed.
I can Telnet to localhost and all checks are fine. I can send and receive from and to local domains on the same server, which makes sense. but
I can't Telnet from any external server to my server behind NAT.
Conclusion:
I figured it MUST be a network/port-forwarding problem as the external Telnet requests fails to my machine on port 25.
Tested my router if it would let met communicate through port 25 and it would.
So it must be my ISP, as I read in different posts.
Question:
Maybe I'm a n00b, but in all other posts the problems were with receiving AND sending.
My ISP responded that port 25 is blocked because of spam issues.
But I can mail (and even spam if I would like to) to external domains while I didn't do anything weird to make that happen.
The only thing I wish for is to receive mails and if you'd ask me, port 25 would be solely for outgoing mails, not for incoming mail deliveries throught MX?
An ISP surely wouldn't disable their customers in having a mail-server for incoming mails, as long as they would send out through their own smtp server to make sure they wouldn't spam the world?

I've been using synergy on Ubuntu 9.04 and windows xp.Synergy 1.3.1 on both machines. My problem is that the server keeps cutting out. It seems to happen a lot when I watch flash videos on the server machine (ubuntu). This is what the server side looks like:
Code:
NOTE: synergys.cpp,500: started server
INFO: CServer.cpp,1141: screen "server" shape changed
NOTE: CClientListener.cpp,127: accepted client connection
[code]....
I dont think I usually get disconnected when doing other tasks. Mostly only when watching flash videos. Sometimes it doesnt automatically reconnect, and I have to kill synergys and restart it.

You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server.
Last night did a shutdown -h +120 which I have done regularly without problems. Only difference was there were some updates to go on which I said Restart later to.
Now my NVIDIA driver is screwed - as in I can't get my dual screens working. I have tried: sudo nvidia-config as suggested but not sure what it means by restart X server - PC restarted? No difference.

The fix, according to https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=596775 is to change

I made the change and ran rkhunter again. No more error. I know everyone was wondering about this.

I have configured postfix to send/receive mail from/to for two domains we manage. [URL] and [URL] Most of the cases there is no issue sending out or receiving emails. However, a few users of domainY.com complained that their senders were not able to sent them email. after much investigation, we started thinking that the mailserver failed to send us email may the failing on doing a SMTP Banner issue.
Is there anyone who knows how to deal with this SMTP banner issue with multiple domain. We want different SMTP banner when doing EHLO on different server.

One of our postfix servers is for sending/receiving internal emails only. When a user entered a wrong recipient address, it will take almost an hour for the user to get the "Recipient address rejected" email. What can be done to let the user get the "Recipient address rejected" email quickier.

I have a small internal network with about 8 or so servers or workstations. My mail server is getting spammed from all over to the root and other administrative accounts. I also get valid email sent to the root and administrative accounts from within my local network. Is there a way to block all email coming from outside my local network while still receiving it inside the local network to these specific accounts?

I've been trying to ssh out of my home network to school computers and I keep getting:
ssh: connect to host sage.math.washington.edu port 22: Connection timed out
I've tried this on my machine (running Ubuntu 10.04) and on a windows 7 machine (using putty). I have been successful ssh'ing to this machine using either of the laptops from every other network I've tried, so I'm pretty sure it's something about my home network.

I have an old Brooktrout ISDN fax card on BRI used mostly for receiving faxes. It works with windows fax server software which sends faxes to different e-mail boxes according to telephone number on which fax was send.
Since card is getting rather old and I don particulary like server software I wonder has anyone got any practice with linux fax servers. What I need is ISDN fax card and software which is able to save fax as a picture to file and somehow retain telephone number (filename or directory name). Sending picture by email is than trivial task.

I have my own internal bind9 server, for my local domain, and I forward internal requests for public domains to OpenDNS servers. This server is not in a DMZ, but is instead behind an dynamic NAT. I do not accept queries from the public network, only responses. I understand that DNS is primarilly a UDP protocol, so it can't pass through a stateful/nat. without a firewall allow.
I've done a little reading and learned that bind9 does not run 53 <-> 53 anymore (is now >1024 <-> 53), and modified my config so it works like bind4 did, but I am concerned that this makes me less secure. additionally, I'd really rather not have a completely open 53 rule, but it seems that if I constrain 53 traffic to my known forwarders, it interfers with some of my network services like transmission. so, what firewall rules would you guys recommend for recieving forwarded DNS query responses to my server?

I messed up the first installation of Fedora on my server. My setup is as follows: Fedora and Gnome - NFS system, No dual boot (Windows or anything) Fedora ISO DVD downloaded No kickstart or other tools. how to set this up, from the time I insert the disk and have it boot up (configged already to boot from it). I know how to wipe it clean at intall time. Is that the root directory? And, is /boot the actual boot directory? I'm just having a hard time uderstanding that. As I said, I just want a quick itemized list, step 1, step 2, etc, from partitioning, creating file system, mounting, etc. in the right order.
