Ubuntu :: Install A High Res Animated Sun In Celestia
Jul 29, 2010
I was looking to install a high res animated Sun in Celestia (1 of the kids is doing a school project on the Sun), but it requires 1.6 or better. I'm running Karmic which is stuck at version 1.5. I've done a search on the net (getdeb etc) but there doesn't seem to be a deb for V1.6 anywhere. Anyone know of a "howto" install??

I just now installed Celestia, and I was in the process of installing a few addons. In order to do this, files must be copied into the /usr/share/celestia. However, I cannot do this. I keep receiving a "permission denied" message, even after running sudo -i in the terminal. Is there any way I can get rid of this "permission denied" stuff?

I've been unable to successfully get a viable Celestia package created under -current with the 13.1 Slackbuild. First off, to build Celestia in the "default" Slackbuild manner, that is to say with the GTK front-end, you need gtkglext. (The Lua package built without issue.) The problem is, gtkglext will not build. It gets to the part of the build where it builds the "scanner" library (I have no idea what this library does in specific), where it successfully compiles, but then fails to link. The newest release of gtkglext is 1.2.0, which is from 2006, so I think that some of the symbols it is looking for when linking against -current's updated GTK libraries are depreciated. Here's the last bit of output from the failed build of gtkglext:
[Code]...
"error: 'abs' is already declared in this scope"?? There's a function or variable being declared twice that can't be right. Maybe two headers use the same variable or function name, and they're winding up in the same scope Like I said, I don't know. Hence, this post. I really like Celestia. I could live with the mystery of why these things won't build, but I can't seem to find any pre-built binary packages out there.
Of course, you can't try the KDE front end, since it will only work with KDE 3.

Been trying to figure out how to turn an animated GIF to a FLV.
I figured out how to turn an AVI to a FLV, but can't even figure out how to turn an animated GIF into an AVI so that I could convert it to a FLV.
I been trying, and failing, using ffmpeg.

X error in xmatrix:
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 72 (X_PutImage)
Serial number of failed request: 319
Current serial number in output stream: 321
/usr/lib/xscreensaver/xmatrix died, exit status 255
I have Ubuntu 10.04. Where is problem in it ?

I'm copying an animated TV series from DVD to my computer. The DVDs are encoded at 29.970fps, which I find strange because animation usually uses 23.976fps. Anyway, what I have done is de-interlaced and re-encoded it to H.264. Now it is set to 59.970fps, which I think is higher than what I want. I'm seeking advice on whether I should leave it at that or change it to one of the lower frame rates. Another question: Do you think that I should be encoding to H.263 instead? This is just to have copies of the videos on my hard drive.
Note: I used Avidemux with the Yadif filter using the bob method to de-interlace the film. I think the bob method preserves the actual 60 fields and converts them into complete frames. I'm guessing that the temporal spatial check would halve the frames and give me the 29.970fps.

The installation went okay (to start with) on my newly formatted hard drive (after death of Windows XP), but I got an error about 3/4 of the way through. The system said something about starting the desktop to try to resolve or fault find the problem. So I now have a desktop with access to all the menu system. I am feeling my way around slowly getting used to the environment. I think there are bits missing from the install but with no frame of reference I cannot tell what exactly is wrong. One obvious problem is my Monitor screen resolution. In Monitor preferences it is set as 'unknown monitor'.
The detect monitor button does nothing and the resolution is set as 2048 x 1536 which is just too small to see properly on the screen. I am currently using zoom to increase within a window to use at all. I have tried opening a terminal and using the xrandr command which reports the following:
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 2048 x 1536, current 2048 x 1536, maximum 2048 x 1536.
default connected 2048x1536+0+0 0mm x 0mm

However, I would like to ask if anyone else is experiencing Higher than normal CPU usage with openSuSE 11.4 PR?? My system, which is probably similar to others, increases the air flow with the fan on the CPU when it is working hard. Mine gets rather noisy. (don't have it on the floor, but right next to me) This fan speed increase has been lots more prevalent in the newest version of openSuSE.
Have also used 'top' and it looks like xorg is one of the biggest hogs. However, when I use VMware it goes into hyper drive a lot.

