I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my new computer, and I've experienced some problems. I can't open Update Manager, when I try to open it, it says: Could not initialize the package information An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. AS I have NEVER updated it. So I ran the update manager and launched updates. Many packages completed, but linux-image-2.6.32-25-generic (2.6.32-25.44) gave me a lot of errors. I don't ave the terminal output from the update manager, but I have info from apt-get install -f. I am using root account.

I was trying to update the latest files of 10.04. During the update process suddenly my computer hanged. That was a hardware failure and my hard disk lost connection. When I solved it and boot into Ubuntu it just didn't open. A mark is shown on the above task bar that said "A problem occurred when checking for update."

update manager tells me the same thing but also that the software index is broken. And it offered a partial upgrade but it doesnt work or do anything just gets me the aformentioned error message.
I think this was all cause by me interrupting the last update process by pressing cancel, because it froze or something.
OK, So whenever I need to read or write a text file, I'd always use text editor, And therefore and no need for the big and bulky open office, But now that I've un-installed it, It keeps popping up in update manager.
Is their anyway to stop receiving updates for it?

When I rebooted, my desktop loaded as normal, but then when I try to open the terminal (from Applications -> Accessories or from my quick launch panel), nothing happens other than the quick launch panel disappears for a second then reappears. This is the case for most other apps, but not for Chrome (obviously).
EDIT: Used Alt+F2 to open the terminal, ran safe upgrade and then rebooted, but still having the same issue. As Ubuntu was booting, there was a "Broken pipe" message, which didn't stop the boot process but is still a bit worrying. I've run a file system check but this hasn't resolved the problem either.
I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 and at some point I realised that the Update manager application will not open when I click on it the hard drive spin a little but nothing happens.I realized that the Software sources et Hardware drivers apps are in the same states. I was not able to see after what operation/installation I did that I they stop working.I am a beginner with Linux, and I feel that if I reinstall I will fall into the same hole .

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but...well, I just installed Fedora after using Ubuntu for a while, and everything has been going good, except for installing upgrades. When I open the Update Manager, it says there is 399 updates. When I click install, after about ten seconds this pops up:Code:An internal system error has occuredA problem we were not expected has occured. View 1 Replies View RelatedWhenever I boot my fedora 12, even before asking me for my login name, etc., there comes a message saying "Can't update IECauthority file : /var/gdb/.IECauthority" and hangs at the place. Even the mouse doesn't move. If I were able to open the terminal somehow, perhaps by changing the file permissions, I could get something. Also, when I boot from ubuntu 9.10 and try seeing what's in the /var directory of fedora, it doesn't show anything, even if I display the hidden files. If the directory gdb doesn't exist, why is it showing the error ?

When I try to open "synaptic package manager," "root terminal," "software sources," or "firewall configuration" the window list on the panel on the bottom of the screen informs me "starting administrativ..." and then vanishes without fanfare. Clearly it would seem these programs are all dependent on something I managed to screw up.The question then is; what is it, and how can I fix it? Also note: everything works fine on the root account.

I'd like nautilus-open-terminal to launch Terminator rather than gnome-terminal.
A quick search of my system and the web didn't reveal anything. i didn't find a gconf setting to control this. A quick look at the source code didn't help much either.

View 2 Replies View RelatedIt started with Update Manager constantly recycling and not updating. When it starts it shows 295 files and 308MB waiting to download. When I click on 'Install Updates' it appears to go through the process, and then presents me with the same 'waiting to install' window again - and again, and again - in fact as many times as I care to click the 'Install Updates' button. No error messages appear. The 'Settings' button produces the same apparent process as the 'Install Updates' button, but doesn't present me with any other screen.
I've tried all the solutions I could find on these forums and nothing works. The sudo suggestions for Terminal usually produce error codes. adjusting a line in the 'hosts' file. When I tried this I was presented with the obstacle of not having access to the read-only file, and no matter how much I searched I couldn't find how to gain access . While investigating all these possible solutions, I was directed in turn to the Software Sources and Synaptic Package Manager applications, but when I attempted to start them, 'Starting Administrative Application' appeared briefly on the taskbar - and then disappeared!
Software center, update manager, Synaptic package manager crashes for no reason. I have not done any recent changes or downloads. I'm running a fresh install of ubuntu 11.04

After a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10-64bit I don't have Hardware Manager, Update Manager or Software Resources just to name a few.I tried sudo apt-get update & sudo apt-get upgrade & everything is up to date.

I have a problem that I can't seem to figure out. I can easily create a .sh file that will execute a command in Terminal, but as soon as it executes the terminal disappears. How do I get it to stay? My idea is to have the keyboard shortcut "ctrl+alt+del" open a .sh file with the contents "ps ax". Then it would be just like having a task manager; the terminal would open with "ps ax" already executed, and all I would have to do is kill the process number.
