Aug 14, 2010Very recently, I installed 10.04 on a laptop with the 'Try it' option. After installation, I installed Skype - I'm not sure if it was from the Software Center or via apt-get. Today, I installed 10.04 as a full installation on my desktop. The laptop shows Skype in the software center, and apt-cache search skype shows "skype - VOIP and instant messaging client", but the desktop doesn't show it anywhere.

Nov 18, 2010I'm having trouble with Yast, I noticed today that I can't open the control centre from the desktop (along with install/remove software) when opening from the command line I get. the following output:

Yast2 control centre opens, but none of the options load when selected. I have tried updating everything through Zypper which didn't work. (aka zypper ref/up etc). Then I tried removing yast and installing it again. When I did this (and downloaded the Yast control centre again the above errors, reappeared.

Dec 15, 2010I have downloaded & installed the skype beta release for linux (now ancient?) on my newly build fedora 14 (64) box.
Under fedora 12, I made this work after several hours of mucking around by installing old libraries for 32 bit code in /lib and /usr/lib - as I got an error, I found the library and put it in place. This was painful and the WRONG way to do things - I should have been using yum!
It remains a shame that the Skype release for Linux is so old, but that is life.
Can anyone list the libraries needed (prefer yum names if possible) to make this work?
I can do this again the hard way and list the results for others (should have saved for myself, but I never dreamed that a newer Skype release would take so long) , but I am sure many folks have this working already. I am surprised there is no "yum install skype---" command.

Apr 23, 2011I am not really new to ubuntu since I had it for time now I still don't know a lot about it since I was not really interested in exploring it and probably won't understand some of the terms used so go easy on me. Now, since I have upgraded to ubuntu 10.10 (maverick) (maybe even earlier since I haven't been using it much) I have not been able to open Software Center.

I have 2 Ubuntu CDs, the alternate x64 and the desktop x86. I've inserted both and still gave me the same error. The computer is running the alternate x64 version. I've already reinstalled this computer 4 times, and it NEVER asked me for the CD. Why would it ask for it now? Not only that it asks for a CD I don't have.

This can be caused by a problem in the programm or a defiency in Wine You may want to check...for tips.
Well I cant find anything with the same or similar problem and I also can not uninstall skype using the wine uninstaller. It just doenst do it.

Apr 4, 2011I have tried installing skype through synaptic package manager, downloading from website through software centre and also manually using apt-get and dpkg. All I get is the same error - hash sum mismatch so file could not be retrieved. have tried the apt-get update and makes same error. not entirely certain what the --fix missing does or how to run it.

Jul 17, 2010Is it possible to configure Ubuntu to allow a user to only install from the software center and not gain any other admin privileges? I have enabled dpkg, apt-get and synaptic through visudo and I can install from there but the software center still prompts for my admin user's password. Just to be clear: it is not prompting me for the user's sudo password but for the password of the account that was created during installation.
I basically want to let users install anything they like through the package managers but not do any other root stuff (like sudo rm -rf /).

Ubuntu :: Software Center Won't Install Somethings?
May 5, 2011I can get update manager and some application from the software center to work, but several of them show a "no Internet connection" pop-up followed by "check your Internet connection". If it's any help some of the application that will not install, I tried first to install from playdeb. In addition, playdeb seemed to have issues when I tried to setup installation for it. I can't even get application to install from their website either.

Mar 1, 2010I've just bought a new laptop (Acer 3810T - which has a "Core 2 Solo Processor) - so I have installed Linux for the first time in my life.... Ubuntu 9.10-desktop-amd64.iso - so far so good, I'm very very impressed and the operating system seems to be working fine. I assume that I have chosen correctly the AMD64 version then.
Fastforward to Skype installation, and I download the version (skype-ubuntu-intrepid_2.1.0.81-1_amd64.deb) - which is the best match as far as I can tell from Skype's website. However when I come to install it, I get the follwoing error: Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: lib32stdc++6 (>= 4.1.1-21)