After searching for about 3 hours i finally decided to ask on forums. Is it even possible to use an Flv video file downloaded (very short) off you-tube as an animated desktop wall paper. I was trying to get it to work with xwinwrap but when i go to set the screen saver i want to play as the wall paper i am not able to see the video file i want, it just shows the default screen savers. I was wondering if what i am attempting is possible. Also if it is, how might i go about this?

I have a problem with my screen resolution in Linux. This happens with both openSUSE 11.4 and Fedora 15. The moment my PC restarts after I have installed the operating system it will boot up with a screen resolution higher than my monitor supports. My screen supports a maximum resolution of 1600 x 1200 @ 75Hz and Linux sets the default resolution way too high at boot, now all I get is a message from my screen asking me very nicely to change the signal timings, but I can't because I can't see anything to change it to a lower value (I don't want it so high anyways because then everything is too **** small). My monitor is a SONY GDM-5410 and the Graphics card is an AMD Radeon HD 4870 1GB. It nly works when I boot the system to FailSafe mode, but then I can't cahnge it permanently.

Does anyone else have problems when loading an animated gif in firefox? After upgrading to natty, firefox eats 100% of cpu each time an animated gif is displayed on the tab title, or when the favicon is an animation. I have an fglrx driver, but opengl animation doesnt slowdown pc as much as favicons does on firefox.

Do you know how to convert an animated GIF (only two pics in loop) to FLV or AVI?
I didn't search for a Microsoft alternative that maybe could run with WINE, because I really prefer a native one; also a java version will be fine.

I'd like to create an animated infographic in the style of this one:[URL]...using Ubuntu Linux (10.10 Maverick). One approach I considered was to create an animation using LibreOffice Impress, capture the video using recordmydesktop, and merge the audio using oggz-tools. But that feels like something of a hack.

Is it just me or does a page full of animated GIFs act funny on Fedora 14?
Example: [url]
Half the emoticons like to flash and disappear and things, even right clicking one and doing "view image" links to a gif that keeps disappearing and flickering. But when saved and viewed in another program (aMSN for instance) the GIF is fine.

Using Squeeze. After updating some webkit related packages (Mar 11 2011) some animated GIFs are not working properly in Epiphany or in Midori. In Iceweasel they are ok.
Packages I'm referring to:

libwebkit-1.0-2
libwebkit-1.0-common

Would someone have some kind of solution or workaround? Or should I just wait for a fix, coming perhaps with the next point release?

I want to record narration for a video, then look at the timeline of the narration so I can generate animation that is more or less in sync with it. I don't need to be accurate enough to match lip movement. I can generate the video frames with POVray, and I can make a movie out of the frames with ffmpeg. I have a microphone which plugs into my sound card, but I don't know how to record my voice, nor how to determine the time used at different points in the narration, nor how to add the audio to the video to produce a narrated movie. My OS is Debian Linux running Gnome.

I use a commercial finite element code to produce animated GIF files of my calculation results. In case you are interested, the code is COMSOL Multiphysics 4.0a, running on Fedora 13 x86_64. Note that the FEA code only has the option of saving movies as animated GIF files in Linux.
These GIF files tend to be quite large, and although they are adequate for my own use on my local computer system, I wish to convert these files into other standard formats of more manageable size. These smaller files would then be easier to distribute to others or to include in presentations and reports.
I would like to ask for recommendations for either GUI-based video player/conversion applications or command line codes that could, for example, convert from animated GIF files to MPEG files. I would prefer an application that allows for multiple input/output format choices as well as conversion options for changing the playback speed, splicing out a portion of the original animation, etc.

Ihave some video clips that i would like to use in web pages and Internet forums as animated images. is there a good free program out there that can get the job done. i also noticed that several gif images on the Internet lag like they skipped several frames, i don't want that i want the animation to play smoothly even if it means the file size will be astronomical.
