I know probably not so many people here need a English dictionary on Fedora box. But it's worth to documented since the other guides are Ubuntu specific and not usable on Fedora. Due to the old Flash 9 embedded in the Linux version of ldoce5, various problems happen. I came across the following from F11 to F13:
1. Chunky sound (F11)
2. Hang down the pulseaudio server (F12)
3. Completely silent (F13)
I tried installing the legacy libflashsupport with pulseaudio patch however it was deprecated from F10. The simplest and probably ultimate solution is to install the alsa-oss wrapper to re-direct the sound stream to alsa emulated by pulseaudio.

View 1 Replies View RelatedLooking for Offline English-English Dictionary for ubuntu.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI need a English dictionary to search meaning of words. I have done google searches as well as searched this forum but was unsuccessful in finding one. I am trying to find and install an offline dictionary i.e. it should work even if there is no internet connection. It should not be online dictionary.
View 12 Replies View RelatedWhen I attempt to install the OS on my PC, the install software crashes immediately after I select US-English on the first screen. I'm copying the entire error report below. My system is configured as follows: Gigabyte P35-DS3R motherboard with 4G RAM. (FYI, I'm using the 32-bit LiveCD just because I may need a 32-bit OS for some purposes. I know this means I may not be able to use all of my RAM.) There are 3 500G hard drives connected to the computer. /dev/sda and /dev/sdb are RAID-1 mirrors via the on-motherboard ICH9R RAID chip. The logical partitions show up as /dev/dm-1, /dev/dm-2, /dev/dm-3, /dev/dm-4, and /dev/dm-5. When I type `fdisk -l`, I can see sda, sdb, and dm-* all separately. (I can provide the full output of `fdisk` if anybody wants to see it.)
/dev/sdc is a standalone drive without RAID.
I want to install Fedora on /dev/dm-2 with swap on /dev/dm-5. Currently, /dev/dm-1 and /dev/sdc2 each contain a separate installation of WinXP. I suspect the problem is with detecting RAID, thus I have deleted most of the error report that doesn't seem to concern storage detection.

I am learning japanese and I would like to be able to switch between english and japanese input while keeping an english interface. How would I achieve that? I am using KDE, by the way.
In the Kiten documentation I read that pressing Shift+Space would enable japanese input (built-in in Kiten, according to the documentation). But that does not seem to work in my system.
i'm using Fecore Core 8, and i'm wondering how to get a package to change my keyboard from English to Hangul/Korean and back to English.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to make Japanese input work with Scim, but when I modify Locale to make it work, all the menu(pulldown menu, title etc.)also becomes Japanese too. Is there anyway to keep English menus/titles while Japanese(or any other language) input method with SCIM is enabled ?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am a rookie. Yesterday, I intended to install a dictionary with the command sudo apt-get install dict-xdict, but it turned out to fail with the error. Then, I quited with Ctrl+ c, and I did not care much till today because when I want install something else today, the error keeps coming out. Therefore, I think I would better remove dict-xdict first, so I use sudo apt-get remove dict-xdict, but the error still appears:

The instructions in Evolution say
Quote: 8.5.3. Spell Checking To choose a spell-checking language, select it here. You must install gnome-spell, aspell, and an aspell language package (like for example aspell-en for english language) for spell-checking to be available in Evolution. Additional dictionaries are available through your package manager and are detected automatically if you have installed them. To have the composer automatically check your spelling while you type, select Check Spelling While I Type. You can set the color for misspelled words.

For a month or two I have been trying to install a en_NZ dictionary for Libreoffice. It is available from the openoffice extensions page - which I am directed to by selecting Libreoffice > Tools > Language > More Dictionaries Online.
However for the past month or two this page has had problems. Every time I click on any of the extensions I am taken to an error page that states "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading."
Does nobody maintain the openoffice extension pages any more?
I recently installed language packs for Japanese and changed my system language to it, too. The problem is, now that I try to go back to English, the locale doesn't change back, only the menus are in english. "Apply system wide" in the Language Support didn't do anything; Firefox is in japanese too. Here is my locale output:
LANG=ja_JP.utf8
LANGUAGE=en_US:en
LC_CTYPE="ja_JP.utf8"

New to ubuntu but have use Suse 11.2 a bit. I downloaded a Spanish dictionary to Openoffice on suse with no problems. Under the tools in Openoffice word it says Languages "other dictionaries available". Click on it and it takes you to a site with all types of foriengs language dictionaries. I found the mexico spanish dictionary and it said get it. On suse it downloaded it and it auto installed it with a program in Yast I believe. Anyway the dictionary was in there when I opened office the next time.
Ubuntu is a different story, I can download it but do not know how to install the Spanish dictionary file to the OpenOffice. Is their a program included with ubuntu (gnome) desktop that will load this file and set it up in Office?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded a 9.10 system to 10.04.The family that uses this computer speaks both English and Spanish. The 9.10 system used both fine; however the new 10.04 is broken. Mixing the Spanish and the English after I tried removing the Spanish (because everyone's account went to Spanish even if they had chosen English).I want to go 100% English, once it is working again, install the Spanish support again.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded from 9.04 to 10.04 and so far I have those problems:
1. Before, everything in my system was in English. Now, half is in English, half in another language (PCManFM, some menus etc). I tried setting up Language Support but it changes nothing.
2. Cursor themes work only when hovering the mouse over "X" buttons in the right top corner of the window. As soon as I move the mouse somewhere else, it goes back to default cursor theme, even though I tried selecting 5 different themes - same result.
4. Hibernation don't work anymore. s2disk saves image to disk and then it resumes it but computer stops on text message along the lines of "Resume completed successfully".
5. Changing volume with keyboard shotcuts no longer works.
6. Smplayer does not display picture anymore when playing movies. The view is just empty. I can only hear the soundtrack. It is using XV filter.
7. PCmanFM that used to worked flawlessly, now after going into 1 or 2 subdirectories stops reacting to clicks on file/folder list. Need to open new instance to be able to do anything and this again would become unusable after visiting 1-2 folders.
i m trying to modify an Ubuntu install CD for a (nearly) hands-off installation experience. I have almost everything working the way that I want except for one thing: Choosing the keyboard.
1) I can boot the CD
2) I am asked, via what looks like a grey GUI menu, which language I want.
Problem #1: I don't know how to bypass this and force the menu to accept "English". 3) I have added my own label to isolinux/txt.cfg for my installation, and it shows up on the install CD menu: "Install NIMBioS Enterprise"; and it's highlighted by default. 4) I press RETURN to begin the installation. Problem #2: For some reason, the installer displays the "Ubuntu installer main menu", with "Configure the keyboard" highlighted. During a regular, unmodified installation the installer automatically goes into the "Configure the Keyboard" without me having to select it from this menu. I'm not sure why this is the case. 5) I press RETURN to select "Configure the keyboard" Problem #3: I am then asked, "Country of origin for the keyboard". No matter what I try as a preseed argument in txt.cfg, I can't make this go away. 6) Press RETURN to accept "USA", and everything else goes on automatic. Here is the contents of my isolinux/txt.cfg file:
