View 8 Replies View RelatedI eventually got round to moving my AMDX4 machien from 11.1 to 11.2. I have done this to a coupl eof other similar machines so was not expecting any problems.
However I now have a problem. In runlevel 5 I have an xdm logon screen, but neither the keyboard or mouse work. I can ssh in from another machine and changing to runlevel 3 i have a keybopard and can log in. But sax2 does not respond to keyboard or mouse, so the machine is not really usable.
What package should I reinstall? Or what else can I do?
PS Not attempting to run gnome, kde or dfce; plain fvwm and X

I am currently using Ubuntu 10.10 and am wanting to switch to Fedora 14. I have always loved the way Fedora looked and felt. So I am finally making the transition. But I am wondering does Wine work well with Fedora 14? If so how do I install through the terminal. I know it is the harder way but I find it gives me more customization. I prefer it, so what would the command be? With Ubuntu it is sudo apt-get install wine1.2 what is it in Fedora?

Update manager says: An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message: 'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, Eroblem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_universe_ i18n_Translation-en%5fUS, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.' apt-get has errors with headers, finding files, and wrong file types. I have gone to a couple locations and the files exist and the hash is correct, and the file types are correct. I have tried replacing the sources file. I have tried sudo rm -r /var/lib/apt/lists sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get update with the same problem happening upon updating. In the same exact areas.

If I use the shell and apt-get I get the following message: The following packages have been kept back: firefox-gnome-support update-manager
The system is functioning well, but these 2 packages just linger as I process probably hundreds of lucid upgraded packages.
I have two disks, one with 11.2 installed, the other has 11.3 RC2.The upgrade process worked perfectly with 11.3 RC2.With 11.2 upgrade, after the first reboot, I get nothing but a text screen (TTY1). Failsafe mode gives me a black screen. What's the difference? Both disks in the same computer.

Just wanted to get some idea of stability/functionality.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 and 2.6.35-27-generic. When I run the Upgrade Manager, the 'Distribution Upgrade' window pops up and in bold letters reads 'Running partial upgrade'.
The next line reads '>Preparing to upgrade' and sits there. Mean while, the process begins to perform a great deal of constant hard drive activity. The window's horizontal activity bar reads 'Calculating the changes' at the bottom of the 'Distribution Upgrade' window.
Using Lubuntu 10.10. I uninstalled Apache Server (it was once installed). But the update manager is cites many new Apache updates that I need. But again Apache is not installed anymore. Synaptic says it's not installed. I have a checker for orphaned packages it says nothing about Apache. Why does the updater say this? Maybe there's a "residue" of Apache somewhere?
View 1 Replies View RelatedIve been using linux for a few months now and every now and again i come accross a program that doesnt have a rpm package but says that it can be installed on Fedora using source. I'm familiar with build essentials and the following commands:-
tar xzvf package.tar.gz
cd package
./configure
make
make install
but from what i have read fedora uses a differnet compiler. I'm trying to install Buddi budget manager and the ./configure command doesnt work, which im guessing is because it doesnt have a configure file? Can anyone confirm how to compile from source and whether there are any tutorials specific to fedora.

How can I check what window manager (compiz/metacity) I am using in the terminal? I know how to change from one to the other or to just visually see what is currently running, but I need to know a way to check in the terminal for a script. How can I do this?

AS I have NEVER updated it. So I ran the update manager and launched updates. Many packages completed, but linux-image-2.6.32-25-generic (2.6.32-25.44) gave me a lot of errors. I don't ave the terminal output from the update manager, but I have info from apt-get install -f. I am using root account.
