Feb 26, 2010
trying to install Ns2 simulator on ubuntu 9, when I try to install the build-essential package ( the first step before the install of the Ns2, I get error that requires a depending on package (g++) after , then I tried to install the g++ package, it also give another required package, .... after getting all install, and try to install the build-essential package, I got another error message "broken package" what can the reason be!!, noticing that the same versions been tested and been installed before with friends! and no such error !!
I was having a problem with a fresh 11.04 install and the VPN software I use for work. I found the fix was to upgrade the software, so I downloaded an RPM, converted it to .deb and installed it via dpkg. The install worked and the VPN software now works, but Package Manager says I have a broken package and wants to 'upgrade' to the older broken one. How can I fix this without breaking my VPN SW again?
I need to install "xorg-dev" package as a prerequisite for one program but when I try
sudo apt-get install xorg-dev it gives me the following errors
Quote:
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming.
Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that the package is simply not installable and a bug report against that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
And my /etc/apt/sources.list files looks like following:

And I have upgraded my system from ubuntu 7.? to 8.04 .
i'm running debian lenny - latest stable i have recently installed smartcam (mobile phone as webcam over bluetooth) from .deb package , get errors of unmet dependency , but application works like a charm, unfortunately broken dependences block my aptitude , i cant fix them either as latest stable use older versions of dependences even in backports... how do i mark smartcam package as not broken and release my apt?
Still I am asked to package a war file as an RPM package. That is an unusual RPM packaging(To me). If you guys could guide me I have a war file inside a folder, that folder is inside a tar file as a SOURCE for RPM package. The structure is like below.
[Code]...
I simply want that the war file from sources is transferred to the web app of my tomcat server through RPM. I try to package it as an RPM, but its always giving me errors in %build stage. When I try to remove %build from stage from the spec file, then it says command missing.
My system details are: SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 (x86_64) VERSION = 10 PATCHLEVEL = 1 LSB_VERSION="core-2.0-noarch:core-3.0-noarch:core-2.0-x86_64:core-3.0-x86_64"
I'm running UNR 10.04 on a Samsung NC10.Every thing has been working great for the last few weeks since I downloaded and installed - almost everything worked great out of the box! Only 'problem' I was having was pants flash performance but that's a bit of a given I guess. However, this afternoon I did an update + upgrade, then did the required restart.Booted fine to login screen, but it then took a looong time for any thing to happen - before any panels/UNR interface appear, I get 3 errors, one after another. They are:
1. Could not update ICEauthority file /home/matt/.ICEauthority 2. Problem with configuration server /usr/lib/libgconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256 3. Nautilus could not create the following required folders /home/matt/Desktop, /home/matt/.nautilus
(I think the third one asked me to create the folders myself and then give it correct permission but not certain)I tried loging into standard Gnome desktop, same errors, same problem. Same with the gnome safe thing. After a while however, I do get one panel, in the top left corner - rather than stretching full width, it's about 2 inches across. On it are some buttons (mail, sound, chat, power, time) but not some that should be (guake, wireless etc)I brought up the run dialogue (Alt + F2) and tried a variety of programs but nothing happened with any (tried firefox, chromium, xchat, terminal)
I updated my Xubuntu 10.04 yesterday and some packages had errors on install. I think I have tracked it down to python2.6 install. I ran apt-get install mousepad just to see the errors and this is part of what it returned:

Then, I checked where it said the missing files were and found several broken symlinks like this: lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 33 2010-08-09 20:34 xapian.py -> ../../../share/pyshared/xapian.py All of the broken symlinks need another ../ on the front. I was considering creating a script that will read the broken symlinks, add another ../ on the front of the target and then change the symlink target to that address.
I have a computer with 128 ko of RAM (a very old one). I installed yesterday ubuntu 8 because ubuntu 9 requires 512 ko of RAM and was very slow. Now, I have problems to update packages and to install every thing. I changed the sources.list because it seems that links are no more available according to the error messages. (I have put many adresses for ubuntu 9 because I think the kernel is the same not as the kernel for ubuntu 10). But new problems have occurred like "broken dependencies". Now I want to correct, and I don't know how? I'm still a beginner with this OS.
After Upgrade to natty everything went well except my package manager is now broken and I keep going around in circles; Update manager gives me a list of six updates that are downloaded but not installed. When I try to install, It returns;
I have a problem when installing this package through synaptic package manager. this is :
libpng12-dev the error is: W: Failed to fetch http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/po...tu2.1_i386.deb 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.92.167 80] my distribution is ubuntu 10.4.
im trying to fix a broken package. i run sudo dpkg --configure -a Setting up firefox (3.6.9~hg20100817r34537+nobinonly-0ubuntu1~umd2~karmic). i get this message in the terminal but nothing happens. also i cant open synaptic.
The problem seems to appear with the following packages:openoffice.org-commonopenoffice.org-coreant it said before that the broken package is python-uno.I uninstalled openoffice completely and now when I try to install it again from synaptic, it goes:
Code: E: /var/cache/apt/archives/openoffice.org-core_1%3a3.2.0-7ubuntu4.1_i386.deb: short read in buffer_copy (backend dpkg-deb during `./usr/lib/openoffice/basis3.2/program/libfrmli.so')
I think I've installed mplayer from svn and now I'm getting that annoying "broken package" pop-up. Is any way how to make Ubuntu to ignore this package? I've tried it to solve it by following:
Code: user@mymachine:~$ sudo apt-get install -f [sudo] password for jan: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree
I have installed a package that doesn't work on my system because some dependency is not met and I cannot resolve that without seriously breaking my system. Now I want to uninstall that package but it doesn't work. Synapic package manager is also not able to do anything with this broken package. How can I get rid of it now?
