I'm totally new to ubuntu and i have a major problem with updating ubuntu, I was looking around for some linux based gaming and came across the online game called "Regnum Online". I installed it and all goes fine until I restart my computer next day, the top panel that usually has daily updates is missing and in its place is a red circle with an x through it I hover over it with my mouse and it reads:
"An error occurred please run package manager from the right-click menu or apt-get in a terminal to see what is wrong."
Which I then right-click and open package manager and it gives the following response:
"E: Type '<!DOCTYPE' is not known on line 2 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/onemyndseye-regnum.list
E: The list of sources could not be read.
Go to the repository dialog to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report."
At the bottom of this message reads:
"this usually means that your installed packages have unmet dependencies."
I don't want to lose my personal files by wiping and reinstalling ubuntu.
I'm getting the following error every time i run the package manager to install or update etc.. Code: E: nxserver: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 Despite the error, apt still works and allows me to install/remove apps. The application in question also works fine too.
Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit I have not been able to update using the update manager or by using the package manager. It seems when the update manager tries to download all the requests fail.Anyone else had this problem??
E: Type 'nchpad.net/ubuntu-wine/ppa/ubuntu' is not known on line 1 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ubuntu-wine-ppa-maverick.list E: The list of sources could not be read. The above is the console output when i type sudo apt-get update Update manager throws the same error so now I can't install or update software .
It started with Update Manager constantly recycling and not updating. When it starts it shows 295 files and 308MB waiting to download. When I click on 'Install Updates' it appears to go through the process, and then presents me with the same 'waiting to install' window again - and again, and again - in fact as many times as I care to click the 'Install Updates' button. No error messages appear. The 'Settings' button produces the same apparent process as the 'Install Updates' button, but doesn't present me with any other screen.
I've tried all the solutions I could find on these forums and nothing works. The sudo suggestions for Terminal usually produce error codes. adjusting a line in the 'hosts' file. When I tried this I was presented with the obstacle of not having access to the read-only file, and no matter how much I searched I couldn't find how to gain access . While investigating all these possible solutions, I was directed in turn to the Software Sources and Synaptic Package Manager applications, but when I attempted to start them, 'Starting Administrative Application' appeared briefly on the taskbar - and then disappeared!
Software center, update manager, Synaptic package manager crashes for no reason. I have not done any recent changes or downloads. I'm running a fresh install of ubuntu 11.04
Ok so I having the same issue as everyone else but it still exists despite the solutions other people are experiencing. Update manager, synaptic, and apt-get are not working no aptitude on here. Update manager says: An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message: 'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, Eroblem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_universe_ i18n_Translation-en%5fUS, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.' apt-get has errors with headers, finding files, and wrong file types. I have gone to a couple locations and the files exist and the hash is correct, and the file types are correct. I have tried replacing the sources file. I have tried sudo rm -r /var/lib/apt/lists sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get update with the same problem happening upon updating. In the same exact areas.

I've just installed ubuntu 10.04 and see that there are a two type installation software? why there are two things? What are the benefits of these two? What are the Difference Between Synaptic Package Manager and Update Manager?
having had problems with getting grub2 to work on dual HDD setup...despite the most excellent advice on the forum i took the plunge and installed 10.10 from update manager within 10.04..... bingo fixed grub and now have dual boot again. but the update manager and synaptic package don't work because of libedata-cal1.2-6 file that remains..following other advice on the forum Advice gratefully received, how can i force an unistall of this package

For the past four or so days there have been a few updates for my system (32bit Karmic). I tried ignoring it at first to see if it would go away, but this is the third time I've seen these error messages. Apt Authentication issue
Problem during package list update. The package list update failed with a authentication failure. This usually happens behind a network proxy server. Please try to click on the "Run this action now" button to correct the problem or update the list manually by running Update Manager and clicking on "Check". I click the "Run this action now" button and I get a second error,
W: A error occurred during the signature verification. The repository is not updated and the previous index files will be used.GPG error: [URL] karmic Release: The following signatures were invalid: NODATA 1 NODATA 2 W: Failed to fetch [URL] W: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
I got an update notification from update manager just now and tried to update (internet working perfectly) but before it finishes downloading it gives an error of "check internet connection" constantly
I have been getting these errors while running update manager and I can't seem to find specific information or how to resolve these problems. Was hoping someone could please provide me with some details about why they are occurring so I can deal with them myself next time and how I can go about fixing them now.

I am completely new at Ubuntu and would like to solve a problem I have when I try the update manager. I get this message:"Could not initialize the package information. An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.
Do I have to update the package manager that comes with OpenSuse before I get all packages? For whatever reason using the live cd I can't find any of apps I am looking for but on packman.org I can find all of them.
When I open Update Manager and click "check," it starts downloading package information and then the following pops up: Could not download all repository indexes.
The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

I opened Software Sources to try and remove the repositories, but couldn't find them. Plus I'm not sure if I need to manually replace these repositories with newer ones- I'm still relatively new at using Ubuntu (made the full switch from windows in October 2009). Plus, whenever I do install updates with the update manager, the "last updated" time doesn't reset itself. It finishes installing the selected packages, and the message at the top of the Update Manager window reads "Your system is up-to-date. The package information was last updated 28 days ago. Using Ubuntu 9.10 x86_64
Along with the standard messages, apt-get displayed
Code:
gpg: symbol lookup error: /usr/local/lib/libreadline.so.6: undefined symbol: PC This occurs on using the update manager, package manager, apt-get update, etc. Any ideas? I've tried deleting the cached files, changing my server, checking that my date & time are correct (signing can be time sensitive), updating gpg (it was already at the latest), and maybe some other things I've forgotten.
i am unable to open update manager when i open it , it gives back a msg stating that cannot initialize the package information. and here is the error msg.
'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, Eroblem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_maverick-security_restricted_binary-i386_Packages, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'
And when i tried with #sudo apt-get update
Reading package lists... Error! E: Encountered a section with no Package: header E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_maverick-security_restricted_binary-i386_Packages E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
and even i tried with deleting that file(security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_maverick-security_restricted_binary-i386_Packages) but was unsuccessful.
Ubuntu 10.04, update manager: the package "libmyth-perl" shows up, but is greyed. I have purged all myth-tv (assuming this package belongs there) from my system, but I am unable to remove this package from the update manager.
I have the package "xvidcap" (Screen recorder) installed in Ubuntu, the problem I have is the version I have installed is an older version and there is a newer version avaliable, but I don't want to install the newer version as this breaks some functionality regarding screen capturing e.g. audio capturing. But each time I run Update Manager the package appears in the list to be upgraded.
Is there anyway to flag the package as do not upgrade or something to make it not appear in Update Manager or at least have it greyed out so the checkbox isn't automatically checked each time update manager is ran?
When I try to open Synaptic Package Manager and update-manager it gives me the following error message: 'E:Type 'n' is not known on line 2 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/banshee-team-ppa-maverick.list, E:The list of sources could not be read.' How to solve this error because my system cannot update or install any new application.
Have received errors the last two times I've run Update Manager. This one says: Package Operation Failed

subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 The last error said something about "Max Reports". What I can't tell is whether the updates actually installed.