I messed up at some point. Now, most apt operations result in errors.
At the moment, this is what I get when I try apt-get -f install:
Code:
Is there any way to fix this, or is my package managment permanently broken?
I just want to get to the point where apt isn't returning errors, because at some point I will want to upgrade to 10.04. This is just too risky with broken apt.
I tried to upgrade my pc from 9.10 to 10.04 version with the alternative cd as the update manager was not showing the new release. There were some problem in installation and the process stopped somewhere. Then, when I tried with the update manager I got some error.
The most recent upgrade for transmission has broken the package.I think it is a dependancy error between transmission-cli and transmission-gtk requiring a different version of transmission-common than what's available.I have Kubuntu 8.04. Here's my output:
$ apt-get install transmission Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree
so i just installed ubuntu 10.10 from CD. After restart the Update Manager windows poped up and downloaded 21 updates.. but i can't install the updates because "The package system is broken.." [URL]
it's a fresh istall i didn't installed nothing i didn't do nothing
I JUST got back on my laptop now that I have my new A/C adapter, and guess what? The package management system is broken! Which sucks, because I have quite a bit of updates to install.
Here's the details provided by Synaptic when installing the new version of AWN:
When I run sudp apt-get -u upgrade (or use upgrade manager). I get the following error. The package libhttpcore-java:i386 is not ok and I don't know how to fix it!On another note I am running x64 so the i386 is throwing me off.
I'm sorry if this topic has already come up, but My package manager is broken, and when I press repair, it says it can't repair because the package manager is broken. I'm pretty sure the code is
I just installed dockbarx and had an error. It says that the package is broken. When I start Ubuntu Software Center i get a message that i have to repair the package catalog. When i go to the terminal and execute the "apt-get -f install" i get this error:
On my new installation of 10.04 on a Toshiba A30, I'm trying to install EMC2, using an installer file downloaded from linuxcnc.org. At the end of the process, I get the error message below after trying to fix the broken package with package manager.
E:/var/cache/apt/archives/rtai-modules-2.6.32-122-rtai_3.8.1-linuxcnc1_i386.deb: trying to overwrite '/etc/udev/rules.d/99-rtai.rules', which is also in package rtai-modules-2.6.24-16-rtai 0
get past this problem ?
Is it as simple as removing the rtai-modules-2.6.24-16-rtai 0 package ? Do I need this one ? Is it replaced by the newer one, the rtai-modules-2.6.32-122-rtai_3.8.1 ?
I'm totally new to ubuntu and i have a major problem with updating ubuntu, I was looking around for some linux based gaming and came across the online game called "Regnum Online". I installed it and all goes fine until I restart my computer next day, the top panel that usually has daily updates is missing and in its place is a red circle with an x through it I hover over it with my mouse and it reads: "An error occurred please run package manager from the right-click menu or apt-get in a terminal to see what is wrong."
Which I then right-click and open package manager and it gives the following response: "E: Type '<!DOCTYPE' is not known on line 2 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/onemyndseye-regnum.list E: The list of sources could not be read. Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem. E: _cache->open() failed, please report."
At the bottom of this message reads: "this usually means that your installed packages have unmet dependencies." I don't want to lose my personal files by wiping and reinstalling ubuntu.
Preparing to replace mysql-server-5.1 5.1.41-3ubuntu12.1 (using .../mysql-server-5.1_5.1.41-3ubuntu12.3_amd64.deb).It hangs until i reboot the thing. This is not a normal error.I'm trying to fix it for at least 10 days.No Success. It happens when i try any package operation.
i am Ubuntu rookie i installed the following package onboard (Simple On-screen Keyboard with macros and easy layout creation) when i try to uninstall it using Synaptic Package manger i get the following error.dpkg: parse error, in file '/var/lib/dpkg/status' near line 26430:invalid package name (character `|' not allowed (only letters, digits and characters `-+._'))and when i try to configure it get the same error any help msi@msi-desktop:~$ sudo dpkg --configure -a dpkg: parse error, in file '/var/lib/dpkg/status' near line 26430: invalid package name (character `|' not allowed (only letters, digits and characters `-+._'))using Ubuntu 10.4
I've only been using Linux for a few days (Specifically - I installed Ubuntu 9.10 last week on my laptop for learning the OS and updated to 10.04 over the weekend). I have searched Google (and found answers) for every problem now except for this new one. I apologise in advance for the length but I wanted to include my own troubleshooting as well.
When I installed and setup Ubuntu Karmic - I added my work software. Autopackage wasn't installed by default so I used terminal's package install <filename> command for the first file - and double clicked on the rest to install. With the OS change I wanted to check to see if these packages would have problems installing on 10.04 (mostly to double check).First I checked my Manage 3rd Party Software to remove them - but all my entries here are blank. (I should have quite a few actually - I've done a lot of installing and downloading in the last few days).I double clicked to re-run them but that failed saying there was a problem with the packages. So I swapped to Terminal and found the following:
When I try to install a software package:
sudo package install "SMART Product Drivers 10.package" Reply: package: can't open config file /home/test/.mailagent If I type in just
[code].....
What's interesting, is checking my Fedora and Debian builds (I've done a lot of learning for only a few days! But I know a ton about grub 1 and 2 now) - I can't see a /home/test/.mailagent file or folder to copy either. The only thing I can think of is I have never setup an email account on my system (I've only been using it for a few days) and maybe the blank Manage 3rd Party Software tab is indicating a different problem.
